View Full Version : Did Totally Rad ruin Diggnation for you?

So Diggnation was my gateway drug. A couple years ago, now that I had found some (perhaps less wholesome) avenues to get the shows I couldn't do without (The Daily Show, Battlestar, Lost) I decided to forgo television and I cancelled my cable (mostly because of the commercials.) At some point I was having a conversation with one of my friends and he told me about Digg.

Loved it. Watched it with beers and buds. Good times.

When Alex mentioned The Totally Awesome (was it?) Show, at the time I was skeptical. Watched the first couple episodes and could tell the guys were just getting their feet wet. Gave it a few more, came back. Got hooked. Dan, Alex, and Jeff all make totally unique wonderful contributions to the show which make it just so great. And the thing I think the show is MOST about (if I can be really warm and fuzzy here) is friendship. It's very clear that the three of them REALLY LIKE each other and a lot of times thats the best part of the show to watch. And there is never a moment that the three of them don't seem like good peoples.

Lately....I've been finding Diggnation....less.....enjoyable. I'm not sure what it is but it just...feels less funny. Doesn't have the sparkle that TRS does. Sometimes now I won't even watch a full episode anymore.

Whereas I find myself wishing TRS came out more than just once a week. Now I'm not trying to belittle the efforts and work that goes into Diggnation at all. They are horses of a different color completely.

Just sayin. I think TRS ruined Diggnation for me.

Has anyone else had a similar experience?

TRS and Diggnation can't 'do' 'things'. Only thing that changed in this situation, is the "I" and "me", in that sentence. They are 2 different things. Driving hasn't ruined walking for me. Ice Cream hasn't ruined steak for me. Britney Spears hasn't ruined sex for me.

They're completely different shows, both in content and tone.

Enjoy both for what they are.

Ruin is the wrong word here. But at first when TRS premiered, I wasn't impressed and I didn't think it would ever come close to replacing Diggnation as my favorite podcast.

And here we are now, with TRS being the show I look forward to watching each week, and Diggnation feeling a bit boring. I still love watching Kevin and Alex talk, but it doesn't have the same feel it used to. Sometimes it even seems like they treat Diggnation as a "job" and TRS has become the fun show.

But I don't know if TRS getting so much better is to blame for that or not...

Well, contrary to the first two replies you got, I'll back you up (sorta) on this one.

I started on Diggnation, since it was there first. But.. I am pretty lazy (I mean, a lot lazy. ... a LOT) and so I can only put out so much effort each week. After TRS came, I kinda stopped making that effort to bother downloading TWO shows, so one had to go. Diggnation was it.

Then I got my PSP, and it changed again, because the RSS feed support is great... So I could easily get both (EASILY). But then I got a PS3, and things changed again.. Back to TRS-only, because I don't really use my PSP for video lately.

And now, earlier this week, I wrote a script (I use Linux, and blah blah, see the thread about it) that downloads any podcast automatically for me. So, I'm back to TRS and Diggnation... And The Digg Reel and Internet Superstar and several others from other sites.

But my point is, I sorta understand, since when my laziness determined that one of them had to go, I kept the best show not on television, TRS.

I think that was more what I was trying to say.

Nothing flame war-ish by any means.

Diggnation was one of my first podcasts. Initially I listened to it on my morning drive, but eventually I discovered the video and began watching it every week. I was even paying the monthly charge to get the show early.

At this point I watch TRS within a few hours of it going live, and I watch Diggnation at some point during the week most of the time. I've definitely missed a few episodes of Diggnation over the last several months.

I don't think TRS ruined it for me. I think with most shows that don't specifically have plot points that keep you coming back (Lost) I end up losing interest after a couple of seasons.

I actually had the same sort of thing happen to me. Don't get me wrong, I still love Diggnation, but it's just not as consistent as it used to be? There are some episodes where it seems like they're just pushing to get through it so they can get back to their lives. TRS always feels genuine, probably because the guys really enjoy their subject matter. Diggnation is based on Digg stories, so I guess Alex and Kevin can't always discuss things they both necessarily know a lot about, or even enjoy talking about.

Still, I look forward to both podcasts, but TRS has really, really grown on me. I think after the episode where they talked about Transformers and Die Hard I really jumped on the bandwagon, and it just keeps getting more and more entertaining.

100% with you mate.

I still like Diggnation, but now it feels a little phoned in. I agree that it feels a bit like a job for them now. I think they should consider stopping at 150.

Oh I don't know. I mean, I like it. They just both seemed a little burned out on it.

Maybe start having guest hosts or something. Other revision 3 people.

I dunno. Thats for the Diggnation forum I guess.

Nope. I look forward to both shows' new episodes every week, along with other Rev3 shows. :)

Same here. I look at Diggnation and TRS as two sides of the same Alex coin. On Diggnation he can be the super-relaxed, jokey, tipsy, raggin'-on-stuff Alex; on TRS he can be the more-contemplative-but-still-jokey, sober-but-still-passionate, knowledgeable-but-still-fun Alex. He is the same guy in both shows but he's essentially talking to two different audiences, or should I say, two audiences with different expectations: Diggnation is like a Friday night happy hour with the fun "work friends"; TRS is the Saturday afternoon spent just hangin' out with the buds.

One thing I will say is that TRS keeps reminding me just how smart Alex is, which actually makes me appreciate Diggnation a little more.

