Veronica's wants to giveaway a Zune, details in the show!
Pat reviews Gateway One all-in-one PC. Which offers better storage growth the NAS or Drobo? Does 1080p matter on 32" or smaller HDTV? Why the 70's really ended, hint: it's not because of high oil prices. And it's festival of DIY as we look back at this year's Maker Faire.
Check it out here (http://revision3.com/tekzilla/plaid/).

About the 70's... some people should really look in the mirror before making fun (no one on Tekzilla, of course. :D). "I weep for the future." (name that movie)

Great show. The 70s were my childhood too, so that site brought up more than a few flashbacks. One note, you might want to put a seizure warning or something before the first part of the outtakes, that was a bit painful.
Ps. Veronica saying basically and then almost cracking up was hilarious:D

The camera switching reminds me of pixel perfect, and seizure warning =/
It was a really fun episode.
Too bad US residents only...

It's time for you start wearing your kilt.
Maybe even an attempt to growl? =)

Another great show! I was glad to see the return of the out takes at the end...in the future, I hope to see one where cute, sweet little Veronica cusses :)
One thing I did note is from the discussion on virus/malware/spyware/etc protection. Veronica commented she was happy she ran OS X and didn't need all that. Well, I run Vista and XP (and I have a Mac too, so don't think I'm a Mac hater) and don't run all that crap either. Instead, I keep my machines behind a router, and I don't download and install programs I don't trust, surf sites I can't trust, etc and so on. The only "protection" type software I ever use is on my laptop I do run a firewall, because when I'm doing the mobile thing I don't know who else is on that wi-fi hotspot with me. But my desktop machines all run bare naked. I've said it in other forums, and I'll say it here too. The single most important part of security on any computer is the device between the chair and the keyboard.

I really hate making statements like that (and Patrick did egg me on, so that was part of it). Macs certainly aren't invulnerable, and it has a lot to do with their relatively small market share.
And you're right, a smart user is the first (and best) line of defense against attacks.

Very good show, gateway segment was fine and very well done, very informative, I personally find price of systems to be way out of control. BTW nice shirt and thank you for letting the mole out.

Awesome ep Patrick and Veronica! I loved your opinion on the small HDTVs. Definitely was something I was looking into as well.
I am in agreement with ivandoga, that some system prices are way out of hand! I decide what to buy and then do all of the IT purchases for my company. I constantly see machines that have less than another machine that is 1/3 the price. I have brand loyalty, but I refuse to pay just for a name.

Good episode. I hope you guys get screeners for the calls. I can think of a lot of 17 years olds calling "You're so HOT". By the way, I really like this pic. Oh, and I agree on the mac thing. I thought of the same thing that Veronica said after reading that email.

I agree with you. I'm glad they got Veronica on there, they're a great couple that seem to flow very well and yes an old TechTV shirt would be awesome.

Great ep, good to hear about a PC brand every now and then, though I agree with the guy a few posts back that the dell's XPS One looks so much better than the gateway. That is begging to get reviewed on this show.
I think these were the best outtakes I've seen in awhile.

I use both OSX and Windows at home. An iMac and a custom-built workstation running XP64. Use ClamX on the mac and Avast Home Ed on the pc. Both free.
Both are connected to the net through separate hardware firewalled routers.
That's all you need really. And as long as you torrent responsibly or surf the web with care you should be fine.

Well, they're really great--both together and separately, but I don't think they're there yet, though I think they will get there given time. Kate & Leo were a little shaky in the beginning, as one would expect. However, no one has yet approached what Kate & Leo were towards the end of their stint as 'The Screensavers' (aka the best tech show ever, no, make that the best show ever... period).
(OK, yeah, I really, really miss ZD-TV/TechTV.)

True, but actually - given the suckitude of Leopard's security features (crap firewall, library randomisation that doesn't actually randomise some of the most crucial aspects and that it's actually more prone to the same sort of application-targeted attacks than XP/Vista) I hope Apple security doesn't end up like iTunes - one size fits all, and that for the dumbed-down crowd - and that someone ( probably not Apple) steps up to the plate and offers more third-party protection of the OS.
For me, Macs are used for far more in-public duties and this involves a fair amount of roaming around other people's networks - and given Leopard's far greater reliance on security through obscurity, even compared to a standard antivirus-less Vista rig running as an administrator (which I usually don't) I feel like I'm walking around with my pants down, metaphorically speaking.

kinda off topic but what was the name of that CD in the all-in-one gateway? That song sounded familiar, but I can't remember the name of the band.... argh.
Hey patrick, I liked the sound of the song you were listening to. Who is it by?

Great show as usual.
I am considering a drobo myself and I am wondering what Patrick and Veronica were referring to when they discussed how some people dont like the interface and they should be able to drag and drop.
Can anyone elaborate on this? i thought i saw video of the drobo guys on their website using explorer to move files back and forth?

I might be wrong, but that sounded like the Scofflaws on the Gateway segment (I was just watching it but at work and couldn't hear it really well so I'm not sure). I actually came to the forums just to see if anybody else had posted who it was.
