I'm really disappointed in GTA IV's radio stations. Liberty Rock Radio isn't too bad: Heaven & Hell, Black Sabbath; Evil Woman, Electric Light Orchestra; some Heart, Stevie Nicks. No mainstream/popular Rock, Pop, Rap, Metal. Very disappointing.

Yeah, even though there are a COUPLE gems in there, overall the soundtrack is pretty bad. Gotta love Vladivostock though!

I gotta admit, I miss KROSE from SA.

Even with the sound effects turned down and the music levels turned up I can barely hear the radio when I am driving around, so I haven't noticed much. I usually stick to the talk radio if I even think about the radio station, which isn't often. Every once in a while I'll get in a car that has the rock station on and I notice that its the smashing pumpkins playing or something, and that's about it.
I WISH they had the custom stations from the Xbox/PC versions of the last generation, where you have a playlist and then that acts as a radio station you can select. I have the 360 version and I tried selecting some music from the dashboard and it played over everything and just got in the way.

I love my Radio Broker, but aside from that, everything else has been a bit disappointing. A few goodies, but overall, meh. Much rather listen to talk radio. I haven't even bothered opening the CD I got from the special edition.

I think the song "Nikogo ne zhalko" from Vladivostok FM sounds a lot like the Soprano's theme song. (http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_ss_dmusic?url=search-alias%3Ddigital-music&field-keywords=soprano%27s+theme&x=0&y=0)

I was very disappointed as well. There are a few songs I like, but thats really it. I can't believe they left out the custom station this time around.

I disagree, the radio this time around is not a smattering of 'hits' of course, but it is quite varied, and incredibly well done to fit the mood and tone of the game. Also, it takes some time to find good stations. For example, during the game's narrative, I pretty much listed to talk and JNR (exceptional radio station, btw, can't beat that classic jazz). However, as I started jacking cars that had some other stations on, I started to really enjoy them. "The Journey" really grew on me (and it has that awesome Philip Glass track from one of the trailers, simply epic music fit for chase scenes and dawn/twilight/night tours of the city), as has LRR, and LCHC. Lazlow returns with his awesomeness, and when driving through Broker/Dukes, there is nothing like IF99 or K109 to get the groove going. Tuff Gong for those cruises down the street, and hell, I can even get behind Fusion because of it's modernist feel.
And that's just the surface.
The radio is not just about the hits, it's always been about the feel. When playing VC or SA, there is a certain feel that the game needs to attain to put you in that decade, the music really helps do that, especially in VC. With IV, the music is really representative of the games themes and previously mentioned mood and tone. Having a soundtrack of mostly hit songs from last year would do little more than give you that "oh yeah..i know that!" feeling for a few fleeting moments. As it stands, the soundtrack acts like a film score (as it really always has), working to model the feeling, and keep the game timeless.

Yeah I must agree, one of the things I love about this series is the radio stations.
I hope they do like with Burnout and make a custom radio station available :D
yeah, it isn't great... but vladivostok is so cool

It's actually my favourite soundtrack of any GTA game.
Even though there's no hits I've found so much new music on Journey, Radio Broker, the dancehall station, the hip-hop stations. I'd rather have good music that lets me expand my musical tastes than a collection of hits.
When I want to hear classics I'll listen to the almost all Bob Marley reggae station or Liberty Rock.

I think the soundtrack is great. I think the only thing you can really argue is that there is no real "theme" based on the fact that the game takes place in the present. Look back in 5-10 years and you'll probably change your mind.
The Journey is great to listen to if you want to experience the game cinematically. Then there are the "genre" stations like Liberty Rock, The Beat, LCHC, etc. I spend the majority of my time listening to LCHC and hearing bands like Murphy's Law, Agnostic Front, etc...Add that to Sisters of Mercy, Stevie Nicks, Aphex Twin, etc and the soundtrack is just amazing!
If you have a problem with the music, then that could be a telling sign that music produced currently is crap, and that I could agree with ;)

I just enjoy the Public Radio. My room mate had one of the stations from 3 or VC(can't recall) and we'd just listen to the entire station track. My favorite parts wound up being the talk segments. I enjoy now that there is TV too. The soundtrack does fit the game, and I don't mind it. Personally I just drive around listening to the great commercials and shows.

I do agree that the soundtrack was given less attention than previous games. But I am not that big on music anyway. Well, not current day music.
I always flip to JNR, the jazz station. I am not that knowledgeable but, I do enjoy Jazz when it is the good stuff. A lot of new stuff for me and I like it.
Although it is odd to be on a gay date with the intent of killing the guy and waiting around the corner, with your eyes on the place listening to jazz music. Such is life in Liberty City.

Soundtrack is bad. I liked when they ued the "hit" songs becase I'm not into discovering new music while I'm trying to mow down whores and cops. I can't concentrace on the music, I need a familiar tune.
My faveorite was the rock station from Vice City.
Best song on GTA:IV = Goodbye Horses. You know you love it :p

Haha, JNR always provides and awesome soundtrack to missions :D.
You should sign up for socialclub.rockstargames.com and use ZIT! (248-555-0100 i think) to keep track of some of the cool songs you find.
om3rta: it's not even so much as 'hits vs. new music' as it is providing a cool soundtrack to fit with the game. The radio stations this time around do a fantastic job of providing said soundtrack.

I see your point but I really, really like this 'soundtrack'. It feels more natural to me as far as playing the game goes. If you break it down track to track against other GTA's, I don't think I could argue a whole lot though.
No one mentions Electroshoc. Probably the best station on there, but then again I DJ and electronic music is my favorite genre and I already knew all of the songs on there for the most part, so I have some bias.

ok, so it's not crammed with hits (and I do moss K-Rose), but there's a good selection, and it fits the game. I've actually already purchased a handful of tracks through the ZiT/Social Club/Amazon thing. lovin the Rock, Jazz, Hard Core, and 'The Journey' stations. (Not to mention the Bob Marley and Russian stations.)

the best station in my opinion was the hardcore one they really captured NY hardcore form the bands and song selection. Also the dj is great, a real NY hardcore veteran Jimmy Gestapo of Murphy's Law
Murphy's Law - What Will The Neighbors Think (Should have been included in the soundtrack)

I'm gonna have to disagree with the original poster.. I think this soundtrack is quite phenomenal. It really sets the mood for the game and feels like a real collection of radio stations for this city, rather than a "Best of the 19__'s." LCHC alone should be enough to satisfy everyone.
Heheh... LCHC is the only station I don't listen to :)

I think alot about the soundtrack can be summed up by juliette lewis on Radio Broker "Music that gives you hope that rock isnt dead." I totally agree with the soundtrack aspect of things. I listen to alot of music but if you really want to listen to your Billboard 100 then put in on your xbox 360 and play it yourself. I guarantee you though if you put it on any station during a mission you'll find something that fits. Whether its a mellow cool track like your in Reservoir Dogs or a Russian rapper making you feel like your in a modern day russian mob movie or something. GTA soundtracks always take me to that specific place in time and this just happens to be now.
