I don't see much about it around here but I figured I would give it a shot.
I wanna know who watches it? What your watching? What you've watched? Reviews and recommendations too.
I'm new to the whole anime scene, only started watching this summer. I was very hesitant to get into it at first but so far I have been impressed by a few shows. My favorite series so far would have to be Samurai Champloo and I would say that it is a really good starting point for getting into anime. For anyone who doesn't know the series it blends an old school Japanese setting with hip hop culture which gives it a really cool perspective on life in ancient Japan.
ps. if I am breaking some sort of unspoken rule about the drome that anime should not be mentioned let me know

Im in to anime, altho there hasn't been anything worth watching this year.
But you should try Cowboy Bebop, Fullmetal Alchemist, Witch Hunter Robin, & Wolfs Reign.

I haven't been watching anything recently, but a favorite of mine was Full Metal Alchemist. Cool setting, lovable characters, and even an interesting plot. All with only 2 filler lulls! The plot arc from 11-22 (the end of the first season) was incredibly good, and the show was even good after it passed the manga during production. I highly recommend watching a couple episodes to see if you like it.
Oh, I watched the fan-subs, so I don't have first hand knowledge of the official english dubs, but I've read a review saying the voice acting is very good, so I'd try them out first. Good dubs are so hard to find :(

Since the list of what I've watched is short I guess I'll put the whole thing up
Full Metal Alchemist - I liked it. watched most of it in dub and it was good
Full Metal Panic/Fumoffu/2nd Raid - loved this series. Fumoffu is probably my favorite season.
Gantz - I was in to it till about the middle then they lost me a bit.
I think thats it's for ones I have completed but I was also watching Ergo Proxy but the subs slowed down so i never finished it.
Right now I am watching Samurai 7 and I am liking it.

Oh man, I could recommend a list so long you'd never finish. A friend of mine got me hooked on anime 10+ years ago. There's lots of good current stuff out now like some of the ones already mentioned, but my heart lies with the classics. The stuff I got started on. Stuff like Ranma 1/2, Bubblegum Crisis, Tenchi Muyo, Slayers and a little known title called Saber Marionette J. They were all before anime became drawn and coloured on the computer with cg effects added in. Of course there's tons since that change over that are really good too.
Some of my favorites include, but are not limited to (I just know i'm going to forget a ton):
titles listed in my paragraph above
Eureka Seven, Cowboy Bebop, Flame of Recca, Outlaw Star, Serial Experiments Lain, Barefoot Gen, BECK, Ergo Proxy, Rah Xephon, Godannar, Sokyu no Fafner, ZegaPain, Shakugan no Shana, Kenshin, Basilisk, Bastard!, Bleach, Elfen Lied, Battle Angel Alita, Love Hina, School Rumble, Mai Hime (first one only), Haibane Renmei, DragonBall Z, Gundam Wing, Gundam 0080, Macross Plus, Akira, Ninja Scroll, Onegai Teacher, Scrapped Princess, Kodomo No Omocha (Children's Toy), FLCL, Princess Mononoke, Shaman King, Nadesico, Cat Girl Nuku Nuku, Vampire Princess Miyu, Vandread, Hellsing, Tenjou Tenge, Peach Girl, Mushishi...
oh crap, there's so many I can't remember the name, and it's taking so long to write this post, and if I keep going my post will just end up never ending, so I'll give it a break for now. Damn I'm a geek, good thing I'm in the right place. :D

I'm a big fan of FLCL, but why on earth do they have a 3 DVD set for 6 episodes? I used to keep up with Naruto and One Piece, but now I have to catch up with Naruto since a friend of mine started watching and he got me all excited about it. My only hurdle is that I'm about 100+ episodes behind, so yeah, that's not very inviting.

