View Full Version : Your Favorite Bad Game?

So in the 360 bargain bin thread, someone's decided to pick up Spiderman 3 - a known bad game. However, if you're a huge fan of a series or developer, you might look past any issues in a game that was universally labeled as "bad."

So, my question is, pick just one game from either this generation or last generation, that was rated quite lowly, and tell me why you liked it when nobody else did. Include the Metacritic score, if you're so inclined.

Mine is: Shrek Super Party for the Xbox (also on GameCube), ranking at 33% on Metacritic.

Reason: I have no idea how anyone could play this game and trash it so terribly. I had Mario Party 7 on the Cube as well, and it just didn't compare - Shrek was so much better all around. There was no gimmicky microphone, so maybe that's why. Heh. Anyhow, it was great fun for four players, and my wife also loved it (and hated Mario Party). The mini-games and board was just good, I found. I dunno, you should try it if you want a party game. I haven't seen a Shrek movie.

I was a huge fan of Joe and Mac for the SNES. Kinda shocked when I found out later that most people hated it. Same with Bubsy. And Uniracers...

I can't think of any next gen games that qualify.

Well, I have two games in my library from last gen (PS2) that were rated low, but I like them... to an extent.

Dirge of Cerberus (57%): Alright, I'll admit I liked it. But I bought it was after it was trashed (and on sale) so my expectations were pretty low. Though, I'm pretty sure I only liked it from a blind fanboy perspective. Not saying it was the greatest game ever, don't get me wrong. I didn't touch it again after I beat it. But, it entertained me more than I thought it would based on reviews.

Grandia Xtreme (68%): I really did enjoy the battle system to this game. It was different and fun. However, the voice acting... oh dear god the voice acting... I wanted to tear my ears out. That pain would have probably been less painful then listening to that horrible voice acting.

Are you sure you're not thinking of Baten Kaitos? Haha, that game was T.E.R.R.I.B.L.E. in the voices department too. Xhela (or whatever her name was) would often say the main character's name, and nothing more.
"Kalas!"
"Kalas..."
"KALAS!!!"
"Kalas?"
"Kalas."
That's most of what I remember from that game. Heh.

(oh yeah, Shrek Super Party was also on PS2, but I had it on Xbox, then got it on GameCube too, because my Xbox was not legit - the guy who I got it from had it on there...)

Ultimate Spider-man... It wasn't that bad it was just short and repetitive. I think it had great voice acting and a good story, also the art style is still something I haven't seen emulated in an open world game. Also I bought into the outfit because a friend of mine convinced me, I wish I hadn't but I got a good 5 hours of fun out of it and put it on a shelf to get achievements in it later.

I thought Uniracers was pretty well liked. The only game that got played more than that one in my dorm was Mortal Kombat II.

My recent poorly received game that I actually enjoyed was the Jackass game on my PSP. I can definitely see why it got no love, but I honestly had a lot of fun playing it while it lasted.

I'm a big fan of the BloodRayne series. Yes, the stories were cheesy (in a hilarious way), but the speed and fluidity of the combat (not to mention all the gore) made it a lot of fun and I've had very few gaming experiences that were as satisfying as drinking from someone (power up) while using them as a shield.:D

Superman Returns was fun to me. Once I beat the game I just go around GTA style. Good times.

Stolen (50)- I think it's for Xbox as well as PS2, and PC as well. It was a bargain bin game when it first came out, so if you find it, it's like less than the cost of a movie ticket. What it is, is a EXTREMELY different stealth game from what we're used to seeing and I don't think this game got nearly the credit it deserves for it's innovation.

You basically play a big-time thief. Someone who steals stuff right out from a museum, or an arthouse, or some rich schmuck's secret vault. You have to deal with guards, pick locks, hack security cameras and computers, and avoid lasers, sensors and the like. You can also pickpocket every single guard in the game for extra loot (though it gets increasingly tough to do so). Your character is completely against killing though, so you're not allowed to just kill guards and drag their bodies away. You have to think sneaky and think of a way to get past them using your gadgets or whatnot. You can incapacitate them if absolutely necessary but they do wake up eventually, so you have to be quick.

I liked it because it was actually a stealth game, not a shoot people and hide the bodies game. Plus there were definitely moments where you're doing some really cool stuff and you're like whoa, I'm a kickass thief! I really think people should have checked this out, and it didn't deserve the scores it got. I can understand from a lot of standpoints, it wasn't as good as other games, but it was made by a no-name group, so they should have cut some slack there.

Everblue 2 (59) - It's a PS2 deep-sea diving simulation game. It's mostly about finding things out in the ocean, exploring them and looking for cool and rare things to salvage and bring back to land to sell. It's really a very relaxing game, and has a faint bit of RPGness to it, with so many neat sidequests to do, but no "enemies" so to speak. There are sharks and things but they can be avoided for most of the game. It's just a really fun game to play around with, something to unwind with and settle down. I give it massive props for being one of the few games I can't really compare to anything else. Definitely worth a look at.

WRT Everblue 2, that's by Arika, right? They did a spiritual sequel, Endless Ocean, for the Wii. I have it, and I love it... It's more of a game than people say, just like you mention. The sharks in E.O. don't hurt you or anything. It, too, is very relaxing. Sounds like the same basic game, just newer and uses the Wii Remote. Plus you can do co-op diving with a buddy, online.

77% average rating, and this is your favorite "bad" game?? You have extremely high standards!

I freaking loved Joe & Mac when I was a kid. I have played it again somewhat recently, and it is very difficult, and the controls are a little too clunky, but it's still fun in co-op mode. I always wanted the 2-D Mario games to have simultaneous 2-player co-op like Joe & Mac.

That being said (sorry, I had to), I pretty much agree with the game critics on everything.

First one that comes to mind is The Simpsons: Road Rage. Yes, it's a Crazy Taxi rip-off with terrible glitches, but that's all just part of the hilarity. Maybe it's just because it was one of the first games I had on GameCube, but I had tons of fun with it.

True to form I own that game and I have never played it. though in my defense it was given to me because someone I knew bought it thinking it was for the first Xbox and were going to throw it out.

I know it got hammered by reviewers but I really enjoy NINETY-NINE NIGHTS. Maybe because I have great affection for the old DYNASTY WARRIORS thumb-mashers.

Two words - Two Worlds.

I must have spent like 50 hours on that game just exploring and completing almost every sidequest. It was oddly addicting. The voices were terrible, along with the script. Framerate was bad (but not THAT bad...) Combat was pretty simple. Story was just barely existant.

I only paid $10 for it from the Gamefly used game sale, and had just lost my job so that could have something to do with my sudden addiciton. Overall though I had a very fun time with it.

Its one of those games, though, that it seems to be "cool" to bash it at any chance you get, and it just irritates me every time I see something putting it down. Oh well.

Probably my favorite Spider-Man game, and depending on the new game coming out may remain that way. I don't think it was really given low scores or anything. I think there are some old school games I enjoy, but have seen some low scores for them.
