First once since Ocarina of Time. 360 editor Hilary Goldstein says in the review that it's "The best game I've played in 10 years." Here's the video review. (http://xbox360.ign.com/dor/objects/827005/grand-theft-auto-4/videos/gta4_review_042508.html)

I already said this in the GTAIV thread, but I am pretty sure they gave Soulcalibur a 10/10 and that came out after Ocarina of Time. Maybe I'm wrong, but I thought that..

I'm sure this will be like HALO 3, where every reviewer will try to out-do each other with the superlatives when the game itself is merely more of the same, with slighty prettier graphics.

I won't be reading/watching any reviews (unless TRS does one) until I've finished the main storyline.

agreed. I'm sure gta4 has it's flaws, i can't wait until some of the other review sites are brave enough to point them out.

ign gives reviews based on hype. it was like learning santa doesn exist or something when i learned thats how most sites do it. Ask them 2 months after the game is out and the review is very different.
Personally, from all the vids i have seen, i can appreciate the game, but im skipping it. It just doesnt look as fun as the hype its getting. But then again, im not the same gamer i used to be, i look for a little more out of my games then violence now.

though i don't expect other review sites to give it a perfect score, they probably will be in the 9.0 or above range

I subscribe to the IGN Insider service, and the 10/10 has been described on the boards as being "Masterful" not "Perfect". No game is perfect. They will always have their flaws. However GTA IV is incredibly detailed, amazingly fun with a complete single and multiplayer experience, and just an all around FANTASTIC game.
I can't wait to get my hands on this Monday/Tuesday at midnight.

Why not make 10 the loudest?
But, But ours, they go to 11

i don't understand why this keeps happening.
people seem to want reviewers to have numbered rating systems. maybe because they like things quantified. whatever.
a number rating system has to have an upper limit, whether it's 5, 10, a billion, whatever.
a game comes out that the reviewer likes enough to give a top score, and everyone gets offended. wtf?
nobody ever said the game was perfect.

I think it comes down to the scales...and what people think they should mean. (Someone thinking the top rating should mean perfect isn't going to be happy if a reviewer rates on more or less on a curve...and vice versa.)
It'll always happen...even a generally accepted scale would have some detractors.
Edit: And people want a number rating, but they want one that fits with how they think things should be rated. Bah!

A top number on a review rating scale should never be reserved for something "perfect" because there never will be.

So GTAIV is the ONLY game in the past 9 years to deserve a perfect score? I don't think so. They even admitted it has flaws in their audio podcast review thing, and they still give it 10.0... Other games probably deserved 10.0 and yet got 9.8 or whatever.
I'm so glad TRS doesn't give numbers to their reviews. Once upon a time I wished they did, but more and more lately I've appreciated their honesty that can't have a number put to it. Why? Because a number only represents one person's view, and not everyone will agree on it, and therefore, numbers are pointless. With TRS, we get three perspectives, and often they differ, yet together provide an overall picture better than any numerical score ever could. I really appreciated IGN's podcast review, more than the written or video review. I wish they'd do that more often. Maybe not 55 minutes for every game, but MGS4 is the next game I'd say should have an audio review like that, especially if they're going to give it a high score. 10.0 (aka 100)? Probably not..

The problem with number grading, as I see it, is that it comes from a more technical standpoint. You can get nitpicky with numbers, especially having decimals thrown into the mix. By giving it a 10 (with decimals), you're saying that there's no room for error whatsoever.
That's why I'm all for the letter grade system that EGM implemented. I would see an A game being one that lives up to the hype, more or less. A+ would of course be more, and that could be applied to GTA4 without so many people up in arms about a perfect score.
But I doubt we'll ever see a mass change in the system. And as much as I enjoy the reviews like TRS does, I'll still turn to the number ratings to see if I want to purchase a game without the heavy "research." It's just easier that way.

I like a simple number system 1 to 5.
1 being terrible.
2 being mostly terrible, but at least it tried.
3 being something that neither excelled or failed.
4 being better than average.
5 being absolutely great. Not perfect, but great.
Decimals just complicate things.

I prefer 1 to 4, because then youre forced to make a choice on either side. With 1 to 5, you just get a whole bunch of 3s which were average games.
Anyway i ordered my special edition from Amazon, should be Thursday (hopefully)

I used to LOVE "Tips and Tricks" ratings. They seemed to be right on the money.
Graphics 1-5
Control 1-5
Gameplay 1-5
Fun Factor 1-5
Overall 1-5
The fact that they incorporated "Fun Factor" made it MUCH more accurate and usually caught my attention more and made me aware of games that were actually fun rather than "technically proficient".

I don't see how it's reasonable to attribute this score to hype. There have been lots of hyped games in the last 9 or 10 years, and this is the only one they've given a 10 during that span. I say this as a person who has never owned and barely played any of the GTA games. I didn't plan on getting this game, but the reviews have been eye-opening (I think 4 or 5 other sites have reviewed the game, and they've all given it perfect scores.) I also don't get how another site would have to be "brave" to not give this a perfect score. Do you think that there's rampant intimidation in the video game review industry? Take a step back and a deep breath, young people. It's just a frickin' video game.
Someone said that they didn't understand people being upset over a game being given a perfect score. I think a better question might be why any reasonable, balanced human being (much less adult) would get upset over any game score, period.

I really wasn't excited for this game till a little while ago. I got kind of bored with 3 and Vice Cities. I never tried San Andreas. From everything I've been hearing about 4 though sounds a lot more appealing to me then any of the other ones. With a full radio system with tons of content and music. The relationship aspect sounds like it may be a bit annoying at sometimes, but really emmersive in the RPG element. It just feels like this game is actually far beyond any of the past ones, and now I'll be picking up a copy as soon as I can.

dude, that's the whole point. it's their opinion, and you're free to disagree.
in the end, it's only your opinion when you play that matters.

Anyway i ordered my special edition from Amazon, should be Thursday (hopefully)
Mine's currently listing as Shipping Soon...maybe I'll get it Tuesday, for a change.
As far as reviews, I don't see why there's argument over scoring systems. Find places that rate games the way you think they should be, and go with that. (Or, do what I do and actually read any pros and cons and the like rather than just a number.)

My Amazon says shipped, but of course it won't go out until Monday. So I should get it by Tuesday with 1-day shipping. I really should've gotten the free two-day with Tests on Tuesday, but... I want my hands on it badly.
At the very least, I can lock the game in the lockbox until Finals are over.