anime is like regular tv in japan. and like our TV, there's a lotta bullshit you gotta sift through to get to anything good. i've been into anime for a few years, and i'm always looking for good stuff, but i still share the same outlook as the average anime newbie who refuses to get into any anime with too childish of a plot, or where the plot centers around a high school kid who has a magical friend that only he can see and somehow he has to save a parallel universe (believe me i've TRIED to get into some of this stuff because people insisted it was eventually good. no.) that shit's simplistic and played, give me the REAL dramatic anime. here's what i'm digging.
Berserk
Death Note
Great Teacher Onizuka
Outlaw Star
Requiem From The Darkness
FLCL
Cowboy Bebop (both series and movie)
Ninja Scroll (both series and movie)
Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust (movie)
Escaflowne (movie)
Akira (movie)
Jin-Roh: The Wolf Brigade (movie)
Ghost In The Shell (movie) (the series has way too much filler and tries way too hard to be a crime drama with less drama and more accuracy and technicality.)
anything by Miyazaki. even non-anime lovers would like his films. namely Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke (seriously one of the most badass movies i've ever seen, shooting off demon heads and such. intriguing plot and animation as well. watch this, those who are new.), and Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind.
a good way to find decent anime is to start with the movies. there's a lot of great movies by great directors that were allowed the budget and time needed to make something good.

Did they make a Death Note anime? I know they made a live action movie early this year but I thought it was just manga other than that. I read about half of the seiries and it was AMAZING.
yes, there's a Death Note anime

Does anyone else have a problem with Japanese humor? One of the reason's I haven't watched anything new is I just can't stand it. FMA had quite a bit of it, but that was one of the first shows I watched so I still had a tolerance. The last show I tried to watch was Trigun, while cool, pushed me over the edge with the silliness. Anyone else like this?

Yeah, just like Hive said, there is one. But it only just started airing in Japan this season, so I doubt you'll find it complete anywhere, and you'll have to download fan subs for now. From what I've seen thus far, it's pretty good. Hopefully they can keep it up to the end.

if you don't like anime watch Megas XLR. it is a cartoon all about giant robots, but spends most of its time making fun of the conventions of anime. it is also a great show for anyone into video games.
the only anime show I liked was The Big O, but I never saw the second season.

Hello. Used to watch loads of series a couple years back. Haven't watched anything recent coming out. Lots of good series suggested.
I'm surprised that
PlanetES
was not mentioned yet. It's one of the best series I've seen. It's dramatic, funny, great animation and character development, not to mention a cool realistic space age future.
Deathnote had amazing art, premise and first act, but ends rather disappointingly.
either most Japanese writer/directors are really bad, or that's a recurring style on purpose. because most anime endings seem like they tried to make it suck. or the whole series suffers from filler. which isn't surprising, since most television suffers from too much filler. it's rare that the Japanese put a 26-episode cohesive story on tv, broken into 30-minute parts, all the while keeping it interesting and keeping viewers every week as not to rely purely on DVD sales for income.

I tried watching Planetes, but I found it really boring... I made it at least half way through, maybe a little further... but then I just lost interest in it and it fell to the wayside.

So I went through a phase a few years ago... I moved to Albuquerque cause I needed to get out of California... and I met someone who lived out there... so ABQ it was! I quickly found out that there is nothing to do in New Mexico except for watch movies, anime, roleplay, and shoot things in the mesa... None of them get boring for me :)
Some of my favorites
Escaflowne (series)
Trigun
Cowboy Bebop (series and movie)
Macross (mostly Macross Plus)
Battle Angel (what little there is)
Ninja Scroll (movie)
GTO
Ranma 1/2 (all of it)
Tenchi Muyo (all of it)
El Hazard
Magic Users Club
Totoro
Lod
Some Girly Anime I like
Chobits
Saber Marionette J
Fushugi Yugi
Ah My Goddess
and of course all the movies that have been realeased in the theatres: Kiki's, Mononoke, etc....
These anime kept me from shooting many the moniter and clothes washer while I was in the 'desert'... :)

I actually like that about Japanese humour, and Ranma 1/2 is one of my all time favorites and it's anything goes style martial arts humour is right up my alley.
I can't stand most of the fans though and ripping on me for watching the cartoons dubbed.
FLCL is awesome too. I find Myazaki hit and miss I love spirited away though.

