Hey guys, I was just wondering who all here is planning on attending the 2008 Heroes Con in Charlotte NC?
The guest list (http://www.heroesonline.com/con-guests.html) is incredible, with: Darwyn Cooke, Michael Lark, Greg Rucka, Robert Kirkman and about 50 more creators that are irrefutably "tripple-A".
I'll be there for the entire Con, and I was thinking that we could have a meet-up for the ifanbase even though the guys won't be there.

I've been considering going this year, those are some good guests. Several others on the list that would be neat to meet too.

I know the iF guys really seemed to like this con, and it is the closest to me, so there's a good chance I might make it this year. I would like to know if any of you are going. Also, for those of you who have been before... is it worth it?

Here's the deal. It's a MARVEL con, or at least it was last year. Good luck finding a DC trade anywhere. But there was lots of good deals on Marvel stuff.
There were lots of creators around for chats, signings, and sketches.
The King BBQ (or BBQ King...) just a little way from downtown Charlotte was cheap and awesome, but only open for lunch, and not on sunday. GO!

Suits me fine since I scarcely read DC books anyway. :)

I read a fair bit of Marvel, too. Some Image, whether you think of them or indy or not. I read a few DC books, but I just don't care for the characterization and usually find it hard to relate to their god-like status and paragon personalities.

I'm going, as I have been for about 13 years now.
It's a great con, and Josh's observations about last year being a Marvel trade Con are correct, but honestly that's the only time I've been when this was the case.
There is always an awesome indy contingent, and this year is perhaps the best i've seen. I'm looking forward to meeting Alex Robinson, Guy Davis, Michael Lark, and Ryan Ottley.
Here's the site : http://www.heroesonline.com/heroescon.html
Everybody go if you can. It's the most chill, completely comic book driven con in the states.

I'm definitely in.
We should try and get together for a lunch... say, at the aforementioned BBQ place?
Roku and I are both new to the forums but we will both be at Heroes Con. I will actually be pitching a comic to a few publishers but I would love to meet up with any iFanboy + TRS fans.
Talking with Quad (Harison in game) and found that we are going to be at Heroes Con in Charlotte, NC on June 21. If anyone is in the area, or is going to the Con, and wants to have an impromptu meet up let one of us know.
Cheers,

I have been way from the interwebs for a about a week and a half and just came here to see if anyone else was going and saw this thread.
This will be my first comic convention and my first time to Charlotte. I will be coming with my fiancee (from Hampton Roads VA) and meeting up with a good friend (from Washington DC) at our hotel. I am so glad to be reading some positive things about this con especially how it is really relaxed. I would be game for meeting up for a lunch thing if that is happening.
What I really wanted to ask is, are there any MUST SEE things in the city of Charlotte since this is our first time there, be it museums, a stroll through a park, historical sites, etc? The future Mrs. VipersEatLotus isn't exactly the biggest comic fan though she will be attending the con so I am looking for places to go when we aren't at the con. Is the public transit system any good there? Is there a rail or subway or is it just a bunch of buses? Kinda would like to keep things on the cheap since the hotel, gas, and the con are taking up most of the budget.
Any suggestions would be great!

whats your idea of late afternoon?
according to the website the bbq place is open from 10am-11:30pm on Saturday.
the show on saturday is from 10am-6pm.
wanna say 3:45-4pm at the show and make introductions and then maybe say meet up at 4:30 at the BBQ place? late lunch early dinner type of thing? I will probably wear my iFanboy shirt as to be somewhat recognizable. maybe we could take a pic and send it to the boys and we can get our 15 seconds of internet fame! lol
if anyone would like to meet at the actual con though that would be cool. show a con newb the ropes?
sound like a plan?

I'm trying to figure out how much money to take to Heroes Con and I just wanted to get a read from you guys. Now I know that usually if a creator is at a company booth that the sketch is free.
But what if they're not?
What about the little guys trying to sell you stuff over at indie -land?
What about commissions?

