View Full Version : Show Idea IR to Bluetooth

I have a suggestion for a show idea. Since many people use universal IR remotes for their entertainment setup, and now we are getting devices that run off bluetooth, such as the PS3 or Wii. It would be nice to be able to control these devices with our existing IR remotes.
I have seens places that sell a device, but it sure would be nice to be able to make our own.

While it's a nice idea, just the same as you can't control a PS2 with an IR VCR remote, unfortunately you can't just pump in the commands and hope.
There's a lot more to BT than there is to IR since IR is purely pulses of IR light and BlueTooth has a much more complicated set of protocols and such. What might be possible though is an interface that takes the commands from an IR remote (programmable?) and then sends the appropriate command (that is, the commands that the original remote/controller would send) via BlueTooth but it'd be more complicated than it might at first sound.

Maybe he's thinking of something like the Nyko Blu Wave (http://www.amazon.com/PlayStation-3-Blu-Wave-Remote/dp/B000R5H7KE/) remote. But that doesn't convert IR to BT. It converts IR to USB. I use it so I can control my PS3 with my Harmony universal remote.

A very easy and value for your effort is a winlirc or LIRC project. Basically you can use any remote to control your PC for a value of maybe 5USD (excluding the remote of choice). I use an mac remote to control my (windows) HTPC.

That device only controls PS3s. And will only work with a PS2 remote control.

Actually the ir2bt device is made to use a universal remote that can use the ps2 commands. Such as the Logitech Harmony remotes. Yes this device does only control the ps3.