I'm not sure why this turned into an Alex analysis, but I've rambled to much as it is. Summary: I love TRS, but I like Diggnation, too.

I'm right there with you on this one. Loved Diggnation until I heard about TRS. I still enjoy Diggnation, but TRS is a far better show. I'm finding lately that Alex is the best thing about Diggnation. He totally carries the live shows. Hilarious in London.

The sorta sad thing for me is that I got into Rev3 through Kevin's work on TechTV, thebroken, and Systm, and then Digg, Diggnation.. Alex of course was the n00b at TechTV/G4 and then he started appearing in Kevin's stuff (my memory is bad, so maybe it was just Diggnation :P). But now, when I watch Diggnation, Kevin seems like he's left out (to me), kinda like Alex is there with him to do that show, but then Alex really has a blast with Dan and Jeff... And Kevin seems... oblivious to it all (I'm sure he's not :P) but like, I feel kinda bad for him. They should have him as a special guest on an episode of TRS for some kind of special occasion... Maybe not, maybe it's just my long-time Kevin fanboyism kicking in here. Wishful thinking... Not that TRS needs Kevin or anything - of course not.. Kevin needs TRS? Hmm, no... Maybe Kevin needs to get another show... I miss thebroken.... :(

I agree! I cut my teeth on diggnation, but I hardly watch it anymore (sorry alex). I just don't really feel the urge to watch it. . .

TRS on the other hand. . . As soon as I finish one episode I'm ready for the next. I look forward to Tuesdays simply because that's when I can download a new episode. You should see me refreshing my browser around 2 o'clock on Tuesdays =)

I hope TRS is around for a LONG time!

I agree with all the sentiments.

I started watching Diggnation when it was just Diggnation and Systm. I watched "religiously" until Alex mentioned TRS. For a short time I didn't watch either. Then I started back up with TRS at around ep 3 (since watched the rest). And now because of TRS I'll watch Diggnation when I have a chance when before it was who cares.

I'm kinda surprised that one podcast can make you stop watching another podcast.

I have more than one tv show I watch and they don't interfere with each other, so I can watch both TRS and Diggnation without one ruining the other.

Diggnation is consistently funnier and more relaxed, but TRS is obviously more of an actual production. Depends on what you like. I always watch Diggnation as soon as I can, because I know it'll be funny. TRS, on the other hand, requires me to have seen the movie (which I haven't, most times) or to have played the game (same) to get involved with what's being talked about. The guys are excellent hosts, but even their great chemistry can't help a subject that I know nothing about.

Eh well, both shows are great. And seriously? Somebody's too lazy to download 2 podcasts? I don't feel so bad about my laziness anymore.

I back you up here bro, I had the exact same experience. I wouldnt go as far as to say that TRS "ruined" Diggnation, it is simply a superior podcast IMO.

TRS is more entertianing, has higher production value and has a broader variety of topics.

My first podcasts were TWiT and Diggnation...so neither of them will every be 'ruined', but TRS is just a-whole-nother level. (Of course, it doesn't help that Diggnation has cycles where it feels phoned in or stagnant...more like a job that needs to be done, whereas TRS feels like they're having fun and filming it, even using the show as an excuse to have even more fun.)

I do feel like Diggnation does need a break, but they do have a lot going for them. I'm trying to start up my own podcast, and with everything else in my life a bit hard to start up quickly. They have days where it seems a bit more stale, but for awhile I really just blame the increase in the digg stories. I enjoy Digg, but some of the stories they were doing just didn't seem like there was any need to discuss. I think the quality has been improving and live shows are always good.

I look forward to TRS every Tuesday, but for a different reason I enjoy Diggnation.

Diggnation has been running almost three times as long and I think we should wait until TRS gets 2 years before comparing them directly.

I personally prefer the late 70s & 80s episodes of diggnation to any TRS, but week-to-week TRS delivers more consistently.

Completely honestly, there are a handful of moments in each episode of TRS which are lol moments, but in the best diggnation episodes there's dozens of lol moments. When Alex & Kevin are on their A-game together, it's unbeatable for me.

That being said, I appreciate the conversation more on TRS because they talk about what is near and dear to me (movies & video games) and diggnation talks about all sorts of things, some of questionable interestingicity.

I love them both, and watch them both each week.

I'll admit I started "late" on both shows, I can't remember where on Diggnation, but around Episode 20 with TRS. They are in fact very different shows, but as the past year or so has gone by, I find myself waiting with a greater level of anticipation for TRS than I do with Diggnation... To me, Diggnation is a good way to unwind at the end of the "real" week, but given that my weekends fall usually around Tuesday/Wednesday because of my schedule, TRS ends up working out a lot better.

...And like others have said, TRS is far more consistent than Diggnation in overall quality...

I appreciate that just a bit more.

Agree with the majority of posters; I watch TRS every Tuesday *religiously*, but wait until whenever I have a free space to watch DN if I watch it at all. I think it's just merely coincidental though, as much as I like DN it's easy to see that it's becoming a little stale. That's no fault of the hosts though, they can't exactly control the content 100%. As it stands now, I have 3 eps of DN to catch up on whereas I'm always up to date with TRS.

I disagree with the poster who says you need to have seen the film/played the game to enjoy TRS though. It's rare I've seen/played what the guys are talking about until after the podcast.

Yeah I agree with some of the earlier statements they are two different shows. Just like when I turn the tv on and go to my tivo list, I open itunes and go to my podcasts.
