TRT - 00:58:29

The New York Comic Con is in iFanboy's home town, and it's packed with creators, talent and fun. It's a big show about a big show.

You want big names? How about Grant Morrison (Final Crisis, Batman), Geoff Johns (Action Comics, Green Lantern, Justice Society of America), and the legendary Neal Adams?

You want hot up and comers? Try Jason Aaron (Scalped, Wolverine, Ghost Rider), Marc Guggenheim (Amazing Spider-Man, Resurrection, Young X-Men), Andy Lanning (Nova, Annihilation Conquest), and Rebecca Donner (Burnout).

You want awesome artists? Cliff Chiang (Green Arrow & Black Canary), Mike Norton (Green Arrow & Black Canary, All New Atom), and Jamal Igle (Teen Titans, Tangent Superman) are right here.

These are the folks behind the great characters like Batman, Spider-Man, Superman, Green Lantern, Wolverine, Nova the Human Rocket, and others. If you couldn't make it to the show, this is the next best thing. Just bring your own funnel cake.

Watch the show and tell everyone what you think (http://www.ifanboy.com/podcasts/video/ifanboy_-_episode__67___new_york_comic_con_2008)

It was Saturday and we'd finally tracked down Grant Morrison and Geoff Johns. They see the camera and, at first, they share a look of "Oh, not another interview." Then they see the ID tags. Geoff looks at Conor. "Is this the episode with the new intern?" Grant taps his shoulder and points to me. "Listen," says Grant, "I'm going to take a quick jog back to the hotel. I should be wearing a suit for this."

Or at least that's what it says in my diary.

I love Neal Adams' artwork, but the man's disposition totally puts me off. Everytime I hear him speak it just rubs me the wrong way. Bit of smugness to the guy. Still phenomenal artist. Guess that's all that matters at the end of the day.

I have to say, I love his work too and I absolutely love his demanor, disposition and attitude - I could see how it could rub some the wrong way, but if you ask me, he's the man...

What a fantastic episode. I've watched a lot of video coverage of the NYCC and it doesn't come close to this. every interview had substance and you talked to some guys I had never seen interviewed. Sooo much better than the stuff at other sites that concentrated on movies. (Somehow if you guys were interviewing Mike Mignola I doubt you'd start off with "So tell us about the new movie.")

Pol, great job... what? No booth babe posing? I thought that was in the job description. Neal Adams and Ron - separated by birth and thirty years? And of course the whole thing done in beautiful HD.

It seems like being in your home town helped the energy. Is that a matter of sleeping in your own beds or learning the party lessons of Wondercon. Even Josh's voice held out, just a little scratchy for the breaking of the slab. (BTW, thank you for that.)

Outstanding work. Don't let the volume of compliments make you think they're any less sincere.

The thing about Adams is, he's a guy from a different time. He's got a lot of Don Draper in him, truth be told. I find it fascinating. He's so damn sure of his work, and historically, he backs it up. You don't want to have to hang out with him, but he's so damned interesting to me.

Also, he's done so much good work in comics.

He's like an older Ethan Van Sciver.

labor_days
04-26-2008, 10:20 PM
Yeah, but Van Sciver has a bit of humor to him. Adams, not so much*.

*I've heard Adams on other comics & non-comics podcasts. Definitely a dude with strong opinions. I just disagree with a lot of them. But yeah, the work is as good as it gets.

Josh's voice held out. Mine did not. Usually my voice isn't nearly as deep as it is in that interview. I was so hoarse by then.

I think I was saddled with every convention malady possible. It's like I was a human shield so the guys wouldn't get WonderPlague again.

Heh, I find Van Sciver to be completely agreeable. He's having a bit of a laugh @ your expense. Cheekiness is cool with me. I don't even mind arrogance or confidence if you can bring it (EvS & Adams both).

Eh. Maybe it's just me.

Great show. If I ever go to a Con I'm sure I would never talk to any of these creators so it's cool to see someone else do it. I was pleased to finally see a Cliff Chiang interview. His short lived GA/BC run has turned me into a big fan. I've went back and picked up pretty much everything he's done. Needless to say, I'm excited about his Vertigo project.

Oh and Adams turned me off a bit too.

I just got into comics and ifanboy a few months back. they do a great job with the interviews. I believe that just because the interviewed someone already doesn't mean they can't do it again. The creators always have new work that can be discussed.

But, to answer the question a little better I loved the preacher series and would like to see a Garth Ennis interview.

I like the mix of interviews with lesser knowns and the "big shots." It's cool to see people like Cliff Chiang get interviewed. Similarly, I'd love to see the guys find some new indie creator who is just putting out his/her first book, and talk to him/her about the process and what it feels like to be at a con WITH a book in hand, etc.

And, you know, I think the Neal Adams interview was really interesting. I'd love to see them interview other "legends" -- just to get that different perspective. I don't know if they ever even attend cons, but I'd love to see the guys talk to the older creators who got them into comics in the first place... Marv Wolfman, Chris Claremont, etc.

Sometimes they do, and sometimes they don't. It just depends on how much into the webspace people are. Neal Adams, not so much. Grant Morrison is in his own headspace.

Our recognition level never fails to surprise us. it just depends on the person, and how awesome they are. The more awesome they are, the more likely they'll know us.

Not to say I don't find Kirkman adorable. My favorite R-Kirk quote is something like "I don't know how old I was in the 80s, I'm not good at math." And the way he fanboys Liefeld, he's not afraid to go against the grain.

Even though I've been bashing him a little bit, I agree with your statement about Johns. He's a good craftsman, he knows comics, he knows what kind of comics he wants to make, and he definitely cares about the medium.

I really want to do an in-depth analysis of Bendis vs. Johns. I think they are both well-spoken, darlings of their respective publishers, and creators who care deeply about their art. Yet, their products are very different.

Well don't get to excited, I'm still lukewarm on the book. But for awhile when he first took over I would read each issue with a look that was half quizical, half grimace. I really questioned his direction. In the last issue things started to culminate and we're finally seeing his hand a little bit. So, good or bad, I'd say we can tell he had this planned and we can finally be assured that it wasn't just some random bumbling oddness. I just remember when I was reading it thinking back to an interview with him (I think by our boys here) where he talked about big things were going to happen. So I just thought, "Oh. Here's what he was talking about." Though my very next thought was after this bit is done and over are we getting a new writer? I thought I recalled him saying that he would be leaving after his big event, but my memory is swiss cheese.

This is definitely Kirkman's last issue, and I remember that interview -- I think it was from Wondercon. It's interesting that some creators' interviews give a good idea of what their work will be like, and some don't. Kirkman's probably one of the latter -- he obviously puts more craft into his stories than you'd think from hearing him (though I'm afraid UXM isn't the best example).

Didn't Bendis leave an angry voice mail at some point, or did I dream that?

He called and left one about Darrel slamming his book. He threw down the gauntlet on Darrel who never picked it up.

Does annnnyone have an episode number for that? I'm guessing it was pre-me listening regularly. Darrel is my favorite. Bendis might one-up him.

Too much awesome? Your brain couldn't handle its retention. A safety mechanism.
