I don't know what the significance of an iMac is compared to a regular PC running Windows or Linux, but I assume speakers are speakers..
That said, my recommendation is the most expensive pair of Logitech speakers that you're willing to buy. They've always sounded the best to me, especially for the money.
That or if Klipsch is still making PC speakers, they're good, but expensive, I think. At least last time I looked at them they were.

Mentioned the imac for color or design purposes. I've been looking at Logitech and I've had a few sets from them before. I remember the guys or TRS or Diggnation recommeded something from the Logitech Z series, but I'm not sure which set.

I just watched an episode of Tekzilla (http://revision3.com/tekzilla/speakers) that talked about computer speakers. Maybe they covered something that would interest you.

I've been very happy with my Logitech Z-2300's (http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/speakers_audio/home_pc_speakers/devices/231&cl=ca,en). Great bass from the fairly large subwoofer, and a good price (I got mine for about $150 CAD, but you can probably find them for less now if you shop around). I believe that Tekzilla recommended them in their post-speaker-roundup episode due to viewer recommendations as well. I don't know how well they would go with a white iMac, although you can change the front from black to silver by taking off the detachable 'screen'.

The bose ones are sick. get those. If you can't drop the bucks...look into the logitech x-240s. They sound great as well.

I own the Logitech Z-5500 speakers and I must say that I love them. Check out some of the reviews. Very few bad qualities, just like you'd expect from logitech.
I would suggest looking around eBay for this set of speakers, or waiting till they go on sale. I got mine for about $200, but they go as high as $400.

Yeah, I have the same set and love them.
Within the past month or so, Amazon actually had it on sale for $140 (with rebate), so I would say keep checking Amazon once in awhile if you're interested in this set. It's back up to $200+, but never know when it'll drop.
Don't think it'll go too well with the iMac in terms of looks, but it is a great speaker set.

I was looking into 5.1 speaker sets recently and, for the money, you can't beat the z-5500 speaker package. The volume available is crazy and the ability to decode Dolby Digital and DTS streams means that you can plug in a PC to the analogue input and a DVD (or Blu-Ray/HD-DVD/CD player) into the SPDIF and therefore you only need one set of speakers in the room for both devices.
