Xbox360 Disc Format

Now that Blu-ray has won. Is MS gonna stick with the modern day Beta Max (HDDVD) for upcoming games or do you think they will take a different approach for next gen games. Cause lets face it. Multiple discs isn't a viable solution.

I think they'll stick with DVD for the life of the 360

They may go to blu-ray or do what nintendo does and make their own format based on an already existing format but incompatible with said format to avoid liscencing fees specifically for the XBox 720 or whatever the hell the'll call it.

360 uses a standard DVD9 drive(same as Xbox 1 with 8.5GB capacity)
Nintendo uses Panasonic specially made discs Wii Optical discs that hold single layer uses 4.7GB while games like SSBB and Mario Kart use dual layer and hold the same amount of data as 360 discs 8.5 GBs.


360 decided before launch they would not include HD DVD built in as it would be too big a risk and the price of the 360 would have to be similar to that of PS3 at around 500-600$.

MS only had the HD DVD drive as an option to counter PS3 but MS was never against bluray but don't look for blu ray drives in 360 anytime soon..too much of a mess and handle at this stage in the console war.

Well it launched in 05... it's now 08... I'd give it another 2-3 years of "innovation" before MS rolls out the 720 and at the very most 1 year before MS rolls something out at E3 or GDC...
