Adding thermal imaging to your car is a lot easier than you might think... think car stereo plus some light fabrication. Seeing further in the dark? That's priceless.

Watch and download the episode here. (http://revision3.com/systm/flir)

Thermal imaging is intresting...the price is also.....intresting.

Cute kid Patrick.

I think the ads in this show was longer than the actual show. I know things are different with David gone, and everything but I just hope it gets better soon. On a positive note I like the idea of Night Vision just needed more. and Patrick you got a pretty cute and awesome kid, but I bet you already knew that

QFT.

Less than a 20 minute show with 3 minute plus advertisings....

On a side note, most mobile installers recommend using a crimp connection instead of solder. The reason being is most people do not solder correctly causing the wire to become brittle and eventually the vibration of a car can break the solder joints loose.

Otherwise, keep up the good shows, love seeing all this stuff.

Positives: Patrick's kid and the Swedish intern. As long as she feels comfortable with English, keep using her on the show.

Negatives: Show length.

Mixed thoughts: The content. Cool stuff but too expensive for most.

Overall an OK episode but I think the show needs some technical assistance for Patrick.

BTW, did anyone see the episode of "Top Gear", BBC America, when Jeremy was reviewing the Mercedes with the IR camera and the speedo changed to the monitor when the camera was enabled? Cool stuff, but that was a $100K car.

Good ep, albeit too short! Positives though: 1. cool idea, 2. keep the intern as she was cool to hear from instead of Patrick (no offense bro!) as usual, and 3. cool shots of your kid Patrick!

Good show I think.... Way to many ads  I didn't time it, but It was enough that I told Miro to skip the show after the fourth add in about 2 minutes.
I understand that you're in this for the money, but I watch for content. You need to charge more for the ads, or group them together at the beginning & end of the show.
As soon as you get me, you cut to an ad, and I loose interest. With TV, I change channels, with Miro, I delete...
I like the show, but if this is how it's going to be (45 sec of content-30 sec of ads), then I'm going to remove the feed from Miro...

*EDIT*
Good looking kid Patric. Hope you & your family are doing well. Make sure to spend time with them, the time goes fast. Seems like just yesterday my first was born, now I have a 4 month old grandson ;)

The show was alright. The ads were longer than the segments between. You guys need to bring it back old school. Start building stuff again.

Rather nifty device, only problem I see is, where I live it's illegal for the driver to have line of sight to a monitor of any kind that is turned on while the car is in motion*. A thermal imaging camera such as this is IMHO a safety device that should be on while the car's moving...

(*yes, technically reverse cameras are illegal in NSW, stupid govt)

man, it seemed like everytime i put the remote down after skipping some ads, they played another ad reel.. felt like whack-a-mole, or something.

If the show is only 10 minutes long don't put the same amount of ads as if the show is 30-40 minutes.

cool topic though, but really lame how it's so expensive. =/

I'm sorry, but that was the saddest episode of Systm I've seen on this site. There were ads like every few seconds. Not only that but the episode seemed like a big ad for this night vision camera.

I really hope this doesn't become a trend. I understand the need for advertising and money, but previous episodes balanced it off with a whole lot higher quality and quantity of content.

This makes me want some predator sunglasses. Could you imagine running around in thermal imaging sight? That would be sweet. I wonder if you could cut that down into 12 volt batteries. I would easily pay 4k for predator sunglasses. ARG!

I wish the episode touched more into the usability. It would have been awesome to see how far he could take it instead of just the car usage.

Yes this is the lamest show ever. Patrick I understand you have a child and a life, but you really only have two hours to fill each week, for someone like myself who works 40-60 hours to provide for my own children I have little sympathy for someone not putting his whole effort into a subject or project that they signed on to do. I have stayed up the late nights with a sick or cranky child at all ages and still put in my 8 to 10 hours in each day, the people in the tech industry sure don't put much effort into the work they do.

I'm sorry to rant, but Systm and Tekzilla has really turned into low attention span theater. between the shows short episodes and Tekzilla being a question and answer show, neither come close to The Screen Savers, even DLTV adds more substance each week.

For someone knocking Leo for his idea to show 25 hours of video each week, and the numerous podcasts, I really don't see you giving us a better alternative, or at least as much effort as him.

I only criticize because I care, and I don't want to see Revision3 die on the vine. I truly believe these are the flag ship shows, or at the very least the only shows I care to watch on this video network.

was alittle short, but I liked it. I like seeing cool little non-standard gadgets I could add to my car (or truck if I ever fix it) As much as I wanted the product, it was WAY outta my price range. Actually did the rolling wi-fi access point ever finish? I really liked that idea for my own truck.

Rev3 , you got to be joking... an 8:45 minute show...
I really enjoy all of your shows but it seems they are going down a path where its shorter shows and more ads...

I went back and timed the actual content in this show -

Excluding the last 45 seconds, which was just outtakes and thanking the suppliers, the show was of 8 minutes. 158 seconds of this (or 2mins 38 seconds) were the ads and the system intro music. This left 388 seconds of content (or 6 minutes and 28 seconds).

6 minutes... somebody at Rev3 needs to place some standards into show runtime.

