I just installed Service Pack 3 and my computer stopped booting normally. I'm only able to boot into Safe Mode. If I try to boot normally, it goes into the normal loading screen with the Windows flag and then just reboots.

If anyone else has the same problem... post here and let's see if we can get this figured out.

I don't know, maybe it's just me. Maybe I had a bad install. If I find a fix, I'll post it here as well.

Specs:
Windows XP MCE (SP3)
AMD Athlon 64
ATi Radeon X600 Series
1GB RAM

Possible Conflicting software:
AVG Anti-virus
MS ActiveSync
Vongo (Hate it, but my brother is using it).

I am currently installing it now... now I'm worried....

It's finishing up now but I hope it won't break, only problem I did have while it was installing was a problem where it couldn't copy the atapi.sys file, I hope this won't cause problems.

After a reboot, if it all works out I'll post back. If there is a problem hopefully I'll be able to find a way to fix it and post back that too.

Ok just rebooted, everything seems fine. Only thing I had to do was repatch my uxtheme.dll so that I can once again enjoy those themes that aren't "M$ certified" or whatever.

What version of XP are you using: Pro, Home, or MCE?

I thought I would add that I'm also unable to access Windows Update now. When I go the website it gives me an error message.

I have had great success with XP SP3. MS Office is runnign faster (as promised). My only problem was a file that was locked and kept stopping the install.

Rebooted into Safe Mode and installed from there. All OK.

Win XP Pro. HP nc6400 laptop (Intel CPU Core 2 Duo).

My only advice for anyone else (sorry crasher35 - I got nothing for you) is to:

1. Boot into safe mode.
2. Backup the registry.
3. Install.

We had a couple machines here at work get SP3, to test it out first. and they are having major issues, so we were told to not install it yet.

Interestingly Service Pack 3 won't load onto the Parallels installation of my main Crap Pro no matter what I do. Not that it's a big deal - I run Windows on *real* workstations - but it's just a little bizarre.

Actually, I'll give that a try. I was able to roll Windows back to SP2 (For once, System Restore actually works). So I'm going to take your suggestion and try to do an install in safe mode.

If that doesn't work then I'll just stick with SP2 for a bit longer.

The XP SP3 fix causes various OEM (such as HP) systems with AMD chips to fail boot due to intelppm.sys power management being activated by SP3. I had the problem 05/10/2008 and found this command to issue in safe mode, or rename the file. DO NOT DO THIS IF YOU ARE AN INTEL SYSTEM, OR YOU WILL NEVER BOOT AGAIN. I got up in safe mode and got to a command prompt and issued this exactly as I show below with spaces as I show:
sc config intelppm start= disabled
This got my HP AMD X2 system up with SP3, and I have booted multiple times, and powered off, and it is working. I have also heard that some ASUS boards need you to plug in a USB thumb drive (etc.?) to get up, also.
NOTE THAT SP3 INSTALLS IE7 and you can't go back to IE6 unless you remove SP3. In HIS name I give you this.

I installed sp3 on a fresh install of XP Home and it didn't even hiccup.

To be fair though, before I reformatted [planned on doing it anyway, not because of SP3] it wouldn't install, kept saying I wasn't running an NT based operating system.

So far haven't noticed much in the way of performance boosts [though admittedly I don't use MS Office] but I also didn't see any performance hits, so I'm OK with it thus far.

Other than compiling updates there are only under the hood changes.

Hmm. I can't get Windows Live installed. I'm not certain SP3 is the reason, but it is a possibility.

Installed SP3 on my laptop. No real hiccups, but XP does take longer to boot up and shutdown now.

I just put an oem version of xp with sp2 on a dell 1g 512m ram gx110. I downloaded the network admin version of sp3 and installed it. machine. worked after reboot. windows kde worked fine also. xp seems it bit peppier. If I did not have to run the virus and spyware software, It would have real decent performance,

That's probably the issue I'm having, my system is an HP running AMD chips. I'll go ahead and give this a try.

According to BOL, Msoft is claiming that they warned certain manufacturers that the SP might cause problems for non intel chips. something about a disk image. I didn't understand it. But they say it was an OEM fix and they mentioned it four months ago.
