They already confirmed that though, before that trailer.

See: http://blog.us.playstation.com/2008/04/15/inside-playstation-network/

Some of the key pillars that will make this an experience a success are:

* The PlayStation community;
* Free online gaming;
* Digital media download services; and
* Original content
and
Many of you have been hearing rumblings about a video service that will allow you to download full-length TV shows and movies via PLAYSTATION Network for North America. While I don’t have any new announcements here for the PlayStation Nation, it’s already been confirmed that we’ll be offering a video service for PS3 in a way that separates the service from others you’ve seen or used. Ultimately the goal of the PLAYSTATION Network service will be to break through the overwhelming clutter of digital media to give you the TV, movies and gaming content you want. More on this very soon …

That's from April 15th. ;)

like ever other company other than itunes I seriously doubt that the tv downloads will be available in Canada... and if they are it'll be the same crap that's on Canadian iTunes which is C grade programming at best.
Still... I guess it's a good first step.

The Playstation Store isn't region-locked, so you could just download from the US Store if you are right and we get nothing but crap up here.

I download demos and videos from the UK, JP, and HK stores whenever they get something we don't.

It's possible that Sony would change it and lock it down, but I'm pretty sure that I read they don't want to, and videos would be based on open standards rather than DRM-infected garbage video filetypes.

they would have to make it region locked unless they were somehow able to secure rights for every country. Seeing as Canada can't even get Hulu I'm really doubting they'll give us the same thing they have in the US.

You just have to make yourself a US account then. The PS3 is region free so make use of this & enjoy it.

We're in the same boat here... I find it hard to get excited about "features" I'm never going to see here in Australia.

The catch is with the local TV networks. We still don't have an official Windows Media Center programme list due to copyright issues!

I guess I'll just keep on downloading my TV from bittorrent...

It wouldn't have to be much different than all the DVD players that are half assed region locked. Many of the same DVD players are sold around the world with different region codes set and the ability to play both PAL and NTSC. It's trivial to change those region codes to those of your current country, and it is cheaper for them to just manufacture one version of the player and set it differently for each respective region.

That really makes me hope for the option of free commercial TV (which I would do) or paying for non-commercial versions... though in my heart I know it's probably just marketing crap.