The past couple of episodes have seemed a little... lacking... But having seen plenty of amazing episodes come out of this I'm going to attribute it to the lack of co-host, the adorable kid Pat has (my sister recently had a kid and my brother and his wife are expecting, so I understand and am happy for ya!!!), and that it's just a transitional time for the show right now... and that no matter how long the show is there is still a quota for ad time and fixed cost to produce a show. Though I did prefer when the host or co-host incorporates the
ads into the show, with a car episode that should have been pretty easy to transition from "safety" add-on to buckle up.

All in all, I'm interested to see if the show is gonna get a new co-host, even a guest host for a few episodes while a suitable co-host is found.

Hold up dude, Im sure Patrick works a lot more than 2hours a week, I am willing to bet he puts in more than 40-60 hours a week. But there is no need in knocking him or the industry just because I co-host quit I understand why things are like this, I just don't like it. and I know that if Patrick can help it in any way he will because he loves this industry but don't insult the man saying he doesn't work. Thats just low, sad, and wrong

The Adds were really annoying and chopped up the show way too much, especially for the overall length. Just put the adds in one big lump somewhere

I realize it's been said a bunch of times already, but if the show is only going to be 8 minutes long, I don't want half of it to be ads. This is the very reason I quit watching television. Given the content, this really should have been a subSystm.

Or given that the show was already sponsored by FLIR since they hooked up Systm with the device, maybe that should have been enough? I agree, but with that being said I also understand that they either have to charge us or charge some advertisers that don't know of anything better to do with their money... I'm just a little concerned with how they're bribing these government orgs into sponsoring the shows. That's bizarre.

Omg I was wondering how long it would take someone to bring up the Click-it or Ticket ad after the whole Airforce-fest. It is no big deal nobody says anything about it when it is on tv.... like the bastards let the government put a commercial on the Price is Right...Bob Barker must be a Agent it's just money. When Patrick says I think that unless you support Insert Gov. Ad Here your not a American. or something like that then I will quit watching.....btw top shelf I know your not going that far i just wanted to say this before someone else did :)

I have to agree with most other posts here.

The length of this episode and the ads to content ratio, just make the show look pitiful.
The producers seem to think that content is something which should be placed between the amount of ads that have to be in each episode. Not even "regular" broadcast networks do it this way. If a 2 hour movie has 8 ad breaks, it doesn't mean that a 30 minute documentary will get 8 ad breaks as well. The amount of ads are always scaled by the length of the content.

I've complained about the length of some of these systm episodes before, and to reiterate: If you cannot do at least a 30 minute show every week, then by all means skip a week or two and gather up a couple of small topics in one decent sized episode. Or are you so overcome with greed that you must release something every week, even if it's just 6 minutes of content, just so you can stuff it full of ads?

I'm going to give this show one more chance, but then it's going to be over. If I want short videos I'll go to youtube, if I want ads I'll get regular TV. If you are not going to provide anything additional, then I no longer have the incentive to watch that I once found in this and other shows from Rev3.

I say just do a live read of the sponsors at the end like diggnation and the totally rad show if the show is a short episode... say in the 15-20 min range. If its 25-30+ mins, then include the commercials.

Man... I hadn't watched Systm in a long time. Now I kind of regret it. I was moved to come and post about all the Ads and how quickly they came. Lo and behold, I'm not the only one who didn't like it.

Come on! This is version 3 ;), not 1, not 2. Be different.

Yeah, I liked the topic, but too many commercials...2 minutes 15 seconds of ads, compared to 6minutes 10 seconds of actual showtime. Wow.

I don't think that's fair at all. Not every topic they cover is going to fill 30 minutes. That's the whole beauty of IPTV--it doesn't have to. And just because they had a lot of ads (which DID get annoying) doesn't mean they're consumed by greed. It's called paying the bills, so that they can make longer, better episodes.

speed
05-14-2008, 07:10 AM
There's paying the bills and then there's just being greedy. I accept the number of ads in Tekzilla, and accept sponsors on Diggnation and TRS because I realize they have bills to pay. However, 1/4 of the show shouldn't be ads, that's just too far. Like I said before, if I wanted all those ads, I'd go back to regular TV and get rid of my PVR.

All I ask is that the number of ads be scaled to the shows length. Even if Patrick can't do a full 30 min Systm every week, don't insult me like that (especially when the episode itself was a giant ad).

edwinm
05-14-2008, 11:42 AM
I don't post here very often, but the length and number of ads on this particular episode is enough to prompt a response. I understand that there are bills to pay, but the ratio of ad time to content time seemed awfully high. I also realize that there isn't always going to be enough to fill thirty minutes every week because each episode of Systm tends to cover only one topic in depth, unlike Tekzilla which has several segments to fill the time. At least it is better than it was before Patrick when we would go for months without an episode, but still the time spent on ads should be a certain percentage of show length and that percentage should be significantly less that it was on this episode.

ptrussell
05-14-2008, 09:51 PM
I like the episode as the topic hits close to home. I dont like to drive at night as it gets hard to see being dazzled by headlights and the loss of contrast.

On a future episode of Systm or Tekzilla I would like to have a comparison of
vision enhancement systems. I believe Lexus and some other car companies has built their own systems. There are other companies with IR cameras but they may go more for military jobs.

These are government paid ads so I dont think they can edit them short or change the format. I hope they pay well. I would like the ads more if they were tailored to my taste and especially if they are useful. I like Go Daddy but I am not building a website. If Amazon had an ad with a discount code that would be cool.

I agree other episode's ads seem to be a lot more tolerable than this episode's ads. This one seemed more like TV in that there seemed to be more ads than content.
