Okay, I just installed Linux for my first time yesterday...
I installed the NVIDIA-glx drivers to the newest ones...
And I still have lag when dragging the windows. Is there something I did wrong?
If I can handle FEAR, and play Half-Life 2 at max settings at 1280... It's not my system...
What is going wrong, and how can I fix it?
(More detailed..)
Whenever I click a window and drag it, it moved 1 inch of the screen. When it does it, it lags for about 1 second, and refreshes the window position.
When I scroll, it does the same thing.

did you change the xorg.conf from "nv" to "nvidia" and if so there might be a setting about window delay. if not its just ubunutu/gnome being a piece of crap that it is

Nevermind, got it all up and running.
I just installed the drivers wrong... So they weren't actually on the system. I have it all fixed though, and loving it. :)
Windows is out the window now...

Compiz and beryl have merged back into the same project. They are not separate anymore. I have an nvidia card, so i can not say anything about the ati's. You may want to see if you have the restricted drivers loaded. If you do not, you may want to do so. I know that ati was dragging their feet about drivers for linux, but i have not kept up with the latest details. When you install ubuntu it usually does not install all the goodies, so you have to go back and install all the parts. Ubuntu is real bad about that. Maybe they are trying to get you to sign up for a service contract, who knows. You may need to go to the package manager and search separately for compiz and emerald. Then you can get the whole shebang.

My system has an ATI card. The proprietary driver from AMD is very simple to install. Just download, execute it, and reboot. It modifies your xorg.conf for you and loads the kernel module upon the reboot.

I am fixing to put hh on and old beige 200+ mhz old world g3 mac, I will probably try to use a different windows manager besides. gnome. I would really understand it being slow.

If you like the feel of Gnome, but lack the resources, XFCE is pretty good. Allows the window decorations to look just as nice without any of the bells and whistles (i.e. memory hogs).

Yes. xfce is light, but I was going to use something lighter than that like fvwm or the like. The ps bit the dust during the install, so it is a moot point now. I stripped for parts and chunked it. One less system to support. I prefer the new world macs anyway. They work like a normal pc, so you do not have to do all the stupid hacks to put linux on it..

Oh man. That sucks. I used to be a hardcore FVWM user when my machine was a 400MHz. It was fun to customize it, have it completely break, and try to fix it. I even like TWM, despite it's fickleness.

I might check TWM one of my old machines just too look at for a bit. The machine was so old and the parts were worth more to me in another machine than to waste the time trouble shooting that old relic. I knew it was dead. Been there done that. I can strip the wire from the ps and use that for somethine else. Junk is just raw rmaterial waiting to be used for another project.
