View Full Version : Cartoons from your childhood

I have to admit, one of the things that makes me a geek is my obsession over cartoons. I've watched a lot of cartoons, as I'm sure many here have, and I have a special place in my heart for all of them, but especially those special cartoons that I grew up with. :D
So I guess I'll start this list off with the shows I remember from my extended childhood. I know there's a lot here, but I know for a fact that there's WAY more, cause I didn't bother to list all the shows that didn't REALLY stick with me, but I remember, like Popples for example. This list isn't in any real order, other than semi-chronological. That's how my memory places them, but I didn't actually do any research on them or anything. So here goes:
The Mighty Hercules
Spider-Man
He-Man
Voltron
Thundercats
Bravestar
Silverhawks
Saber Riders and the Star Sheriff
Transformers
GI Joe
Fraggle Rock
Go-bots
Bionic 6
M.A.S.K.
Gummi Bears
Captain Planet
Teddy Ruxpin
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
Cops
The Real Ghostbusters
If you've got a craving to see the intro and hear the theme song of times gone by, stop by http://www.retrojunk.com/ and give their search bar a whirl. They've got most of the intros, although not all. They even have a crazy german version of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles intro! If they don't happen to have the right theme song for you, you can almost always find it on YouTube.
So what cartoons of the 80's and 90's defined you?

I don't know if these from my childhood (ahem, 70's too) defined me but I loved them..
Scooby-Doo
Superfriends
The Flintsones & The Jettsons (I know these are pre-70's but they played them like they were brand new when I was a kid.)
80's
Spiderman and His Amazing Friends (I actually wanted to be Firestar, really. So I guess that was pretty defining).
Snorks
Smurfs
Strawberry Shortcake
Punky Brewster (Glomer)
Mr. T
Inhumanoids
Gem
Some of these were like one season, but still.
90's
Inspector Gadget
Aeon Flux
Ren and Stimpy
And now, Spongebob Squarepants, My Life as a Teenage Robot, Invader Zim

Sunday night I turned on my Tv and I had the Boomerang network. I got really excited and had my tivo record a bunch of shit from the next day. I sit down to eat a poptart and watch Captain Planet and the recrding was blank. What happenend is the netword was free for the weekend, but I only caught it very late on Sunday. I was pissed I missed Snorks too.

Actually, I think those Mighty Hercules and Spider-Man shows are from the 60's :p so that's even further back.

I used to watch a lot of cartoons as a kid. Nothing really stands out, but I was a huge Marvin the Martian fan (rekindled at Uni by a prof with a voice like his - it cracked me up when he talked about the "Pee Dee Pee eight em-ULE-ator"). I also lked getting up early to watch Rocky and Bullwinkle.

Dude, I know I'm old, but I think that The Flinstones/Jetsons are the only pre-70's cartoons...I won't get into me watching The Brady Bunch, The Monkees and Lost in Space thinking they were original runs when I was a kid.

Wait, are Moomins like trolls? I remember having a set of Moomin books that I loved when I was in 3rd or 4th grade. I didn't know it was a cartoon too.

oh man, don't worry about repeating what's already been said. I want to know what were the shows that we all have in common? Obviously the Bravestar cartoon.

Well I just meant from the shows I listed. I know I watched these in the 80's, but they must have re-released them or something.

Man, I was so damn young at the time, I didn't care when they were made. All I knew is that Hercules had a power ring hidden behind his belt that gave him the stregth of the gods. That was important at the time. :p
And I totally miss Samurai Pizza Cats.

I was also wondering why anime doesn't seem to get to much mention around the drome. I'm not a huge fan but I do enjoy to indulge on occasion.

I also liked Invader Zim and Megas XLR a lot.

I'm really not sure. I haven't been on the forums very long, and I just thought it was something not talked about. When Divadog's sister was on the show, she mentioned a few series, but other than that, I've never heard or seen of anime on the drome. Maybe JLo and Dan need to have the occational 3rd member who can pop in to let us know about some cool series we should see, or should have already seen, like some gem from the past. Personally, I like anime too, probably stems from the cartoon geek in me.

In my day (when I had to walk uphill both ways to school, barefoot through the snow) we didn't have Saturday morning cartoons... we had a lot of Sid and Marty Kroftt live-action shows. Like "Land of the Lost" "Electrowoman and Dynagirl" and "Nature Boy" which was a total tarzan ripoff.
However, a few cartoons I learned about later and enjoyed were the Ghostbusters animated series, Dangermouse, and probably a few more I can't remember. CAUSE I'm OLD

I'm reminded of my favorite 80s cartoon, Robotech, which was a loose translation of the wildly popular anime, Macross.

In Hungary we watched a lot of Czech, Russian, Hungarian and Polish cartoons. If anybody remembers Worker and Paracite from a very old Simpsons episode, the cartoons were exactly like that.
I got a couple of DVDs from my last visit. Those cartoons didn't age well. In 1987 I did live in Austria, and I did get hooked on Transformers, Mask, and Knight Rider (Which I know wasn't a cartoon) watched them all in German :). In 1991 my parents went to Australia for a year, and I learnt english and I loved the The ninja turtles, the dinosaurs (They were puppets) and the Simpsons.
We also had this one hour program called Sunday Disney in Hungary, and Ducktales was big, and the Gummy Bears :)

Haha, I remember that. I remember watching a lot of that in my teens. Animaniacs, Tiny Toons, Darkwing Duck, and the original Batman cartoon were high on my list at that time. I also seem to remember an odd show called Count Duckula... does anyone else remember this?

I totally forgot about Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles! We had the video tapes that you could buy from Burger King. We also had a lot of old Max Fleischer cartoons on tape.

How could you forget about Ninja Turtles??? I'm shocked... and the thought of even that possibility just brought a tiny tear to my eye. I'm glad you have now been saved from your bleak and meaningless turtle-less future. :D
