so on digg and elsewhere there is a lot of talk on ISPs thinking of charging by the amount of bandwidth consumed

they say 80% is used by 10%

i think they mean us :D

anyway what do you think is going to happen with this

this is important to me as my startup is all about streaming media

so what do you know and what do you think

I think they are doing it to be greedy and fear they will lose business if city wide free wifi ever gets started.

It would hurt the viewers of streaming media(not being able/willing to watch/listen for fear of getting a huge bill) and the streamers since they wouldn't be getting as many viewers.

Overall I believe it will hurt the ISP due to people seeking out other ISPs that don't or won't do it.

Do you realise how much bandwidth they actually have off to the side and n ot being used? We are all currently pretty much using DOCSIS 2.x standard cable modems (and it is the cable companies that have the issues - not DSL or FIOS). DOCSIS 2.x is a little less than 25% of the maximum bandwidth or 4channel DOCSIS 3 (and a little over 10% of 8channel).

Next year when TV goes digital, the analog statiosn will be converted to digital data streams too, and that will open up a lot more bandwidth - upto 1GB data pipes.

So - they have plenty of space in reserve, but I think that we all know that they are just going to cry poor, put in caps, and charge people who use more than a certain amount per month. I don't care, work pays for my internet connection anyway.

There are clauses like those in our ISP contracts in Canukia and they used to be way way more enforced than they actually are. My ISP, Shaw (they're assholes but that's another line altogether), has a "soft-limit" of 60GB, if you hit that, they'll call you and let you know and ask you to slow down for the rest of the month. About 5 years ago though, when Cable Internet was new, my ISP was a smaller outfit that was later bought up by Shaw and they used to charge $10/GB after you crossed their 10GB down/1GB up limit. That was brutal.

I'm curious though, what do you all mean by caps? Don't you already pay for the alleged 5 Gbps connections that hit 5 Gbps for like 3 seconds between 2:00 and 2:01 am on a random Wednesday in October? Aren't there already multiple plans that guaruntee faster speeds for home users? Or are we talking straight up bandwidth caps, like 100GB and your cut off?

This totally sucks for people like myself, who don't have Cable and get all of their entertainment from the internet. I only have a 786k DSL connection, so I have to be patient for a lot of things, but even so, it all adds up. All the HD Rev3 shows that I'm downloading along with other stuff (like NBC.com's A Team and BSG), and I'm one of their prime targets, it seems.

It's just another BS tactic to make more money, IMO.

it seems to go against the whole move for everything available instantly on the net which is as inevitable as a force of nature

maybe they will try it and it will fail due to major streaming content providers like netflix and the music subscriptions taking issue

everything on ted.com is streaming media (ted.com is the best quality media) and youtube (which is probably the most visited streaming media site)

maybe google will slap them down for me :D

how can you know how much bandwidth you actually use ?

I'm on comcast and can't change because I live in a basement apt and have to go by what the landlord has.
We almost switched to Qwest DSL last month since it was cheaper (so they claimed) but after checking to see if the prices matched up to the speeds they promised....it was so far off that the deal never happened.

For us Canadians, Rogers and someone else (Telus, perhaps?) just put on caps. Fortunately for you and I, Shaw haven't implemented it. Yet.

Edit: New Rogers Caps
•Ultra Lite – 2 GB monthly cap, $5.00 per additional GB
•Lite – 1Mbps, 25GB monthly cap, $2.50 per additional GB
•Express – 7Mbps, 60 GB cap, $2.00 per additional GB
•Extreme - 10Mbps, 95 GB cap, $1.50 per additional GB
•Extreme Plus – 18Mbps, 95 GB cap, $1.25 per additional GB

You paid for their cables with taxpayer money so you deserve get screwed by them. I love seeing the nerds on Digg scream bloody murder because they would have to proportionately pay for using a service. They already have their Internet and don't want it to "change" so if these companies would charge these hardcore users so they could be able to pick up new customers then too bad because that will anger the nerds. How else are these companies going to invest in a new infrastructure and cut down on piracy? Packet resetting is an invasion of piracy so this is their only other way to effectively slow down pirates.

Imagine doing something that doesn't involve surfing the Internet!

Do you ever offer solutions to problems? Or do you just prefer to look down your nose and tell us how wrong we are?

Alex Jones. Infowars. Rightwing conspiracy theorist nutjob ... but extremely popular the "government is evil" camp that you seem to adhere to.

Do you ever come up with anything other than attacks?Frequently. How about you? Or is just declaring that everything is going to hell in a handbasket with no suggestions except pointing fingers at "the man".

It's hilarious reading your posts. Government caused the problem and government is supposed to fix it. LOLI wish I coud say I find your posts hilarious as well, but they are not particularly satisfying on any level - as intellectual commentary or humour.

Government caused the problem. True.

Government is supposed to fix the problem. Remember that "by the people for the people" crap in the constitution? The politicians in government were not elected to get them out of the way, they were elected to provide solutions as leaders. As their constituents, we are supposed to provide them the resources to make sure that happens ... and those resources are from tax dollars.

I have some step by step instructions for you on the concept of fucking off just in case you don't understand:

1. Go to the top of the page
2. Click Logout by your user name
3. Click the X at the top right corner of your browser
4. Go to the "Start" menu
5. Go to "Shut Down"
6. Shut Down your computer
7. Go to the bathroom and run yourself a tub full of a pleasantly warm temperature of water
8. While the tub is filling, go to the kitchen and unplug the toaster from the wall
9. Lift and carry the toaster to the bathroom
10. The tub should be about full by now so stop the water before you make a mess everywhere.
11. Plug the toaster into the razor electrical outlet
12. Turn on the toaster
13. Jump in the tub while carrying the toaster making sure to submerge both yourself and the toaster

Wow. You my friend = epic win!

I, as a Scandinavian, feel sorry for North Americans.(24mbit down/ 1mbit up FTW). While the RIAA and the MPAA sucks congresses dicks in order for them to ban net-neutrality and p2p, my ISP is actually going to court, to defend net-neutrality. They're fighting the movie/music industry in favor of their consumers.
(paying for incoming calls… WTF? That’s bullshit!)

TeliaSonera is known to cap ones internetz. But it's only if you exceed 100GB/month. (happened to me once. Boy was that fun trying to convince costumer service that I wasn't file sharing or running a server. You’re not allowed to have a fileserver without them first approving. Due to child pornography)

They would never, in a million years, charge you extra for more bandwidth. In fact, a couple of board directors say that you should download like an idiot, simply to push investors into putting more money in onto servers, IT-pros etc.

Unlike your asshole ISP, they should embrace the Scandinavian way of life.

(now to the health care part) Our healthcare is one of the best in the world (a couple of steps below France). Unfortunately for us, a couple of privately owned hospitals are popping up. “It’s going to make healthcare better for the ill”. How? By making competition? Health isn’t a business imo. People’s lives are at stake. $1200 for helping a kid that has trouble breathing. Is that MORALLY right? Fuck you, Sweden for allowing this! 42% of my money goes to you!

Around 5-6% of people here have no access to internet (that number is based on people that cannot get inet access), and it's according to a lot of people here OUTRAGEOUS.

I say, write letters to AT&T so lick your balls.

Why not DDOS their website? That's a way to tell them that you're super serial. It worked for anon
