This series (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wild_Cards) is two issues in now and, should be, easy to pick up.
It is a non-traditional super hero book based on teh Wild Cards novels, which are a series of short stories that share a common background world, though written by different authors. The world is a little bit darker than most, but this also serves to highlight the point of hope, heroism and greatness.
The story revolves around a murder mystery and a plot against pathetic beings known as Jokers. They are not entirely unlike Morlocks from the old days of the X-Men. They have all the screwed up facets of being a superhuman and rarely have any meaningful benefits. The story has been good so far, very fun to read.
The art is pretty good. Easy to follow, tells the story well and serves the mood of this piece.
I recommend it to anyone who is open to a non-traditional superhero story.
