Nice list, being a mega horror fan I'd like to throw in my list.

1. Texas Chainsaw Massacre
2. The Fog
3. The Exorcist
4. The Hills Have Eyes
5. Dawn of the Dead

Definitely have to have The Texas Chainsaw Massacre on that list! One of the greatest horror flicks of all time, next to The Exorcist! Maybe because my grandmother let me watch them both when I was 6, but they both scared the hell out of me watching them the first time!

Don't forget Devil's Rain, Last House on the Left, and Don't Look Now (for the ending). If you wanna cheat on the decade a little, Rosemary's Baby and Motel Hell.
Btw, gineration, good picks with the first Texas Chainsaw Massacre. I'm not sure how that got left off their list.
I think they left it off on purpose to stir a debate. ;)

I remember one as a kid that I thought was creepy.

Ghost Story. from the early 80's.
About Some old guys who had a secret from when they were young men,but when they started dying mysteriously the secret is revealed.
BTW I know it's not 70's but I firgured what the hell 1981 is close so sue me:p

Not In any Particular Order, But:

Last House On The Left
Halloween
Lucio Fulci's Zombie (aka zombie 2)
The Exorcist
Dario Argento's "Suspiria"

Wow, horror films?
I have over 5,000 films in my collection (80-90% horror) so this is by no means my TOP 5. But these are good.
Great topic!

If I may ask, which is your absolute favorite?

And are you an Argento fan?

My ABSOLUTE Favorite?
Off my List?

hmmm....Suspiria.

I think Dario Argento is a genius with color and atmosphere.
I am not that huge of a fan of modern American horror films. I mean, I still collect and watch them, but I feel they lack the real "feeling" that older American, British and Italian films contained.
The old Universal films....HAMMER films, Amicus, and films by Argento, Deodato, and even Fulci all had this feeling from the opening scenes that let you know it was gonna be a ride.
Especially the old Hamer films. Brilliant.
But to answer your question, yes I love Argento and from my list it would be Suspiria.

For my FAVORITE horror film of all time, it's a tie:
George A Romero's "Night of the Living Dead"
and
Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau's "Nosferatu"

Nice, I'm a big Argento fan. I feel the same way about modern horror films as you. They just aren't living up to the older ones. I actually had a chance to meet Argento at a con. He was a really nice guy. He just had a great time taking everything in, running around taking pictures of everything.

Nosferatu is sooo creepy.

One thing about Argento I always wondered was how he can objectively film and direct his own daughter in nude scenes.
That would seem awkward to me.

But modern american horror films are uselss.
No scares, the gore is played out and done really badly...just crap.
No style.
No flair.

American directors really need to go back and check out the ones that worked (Hammer, Amicus, Argento, Fulci) and learn something.
