What was the first beer you had when you turned 21? I'm turning 21 on May 11th and was wondering if there's a specific beer I should try first...or just get whatever looks good, haha. :D

Chimay Bleue is pretty amazing, its one that Alex and Kevin like too. Fairly expensive though, and might be harder to find depending on where you live. I'm sure theres some great local beers around, just try them. Taste differs for everyone, so it's a pretty personal thing finding a beer that you like. Personally I prefer a sweeter, fruitier beer while other might enjoy a more bitter flavor.

Just don't drink anything really commercial (Miller, Coors, Natty Ice), especially not American. Bleh! ;)

I turned 21 on March 7 1989. Of course, I had been legal to drink since 1986. I'm old, I can't remember the first beer I had. Suffice it to say, that wasn't my first beer ever.

When I got home from class on the day of my 21st, my room mates had constructed a "Stroh Man." And entire dude dressed in scarecrow clothes made of beer. Case for the body, forties for the arms and legs. Actually his head was just a head.

Now Strohs sort of sucks, but I guess the lesson here is the company that provides the beer will be less important than the company in which you drink it.

Alright. Bass Ale.

When I turned 18 (legal drinking age in Sweden) I had already decided beer wasn't for me, though I probably downed a few disgusting "lapin kulta" and/or "slots guld" after that... Horrible stuff.

You're lucky you put beer in quotes.. I may have climbed through the screen to inflict pain if you hadn't! ;)

As for the question at hand, it really depends on where you're at.. I suggest something on the second tier of beers.. nothing fancy, but not swill either. Like a nice Sam Adams Boston Lager or a Killian's Irish Red. Something that's better than your cheap beer but not so different that it requires a little getting used to (pale ales and things that you need to have a taste for). Good luck and enjoy.

Does it count that I sipped some Bud when I was three? Stuff tasted nasty, so I didn't even want to try beer again until I was about 19, which was my parents' intent of letting me sip it.

My 21st b-day was spent in emergency abdominal surgery. So not fun.

Uh, go for something you've never heard of.

I was out water skiing with some friends and a couple had wave runners. Well the boat ran out of gas and One of the wave runners managed to suck the ski rope into the impeller when they came up to help. So we found a tow for the boat I spent a few hours in the middle of the lake with with the wave runner till we drifted into shore...

I went into the local dive bar and had one of the best beers in my life, a tall killian's red.

First beer was a Carlsberg. I stole that from my dad. I was 13 and I was heading of to a party about 4 miles from here. Boy was that a fun, drunk ride.

I also got a lot of booze from strangers. I basically went to strangers and asked them if I could taste their drink.

I'm shocked that I didn't get diseases. Herpes would've been a BITCH!

Just go for the cheapest.

I've always wanted to test out the vanilla bear Alex & Kevin drank a while ago.
Can't find that shit here. Neither do they sell it on eBay.

If I could remember my 21st birthday I would be able to tell you. But guessing from the photos that *unfortunately* taken that night I would say PBR.

Get something Belgian!

Stella's a halfway decent starter beer, Hoegaarden is a step up from that.

Leffe is where it's at though, delicious!

Just don't start with some shit like Heineken or Bud or something.

My first beer that I got drunk on was Labbatt Bleue, that was around 15. Now I'm 27, favourites are Guinness (and stouts in general) and Leffe (blonde or brown)

Well I didn't drink until I was 24 but my first was a Central Waters "Satin Solstice" imperial stout. Word to the wise: Don't drink an imperial stout as your first beer! It was overwhelming. Of course, now I've grown a taste for beers that strong but it took a while.

I agree that one of the Chimay bottles is a good bet. If you see other Belgian dubbles or tripels around, you may want to give those a shot too. Stay away from IPAs (probably too hoppy/bitter for you initially), barleywines (often too sticky, malty, and cloying for many), imperial stouts (just plain strong), quadrupels (also very strong and malty)...

Go for something that's not cheap water like Miller Lite or Pabst but not the $15/bottle super strong beers either.

Why does it have to be beer? A good glass of wine? A well made mixed drink? Where do you live? Are there any good local breweries in your area? Any wineries? Are you planning on walking into a bar/tavern and just ordering a beverage or are you going to have the drink with a meal? Maybe find a good restaurant and have a nice meal paired with some good adult beverages?

