I've decided to build my own computer, but I don't know what components to buy... My brother said www.newegg.com and look for barebone... any advice on what I should do?

dont get a barebones because there arent any good barebone boxes for core 2 duo. i would stay away from via or sis chipsets and also biostar and ecs make crap dont get their shit. and for PSUs go here http://www.overclockers.com.au/wiki/Power_Supply_Unit
a shitty PSU can catch fire or fry your computer

As far as the cpu goes, I'd agree with bird, the hot thing right now is the core 2 duo otherwise known as conroe so I'd choose how much power is in my price range and then try and find a matching mobo, in my experience I prefer abit and asus mobos.
The power supply is also extremely important, lot's of folks get caught up with the flashy stuff like the processor, ram, HDs, etc. and then try and skimp on some cheap PSU. That's nothin but trouble, since the psu is the backbone that runs the entire system and a cheap PSU can cause infinite more problems than a cheaper CPU or RAM. Look for the better brands like antec or coolermaster than can hold up over time.
Newegg.com is probably your best choice as you noted, pay close attention to the ratings of things on there also and see what other people said about the components, because if they had trouble with it more than likey you will also. Newegg lists you put together wishlists also, so make a pc on there and drop us the link and we can give you advice on what works together or not and so forth.
And as for the mods, do this guy a favor and don't go moving this to the hardware section? It's only going to die over there and if that's where it needed to be it would be created there in the first place.
And here comes briangilmore to say screw all that shit, buy a mac.........

actaully i almost always get cheap ram. i mean a cas 3 and cas 5 preformance isnt noticeable to me but the price is. also dont get some no name brand harddrive because if they fail youre screwed. i like baracudas personally. with the processor get either the bottom of the line c2d or the 6600. i say this because you wont notice the difference between the ones with 2mb cache. you might notice when you get 4mb cache. also gigabit makes nice mobos

My brother said www.newegg.com and look for barebone... any advice on what I should do?Need toask some questions first ... what do you want to do with the machine ... email/wordprocessing is going to give different response to programming, gaming, video editing, media server, etc.
Also, what sort of budget do you have?? Do you have an existing computer you can scrounge for parts (CD/DVD, monitor, keyboard, mouse, etc)?

I would also try hitting this forum up, cause although we are all geeks here, those are a specific, mystical, kind of geek of the race named "computer":

heres a "standard" rig that i would recommend (price before shipping)
PSU (sorry i have a boner for silverstone and fsp plus this one supports alot of extra drives and pcie) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817256008
processor http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?item=N82E16819115005
mobo http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?item=N82E16813131048
graphics card (i dont like builting graphics) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?item=N82E16814127211
ram (you need 2 sticks for dual channel) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?item=N82E16820237009
harddrive http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?item=N82E16822148144
dvd drive http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?item=N82E16827106014
this is a base i would set. i mean you could get 2 sticks of 256 and a smaller hdd and use integrated graphics but this is what i would get

Ok, Thanks guys; My bro also said www.tigerdirect.comIf its a deal that involves a rebate through Tiger Direct - RUN THE OTHER WAY. They have some greatprices, but their rebates are notorious for being "lost".
Personally, I'd stick with Newegg or frys.com (now they actually have their website there).
Also, for some heavy/bulky things, look at shipping costs. It might end up cheaper going to your local computer store (Best Buy, Circuit City, CompUSA), and picking up items like the case (bulky) or PSU (heavy) there.

all these are good points. The only additional thing I might add is that with the advent of Direct X 10 coming with Vista the new DX10 cards are now out. Seeing as you'll pay a hefty premium for these cards and there is literally nothing out there that will use these cards I would wait on buying one. I would then go one step further and say get a bargain basement crap Graphics card until at least Vista is out and somewhat stable. Buying a good card right now is pretty much a waste of money in my estimation unless you have money to burn. Buying a good card that isn't DX10 will be a waste because you'll spend a bunch of money on a card that will be fairly out of date in a year. Buying a bleeding edge card right now will be a waste because you'll over pay for a new technology that will literally be at the bottom rung of the architecture that will likely be around for the next 2 to 3 years.

All the gear you buy *should* be Vista READY, but those graphics cards are going to kill you. I'd almost go as far as saying just run with the onbard graphics until mid next year after all the new cards come out, then pick up a Vista capable card (or two and go SLI) then.

Your right, next time I wont do my job and I'll leave it in the wrong section.
This thread deals with hardware, it is now in the hardware forum. End of story.

$$$ constraints would help alot. As with anything else it greatly determines what you should buy.
on the cheap, i'd recommend a core 2 duo e6300 or e6400. along with a cheap p965chipset board or 975x board.
if your looking for a bit more high end. the nvidia 680i chipset boards should be hitting retail real soon.(perhaps they already have, they just got announced a few days ago) These boards overclock real nicely and natively support Nvidia SLI.
Video card wise, without knowing your budget I couldn't begin to speculate. Obviously if you want the best, go with any variety of the 8800gtx.

Maybe the person who started this thread wanted to ask the people he knows and interacts with most often? A lot of people from the Geekdrome forum only hang out there and not in the other areas of the Rev3 forum.
My question is why do you have such a chip on your shoulder about doing your job? You have such antagonism in your post. Even your name describes that people would be willing to punch you in the mouth because of that chip on your shoulder. You must be a tough guy. Don't hurt me.

It doesnt matter if he wanted to ask the people in Geekdrome the question or not. The topic delt with HARDWARE, not Geekdrome so it was moved to the HARDWARE forum. We have different forums for a reason and it is a moderators job to make sure topics are in the correct forum. Again I was only doing my job, something many of you fail to see whenever a moderator does something like this.
I have no chip on my shoulder about being a moderator. BTW, very clever interpretation of my user name.

Ok, Thanks guys; My bro also said www.tigerdirect.com
Absolutely avoid them, NewEgg is the way to go. I lost 1/4" of my already balding hairline dealing with Tiger...
And good point on the DX10 thing - Hang back a while (maybe onboard video?) until the dx10 cards start coming down.
Take a serious look into RAID0 (you'll find talk about it on the overclockersclub forums), make friends with names like "barracuda and raptor", and follow the power supply advice!!! (http://www.overclockers.com.au/wiki/Power_Supply_Unit)
MOBO - get an Nvidia chipset on your mobo. You'll feel warm and fuzzy inside.
And finally, STAY COOOOOL (http://forums.overclockersclub.com/Air_Cooling_FAQ-t30857.html)brotha.

For the record, I would have moved the thread too. I know that the logic really is WAY OUT THERE, but building a computer how to belongs in the HARDWARE SECTION. We cannot have everything all sloppy now can we children?
