Hi guys, just signed up for the forum. I've been watching diggnation for quite some time now. I'm curious if anyone knows how Alex and Kevin protect their laps from overheating laptops? I personally own a Dell XP3 M1330 and mine tends to get pretty hot after 30 minutes of use. I'm currently using a fan underneath but I noticed on the show, they appear to just have the laptops resting on their laps. Is there some kind of application or setting they are using to prevent/control the heat level?

Well, I use a mbp. They get hot, but the hardware was built to work properly. They have great fans, I've never really worried about mine messing up. The xps and falcon that alex uses are pieces of equipment too. Also, they leave space underneath...soooooo it should have some breathing room.

I have a first generation MacBook Pro, the ones that overheat like mad. At my old job I didn't have a desk, so I had to just sit in a chair and use it on my lap. My lap/junk is fine, i'm not firing blanks or anything (as far as I know). My shifts were a lot longer than a typical diggantion episode, so I'm sure Alex and kevin are fine

To be honest, I'm not quite concerned about Alex or Kevin's junk. I'm more interested in how they have the laptops just resting on their laps without it overheating. Sure you can keep some extra distance between the laptops but eventually, it'll just still turn into a fireball after a few hours. Granted each episode isn't extremely long but I'm sure with outtakes and such it takes at least 1 to 2 hours. Have they just built up a callus or somehow become immune?
Which all goes into my second theory that they've probably set a temperature control on those notebooks?

You want me to put a desktop on my lap? I'm pretty fit but I'm pretty sure my legs will break shortly after.
It looks like its almost unanimous that everyone's able to rest their notebooks on their lap. And to an extent I can do the same but after about an hour it really gets hot. Maybe I've got a defect from Dell? Worst case scenario it blows off my legs.

I've got a Dell Inspiron that's as pink as this text, and I can use it in my lap for hours without it overheating. My old Acer, on the other hand, could burn.

Notice Alex usually has one leg across the other? rest the computer on the top leg. It leaves more space underneith, so it cools down better. You can't do it for long though, because it's really difficult to use... Sometimes I hang the computer over my leg so the fan points downwards..
Oh, and as for the pink laptop, I ordered a midnight blue one the other day (dell had a free colour upgrade at least in the uk as a one weekend only deal - luckilly the exact time I needed to order a laptop...) My HP is going to be given to my sister, because when I go to uni (and even before then) , I'm gonna need a firewire port and the HP was advertised as having one but didn't turn out to have one. anyway, that's a whole other story (HP customer care took a week of "we'll phone you tomorrow" to tell me to speak to the retailer about it gah...)

Won't a constant heat source near a man's testicles make him not so fertile?
Possibly another form of safe sex? XD

Well, as we're dealing with this issue personally, just wearing briefs versus boxers can impair fertility to a minor extent.

Possibly another form of safe sex? XDYes. Gordon Ramsay ran a campaign in the UK to educate male chefs on the dangers of working in a heated environment like that.
He is pretty open about the fact that he has a low sperm count (http://www.contactmusic.com/news.nsf/article/ramsays%20job%20made%20him%20infertile_1045069) from working around hot ovens/cooktops. Occupational hazard for chefs and podcast hosts I guess.

He's got the money to resort to IVF if he needed to, so yeah, it's good to let others know because not all will be able to.

Nope, just rest it on your thighs. The middle of the laptop will get plenty of ventilation like that.