I am from a different generation, my parents let me have a beer at home starting when I was maybe 15 or 16. Back then, mid 70's, micro brews weren't known. It was Bud or Miller's and that was fine. I rarely drink beer, but I have been known to cook with it. OK, beer with steamed crabs or ribs.

I personally go for liquor rather than beer, but go for Boddingtons if you can. It doesn't seem to be all that common (I'm pretty sure its from England) but it is certainly delicious.

Back in the sticks (ie: Nebraska), you really didn't get a choice as to what you will drink on your 21st. Turning 21 wasn't so much a rite of passage, but more a chance for your friends to punish you. We called it the bar crawl, and I'm sure its the same for most drunks everywhere. Most of us (drunks) would agree though, your best friend buys the first round, (even in underage absentee, if thats the case). You don't get to pick, they do, and thats not a bad thing. You will learn hard and fast what you like, and what you can't stomach. Literally. Its was a crash course in drinking.

Back in Lincoln (circa early 90's), any bar would give you a free shot/drink on your birthday, so the goal was to get as many as possible, and Lincoln had alot of bars. Somebody would bring a birthday card (some bars provided them), and in that card you would write down the shot/drink name, the time, and then sign your name. That way, you had a record of your destruction. I don't suggest doing this, but it was one hell of a time.

Two shots of tequila did me in towards the end on my 21st, and I puked on somebody else's table at Iggy's. I then stole a gallon of ketchup from the corner Gyro place, and somehow ended up in some weird push-up competition. It was a weird night, but I'll remember it always. Well most of it anyway.

It was a simpler time back then. Before the beer snobs. Before the time that girls just drink wine. It was a good time, a fun time. Enjoy your 21st responsibly, but do have some fun.

First beer was some Japanese abortion out of a vending machine when I was a 15 year old exchange student. Probably Asahi or Kirin.

I'd like to say my first beer after turning 21 was a Guinness, but really, who in the States remembers their 21st birthday?

You are assuming everyone here is of the younger generation who became legal at 21. On my 21st birthday I went to buy a new handgun. (I had been legal to drink for 3 years already.)

Well, I turned 21 last Sunday and was with my buddies (most of whom already turned 21) and just took whatever looked good in his refrigerator...had a lot of bud light and some heineken and choose the heineken. Took a sip, and wow it is bitter! lol. Nothing like I'd imagine it would taste like..ended up just drinking half of it.

Any suggestions on a less bitter beer? Didn't even want to try the bud light...

P.S. Turns out I don't like tea, coffee, energy drinks, and now beer? Wonder if I should even try wine! :D

Wow. You basically don't like anything manly.

I doubt you will like Wine. Most of the wines I've tried have been bitter. Not much though.

I'd say, try drinking non-alcoholic beer (if it's available in your area).
That helped me get into beer.

First time I tried it, I thought it tasted like shit, but now I'm drinking beer at 7AM.

Booyah!

Yeah, well, I'm fine with drinking water 99% of the time and occasionally some soda. I willing to try beer again though. I usually give things a 2nd or 3rd chance until I accept that I just don't like it. For example, I tried drinking tea several times and it's just not for me. Same with coffee, and some energy drinks tastes good.

I'm curious as to why you didn't want to try the Bud Light. If nothing else, Anheuser Busch make beers that are very approachable and drinkable for someone who's just discovering beer. I would suggest trying something low-caliber.. I'm a fan of Miller Lite when it comes to just hanging out with friends and drinking, since it's cheap, tastes refreshing, and they go down fast.

Once you get into the taste of beer, then broaden your horizons. I'm not the person to ask about liking beer, since it's pretty much a requirement to be a part of my family. Some families breed musicians or artists... mine just so happens to breed drinkers. I've always enjoyed the taste, so I can only suggest the more common, tamer beers first.

Oh, and Heineken blows. It's expensive swill, basically. Try Sam Adams. It's a nice halfway point between mass-marketed beer and craft beers that require a more experienced palate.

Mine was Molson XXX.....nasty stuff. But at that time, the philosopy was 'the stronger the better'. Our drinking age in Canada is 19 (except in Alberta it's 18 - lucky bastards).
