View Full Version : Twitter
I don't know why you guys fell into that trap. I'll reference Penny Arcade on this. I cannot understand the desire to tell everyone what the F you're up to all the time. I realize that on the small scale side its away to tell all your friends where you are so they can come hang out. It strikes me that I'd prefer to use mulit-cast SMS and be alittle more private instead of twittering and Mier of Texas seeing Alex is scratching his ass while figuring out how to put his Hello Kitty collection in order.

My friends don't need me to be on Twitter. They just know: during the day - work, at night - on the PSN.
I'm going to get one of the 3g iphones when they're released. (love getting my tax money back) I hope that rumor of an Apple IM client works out so I can have my IM up in the backgroud on the iphone. I'd like that more than twitter.

It is kinda odd. Just another social network site for me to be on and respond to people that don't respond back. Odd really.

Everybody seems to be getting on Twitter after Dvorak announced he finally got on it on Monday's TWiT, after saying it was kinda stupid for numerous weeks. I would probably never get on it, I don't think people need to know I'm eating a chicken sandwich for lunch or whatever else people twitter about.

Twitter is kinda fun... I've added a number of folks to follow but I have my "Device Updates" turned off to all except a handful of friends who I want to keep track of. I like it... It's the first real social network I've joined outside of LinkedIn and Zune (although I NEVER interact with LinkedIn except to Accept new Invites... and Zune is a very loose music-specific social network at this point...). That cartoon is great tho... lots of folks just blabbering away on Twitter - those people get blocked quickly.

I counter argue with:
http://imgs.xkcd.com/comics/rock_band.png
...Okay, so it has nothing to do with Twitter, but the arguments the same. It's not that I want people to know what I'm doing every second or that I want to know when someone's sitting on the can. It's just oddly fun and addictive. And you can reply to other people who are twittering so it's in a way like a mini forum.

I'm only using Twitter because I can link it to my Facebook and Messenger status messages. Basically I've unified my status messages because of Twitter and that saves me effort. However, I have noticed I now update my status way more often. Whether my friends appreciate that or not, I don't know, but I'm certainly enjoying it at the moment.

Sure, Twitter is pretty much an inside look into someone's life, but it's also a helluva lot easier then trying to call or text 50+ people at a time!
I find it useful, maybe because I'm on the road and traveling a lot, but it's easier to track a whole bunch of friends at all of these events going on through Twitter I find.

I cannot understand the desire to tell everyone what the F you're up to all the time.
When you sign up for Twitter, you're not obligated to tell everyone what the F you're up to all the time. You can be as selective as you want. The penny arcade comic I feel is a commentary that SOME people take it too far -- as with anything, you can take it too far.

Exactly what I got from it.
Edit: I'd like to add that this is the very reason I was hesitant to get a Twitter account; I'm worried I'll become this ridiculous guy who updates with "Going to the supermarket. Need milk.", etc.
So far I've at least updated with stuff that might engage someone in some way.

I looooove the innovation that Nintendo put into the Wii controller! The split design is both more comfortable, and more flexible! I love that some games can be played with one hand, freeing up my other hand for all sorts of other uses. Endless Ocean in my left hand; endless orgasm in my right.
I think that was too far.

If Twitter was nothing but people saying what they were doing, it would be boring. Fortunately, it isn't. It's observations, and witty comments. Last night a number of the people I follow were giving ongoing commentary back and forth to the primary. Etc.

Twitter doesn't seem to have penetrated up here in Canada yet. I have an account, but can't seem to find anybody else who does... or anyone who's even heard of it for that matter. so for now I'm pretty much only following the TRS crew and a few other micro-internet celebrities. Sad.

Yeah the PA thing is right for people who overdo it but sometimes it's cool like I just saw Xibby went to take some pics outside in his yard..I would have never guessed a guy so into heavy metal and darker themed stuff had a hobby and good at taking such nice pics of flower and stuff it's pretty cool and also read funny things like Leo Laporte son didn't believe how many followers he has (over 23,000) he put up his phone number and realized how bad of an idea that was quite quick..stuff like that is entertaining.(don't ask for the number it's been deleted since)

I'll openly admit that I was completely anti-Twitter for quite some time. But as soon as Kevin and the TRS boys jumped on, that was pretty much the signal (at least for me...) that it was okay.
...I'm not a huge fan, but its interesting. The thing now is to convice some of my other friends to join me...

Don't do it! It's just the flavor of the day, just like how it was cool to use MySpace, then no, it's not cool anymore, let's use Facebook, no wait, that's not cool anymore either, let's use this and that. It's ridiculous how fickle the internet crowd has become. I see lots of bandwagon-jumping going on, and I'm not gonna take it. Anymore!
That being said, I'm starting up a new website. I hope you will all join. Tell your friends. It's a social experiment, where I let you all check out pics of each other, and you can post messages to each other, and you can just have fun with it. It's unique, and cutting-edge, and it's going to be a real good time. Check my blog for more details!
I don't have a blog.

I think that depends on who you're talking to.
I've been using twitter since November and am following other people in Canada too.

Probably not, since Skunk, a swedish web community, were about 4 years earlier than Friendster, and LunarStorm 2 years. I'd bet that there were things like that already in '95-'96.

Though I don't have a solid use for it yet, I find twitter is a pretty cool system. you can go crazy with it yeah, but I've seen it used pretty effectively for getting people together, or in the case of digg and dltv, giving me updates regarding issues or eps, so I'm for it. Now to get some VA friends to start using it rather than follow rev3 show hosts all the time

Here's the descriptive video (http://www.commoncraft.com/Twitter) that Twitter has posted on the front page. The real value in Twitter is that it lets people feel connected on a more personal basis than blogs or emails. Its constant, real-time updates about how your friends are doing.
And with people who don't know each other very well in real life (like online communities, for example), this service lets us see the more subtle aspects of each other's personalities that don't come out in forum posts.
For example, if it weren't for Twitter I wouldn't know that k4ng is studying dinosaurs, or that Geeksunny is starting a new job. Or that r3v is anal about colloquialisms.
And "twitter shitter" makes me laugh.