Are you going multiple days? If so, ration your money. Figure out how much you are willing to spend for the weekend and then give yourself a daily allowance or you'll be tempted to spend all or most of it on the first day.
No-name artists (or even name artists) can go for 5 or 10 bucks. Many of them have a range of prices depending on what you want. For instance, you might be able to get a headshot for 25 bucks, full body for 50, color for 100. Sometimes it depends on the size of your sketchbook.
Don't try and haggle for a price, but what you can do is say, what can I get for this much? Just make it reasonable. And don't be super specific about what you want. Don't suggest the pose or whatever. Biggest thing, be understanding and patient and remember that drawing is hard and that they can only do so much.
Line up your commisions on the first day.

If you are going to get commissions you definitely have to schedule them on the first day, even in the first few hours of the first day. It seems like at every con we go to the artists book up their entire weekend in the first few hours of the show.

My birthday is the 21st and so I asked for the only trades that I really want right now for that so that I can just be looking out for stuff I wouldn't have thought of and not wasting my time seeking some particular trade.
I also want to dump a lot of cash into any indie book that doesn't have anything to do with mopey relationships. SO I'm going to spend some time just talking to the really underground guys with the more ghetto set ups.

This sentence broke my mind.
I'm just saying give them a look. You might find some stuff for real cheap that you never really thought of getting at full price. I wasn't looking for anything in particular either.

I love this. I imagine the 50%-off people as a band of traveling gypsies, criss-crossing the country in little horse-drawn caravans, seeking out comic book conventions. In the winter months, when conventions are scarce, the collective must subsist on meager rations, burning old Marvel Essentials: The Defenders volumes for warmth. But fear not -- they know where to get more. It is their way. They speak in their own secret retail language and eye passers-by warily.
Until of course, they set up their booths.
"Haaaaaaaalf off, everything in the booth! Everything in the booth is haaaaaaaaaalf off!"

It's a whole thing.
That's the start of a movie. Only, in the movie, the 18 wheeler tips and skids along the highway in a shower of sparks, trade paperbacks spinning wildly across the mountain roads. Slowly, cautious mountain folk emerge from the woods, descending slowly to the flaming wreckage Their eyes land on the four color volumes littered across the icy turnpike like jewels. A young boy smiles, hands trembling as he opens the book, turns to his mother and says, "momma, that man can fly!"
Maybe it's the end of a movie.
I dunno. I'm in a weird mood today.
I'm doing all graphic design and audio editing. So I need a writing outlet, can you tell?

Hi, Van Plexico here from AvengersAssemble.net. We have an Avengers-centered panel at HeroesCon that has just been moved to SATURDAY at 3 pm.
If you're coming to the con, the already-printed schedule will say it's Sunday, but that's no longer correct. (They haven't updated their Web site's schedule yet, either, but I have confirmed the panel will be on SATURDAY.)
The panel should be great-- We will talk all things Avengers-related, and then I will be presenting the HERO Initiative guys with a check for nearly $2000.00 from the profits from our Avengers book, ASSEMBLED! I will also have copies of the book for sale, along with info on the upcoming second volume (which will have chapters by Kurt Busiek and Tom Brevoort, among others). You can also order the ASSEMBLED! book from Amazon, BN.com, etc-- link below.
I will also be signing copies of my new superhero novel, SENTINELS: WHEN STRIKES THE WARLORD, being published by Swarm Press, with illustrations by Chris Kohler. It is the first in a series, with books 2 and 3 coming later this summer and book 4 in January. I am a lifelong fan of the Avengers, obviously, so you can imagine what this novel is like.

(1) This is a really amazing con. Just the perfect size, lots to see and almost enough time to see all of it, and plenty of time and space to talk to creators -- and everybody I talked to was great.
(2) Wow, the panel summaries that get posted on various sites that do those things? NOT really busting out with accuracy. That probably shouldn't have been as much of a revelation as it is. Seriously, I would have paid money for Newsarama to post that Matt Fraction said he and Ed Brubaker are getting married (which he did), and have people take it seriously and argue about it in the comments.
(3) After floating through stack week, claiming I don't really have that many unread books, I seem to have acquired a stack.
Hey Quad, if you see a guy, about 5 foot seven wearing a "Wildcat Football" tee-shirt come say hi, I'd love to interview you about your preview comic.
Crap, I missed the meet up and an interview. The con was great though, I loved that there was as much space dedicated to creators as there was vendors. I got to talk to guys like Matt Fraction about my comic! What other con can a no name like me get 10 minutes to talk with guys like that.