Yeah, Ranma 1/2 was the first anime I watched knowing it was "anime", and of course, way back in the day, it was dubbed and that was your only option. That means that I now hear Ranma in my head in english, with his english dub voice, and that's who the character is to me. Same with all the other characters in the show. Too bad they couldn't keep the same voice actor all the way through, and that kinda ruined the later seasons for me.

I use to watch anime all the time until I was 12. There is only a couple shows that I could still bare to watch:
Cowboy Bebop
FLCL
Gundam 008 (Adult Swim should bring this shit back)
Outlaw Star
Trigun (weird, but I liked it)
Ghost in the Shell (the movie)
And thats about it. Everything else I've seen is and was extremely crappy even when I was 10.

I haven't watched as much anime as some of the other people here, but I'd still be willing to watch pretty much anything that hasn't been given a children's makeover. Some of the ones I'd recommend are:
Bleach - It's only up to about episode 13 or 14 for the english release, but it gets really awesome at about episode 27 or 28, which is when I first started watching the Japanese version. So if you'd like to start getting into the series, then download the Japanese version.
FLCL - It's only 6 episodes long, but each episode is completely packed with awesomeness.
Witch Hunter Robin - It's 26 episodes long and it gets really boring near the middle to end of the series, but it's still worth watching through the entire series.
Fullmetal Alchemist - I had downloaded all 51 episodes of this series and planned on watching a few episodes at a time, but found it so entertaining that I ended up watching through the entire series all at once, including the movie which ends the series, Conqueror of Shamballa.
Samurai Champloo - I've only seen about 2 or 3 episodes of this series, but I still loved every single one of them. This is one that I'll have to watch through myself.
Naruto - I'm not really sure why I like this series. I think it's because Naruto reminds me of myself when I was a kid.
Gankutsuou - An anime series based off of The Count of Monte Cristo. It's 24 episodes long, though I've only been able to get ahold of the first 20, but it's still really good once you're able to get used to the art.
Trigun - This one's always been my favorite. Take a look at this one no matter what if you haven't already.
South Park - Season 8 episode 1. All of the boys turn into anime characters. Check it out.
Hayao Miyazaki - A japanese man with a japanese name. He does make some really awesome anime though, so check out every single movie by him.

After I had read the Naruto manga, I couldn't watch the anime version, it just couldn't hold up to it. But my roomates were totally into it, so I ended up seeing a large amount of the anime anyways, and just kept being let down. It did have it's moments of goodness though, but dropped the ball in many many more instances. And don't get me started on the filler episodes once they caught upto the manga storyline and left it to do their own thing. My god is that bad. Manga is much better, anyone who likes Naruto and hasn't read the manga, do yourself a favor and go read it, you'll love it.
As for Gankutsuou, I love it! I'm an artist on the side, and was starting to think that all the anime of the time was looking all the same. Then Gankutsuou came and totally shocked me! It was such a refreshing change from the same old stuff. I couldn't get enough of it, but sadly, many of my friends couldn't get into it, and found the new art direction distracting. I say, if you want to give it a fair chance, watch more than an episode or two. Give it some time, and it'll grow on you.

Since you've been watching Samirai Champloo, I assume your still in the samurai ninja sort of mood. Ease into anime with the stuff you start with.
I'd recommend you watch Shura No Toki Side Story. Its about a deadly hand to hand combat style and of three generations of male family members who pass it on and their adventures. Pretty short, I think 26 episodes.
Samurai X is not so good. I believe its a waste of time. Funny at times but the ending is crap.
The lastest craze is Basilisk. Its real good with lots of fighting scenes and a little forbidden romance.
If you like the more smaller cuter charcters who fight, try Naruto. Its gone past 100 episodes and I have just found it the fillers (side stories not linked to main) will continue until autumn 2007 (ahhhhh!!! Bloody people!! Stop milking it!!!!!1 1/2 years of fillers already now!!!).
I extremely recommend Bleach. It has a alot of fighting sequences and a really good story.
