I have a zune and an ipod. I would like to copy the downloaded songs I own from ipod to zune and zune to ipod. is there a software that will convert one to the other so I do not have to buy songs twice?

Did you buy them from Itunes or somthing?
Not sure about your existing music, but in the future you should consider moving away from purchasing music from the device manufacturer, and instead use third parties like amazon and emusic.

if you stuck to mp3's, no problem. The protected formats are what screws you.
I second Amazon, bought a few mp3 albums from them and it was painless and high quality.

DRM'd songs > Burn to CD from iTunes / PURCHASED songs from Zune Marketplace > re-rip to MP3 is the only solution without DMCA-breaking actions.

Tunebite. Buy it or download it from your favorite torrent-tracker.
What is basically does is that it opens the song in iTunes and re-records it. Sort of it recording your outgoing audio. (It's been a while, but it works with wma and AAC)
Or, it just tries to open the song, then sending the song metadata to iTunes servers to request the encryption code in order to play it - then to play and record the outgoing audio.
Whatever seems reasonable

If you have trouble with iTunes DRM watch episode 4 of the Br0ken. It will tell you how to remove the DRM.
