Stargate (both SG1 and Atlantis) is one of my favourite ever TV franchises: epic space battles, cool good guys and bad guys and some genuinely funny writing.

It's always puzzled me that in my relatively long time being a fan of TRS I've never heard it mentioned on the show. Shows like Buffy and Firefly (which is awesome) seem to come up fairly regularly but Stargate, a show I think is in many ways superior to these, seems to have either slipped under the guys radar or is a show they didn't like.

Anyways, I was just wondering how many other fellow TRS viewers out there were Stargate fans, maybe get a nice discussion going about the Stargate universe and how much better (or indeed worse) it is than other sci-fi shows.

Stargate is pretty awesome, but lately the writers have just been getting lazy. Case and point is the Season 4 finale of Atlantis. 30 minutes of retconned crap and 10 minutes of stuff that actually matters. Snore.

Also, Ark of Truth was pretty shitty. The best scene was the one between Tomin and Teal'c. The rest was crap.

Ark was a little disappointing in that it was replicators, but over all i loved it and im glad i bought it.

I'm a Stargate Fan! My only problem is the replicators, I wish they weren't in Atlantis. I find every replicator episode very boring.

Love the movie, but I never got into the tv series enough to watch them regularly. I've seen numerous episodes, and they're amusing, but maybe it's just that I haven't watched from the beginning. (Don't really have the urge to go back and start though.)

Indeed.
I love both SG1 and Atlantis. I started watching SG1 when it hit syndication (didn't have Showtime), but lost track of it around the 3rd or 4th season. Got into Atlantis between the 1st and 2nd seasons after I picked up Rising on DVD pre-viewed at a local rental place. I proceeded to DL the entire !st season and got really into it. Then, last fall I decided to get caught up on SG1 (I was missing too many references on Atlantis) so I DLed everything from Children of The Gods up through a copy of Ark that got leaked about a month before the DVD came out.
I'm still waiting for Jonas to make an appearance on Atlantis just to complete the set.:p

Definitely love the show! The funny thing is, though, I probably won't be able to join in on the conversing. In fact, I will probably have to stay away from this thread.

See, my wife and I started the show (SG-1) for the 1st time, a little while ago. We started from the very beginning. We're currently stuck in season 3 because none of the video stores nearby have any of the show for rental. We've been renting online, but the disc we're on is stuck in "Very Long Wait" status, which my best guess says it was damaged or kept by someone.

I worked for one of the major video rental companies (maybe the biggest) for about 8 years, and that was always a huge problem with renting out seasons of shows by the disc. If one disc goes bad, the rest of the season is pretty much useless.

We're waiting to see if the problem gets fixed, and watching season 3 of Battlestar in the meantime. When we can afford it ($250!), we just want to buy the series box set.

You've more patience than I do...I'd download the next four episodes and skip to the next disc for renting.

Yeah, I was actually thinking about that, as I was typing it. I've never used iTunes, but I could probably just get those episodes. We were near the beginning of season 3 (maybe the 2nd disc), so whatever suspense that was left at the end of season 2 was sort of resolved (at least for the time being), so it wasn't a HUGE deal.

We had been waiting for season 3 of Battlestar for, how long was it between the DVD releases of season 2.5 and season 3? Over a year, right? So, we were extremely anxious for that!

That's a good plan, though. And one I considered. We really do like SG-1 enough to buy it. At one point, Amazon had it to buy for $125! I guess I didn't realize that it was a crazy sale on it. Now, it's around $235.

I started the show because I love MacGyver (yes, campyness and
all), and own all the seasons, and wanted to see what Anderson moved on to, once it was done. I immediately showed it to the wife.

Funny, she didn't like the pilot episode. I got the movie (when I found out, much to my surprise, that she'd never seen it!), and she loved it. She decided (of her own accord) that she wanted to give the show another try. Now, we both love it!

I like Stargate.(90's film was pretty good also)

Early SG1 stuff was meh to me but became enjoyable but didn't watch too much SG1 in it's original run because I am such a huge trek fan...now with no Trek I am enjoying Atlantis quite a bit..again it started out meh but now is pretty good and having Jewel(man I wish firefly was not canned) there is always instant win.

I've watched all of SG-1 and most of Atlantis. It's not really satisfying me these days, though. Starting with the 200th SG-1 episode, it just went to crap. It was The Ark of Truth that made me remember the overall arch and how exciting it could be, but that movie was just good for me. Atlantis has several times made me cringe at the writing. I pretty much didn't like putting up with the last season because that was after I finally decided to check out Battlestar Galactica. Now Atlantis and SG-1 seem kind of crude and childish, but still, I'm totally in for the next SG-1 movie, but unsure if I'll just call it quits with Atlantis sometime during the next season.

I haven't seen the series yet, but after BSG is over, I think I'll download it. SG1 that is.

Make sure to watch the movie first. The series is a spin off of the movie.

And also, if my memory serves, it takes a little while to get into the swing of things, so you have to stick with it for a while ^ ^

None of them were bad, but it did take a while before it really got good.

I LOVED the Kurt Russell movie when I was little so I've always wanted to get into SG1. I'm a bit put off at the moment because Battlestar Galactica is rocking my face off on a regular basis. I don't want to start on season 1, which in a lot of shows is relatively weak to later stuff, and end up hating it.

I would have to agree with that none were bad, but some aren't as good as others. especially early on compared to later on.
