Originally I had forgotten where I heard about Old Boy, I just remember it being recommended to me. Needless to say when someone I trust recommends something to me I'll give it a shot. And I loved it.

So, Old Boy is a Korean Movie and centers around revenge. It is about a man who is imprisoned without cause for a number of years. He is kept in solitary confinement with a bed, and a TV that doesn't really work at all. Finally, he is set free without explanation. He now spends the next 5 days trying to find who imprisoned him and why, taking revenge on all that were involved.

Love it, actually there's a Revenge Trilogy (Old Boy is the second one, they're not related to each other) by the same director Chan-wook Park.

I love movie with twist, and Old Boy's is a good one.

One of my favorite movies of all time, definitely my favorite foreign film. I loved this movie because the main character wasn't one of your typical 20- something action heroes, he was an average joe who got into a f'ed up situation and then took his revenge. The hallway sequence was badass too.

I didn't pay a lot of attention when I watched it so I've forgotten almost everything but I definitely liked what I remember, especially the hallway fight.

If you haven't seen it then I urge you to do so. Otherwise I will give you the treatment.

Yes, that is a threat.

I have it and it's an AWESOME movie! Although I felt pretty screwed up at the end......:eek: Gotta LOVE that corridor fight scene with the hammer. One of the greatest fight scenes EVER in my opinion.

Old Boy is a very f'ed movie, but also a great movie. The twist is one of the best twists in a movie I have seen.

Hmm...
Haven't seen it, but judging by your description, is it maybe a Korean take on "The Count of Monte Cristo"..?
I'm guessing it's quite an extreme version, by the sound the other posts! lol

I COULD go ahead and spoil the movie for you and tell ya the WHOLE story but it's REALLY worth seeing.

EDIT - Actually it's not at all related to that story because he is taken and held for absolutely nothing. He's not even framed for anything. Then they actually let him go on his own. It's a pretty twisted movie but great nonetheless.

This is my favorite of his trilogy followed by Lady Vengeance. Definitely worth seeing if you haven't gotten around to it yet.

I was actually looking at this yesterday and put in on my Netflix queue (they have a BR version!), so I'm hoping that after finals, I'll have time to watch this.

I love any kind of versions of The Count Of Monte Cristo, but Oldboy is a whole other kind of rad. If you haven't seen Oldboy just go now. Run! Stop reading threads about it! The proposed remake idea doesn't do anything for me because part of what makes Oldboy so great is the lead guy being as awesome as he is. It'd be like remaking Annie Hall.

I've not seen the other two in the trilogy. I got about halfway through Lady Vengeance and lost patience with it. Didn't think it was very good.

SYMPATHY FOR LADY VENGEANCE definitely has its problems. But for sheer bravura film-making there's few directors working today who can match Chan-Wook Park.

I can't wait to see what he does with the vampire movie with EVIL LIVE, aka THIRST. His vampire-esque segment in CUT was beautiful and creepy. Too bad the rest of the film was terrible.

Rumors of an American remake of OldBoy? Spielberg? Will Smith??

http://www.slashfilm.com/2008/11/06/steven-spielberg-and-will-smith-to-remake-oldboy/

Anyone like this idea?

I'd like to hear Dan's opinion if he's seen the original.

im really upset about the remake

the story is too fucked up for an american movie im afraid theyll ruin it

especially since spielberg has a problem doing bad things to his characters

Wow....really? remake?

this is a movie i can not see being made for americans, like...this pushes it IMO.

I love the movie but it just seems like it will get kicked in the balls when remade for american audiances or something.

but maybe I'm wrong...

Yeah, I thought the same thing too. Just don't think it'll go over well with an American audience. Especially imagining Will Smith in the main character role. And I don't like the idea of Spielberg directing this. Sure, he's a great director and all that, but it's not his type of movie.

I'd like to hear Dan's opinion if he's seen the original.

He Twittered about it last night/this morning. Didn't sound to thrilled.

However, I am curious as to if they'll try to keep it similar or stray in a different direction. I expect them to try the hallway fight...but I kind of expect them to focus a lot more on the character while he's in the room and how he copes (or doesn't) with it.

Personally, I don't like remakes much at all...(I'm odd, I think remakes should wait 50 years)
