Hi, I am in Quebec, Canada, I am about to switch to VOIP instead of landline. I would like to know what standalone phones are available and what to specifically check in the tech specs of those so I don't screw up everything in my network?
Every pc is on Hardy Heron at my place and I would possibly build an hackintosh soon when it gets a tiny bit more stable...
Thanks in advance!

skype has alot of standalone voip phones. However being someone who does this for a living, I would Install a Voip Router and Run a Cat 3 line from Router to your NID Network Interface Device. Be Sure to Disconect Your Existing Land Service from you NID. This way you could place any land line phone you want at any RJ 14/11 Terminal in your Home.
This Link is a complete discription of how to distibute voip over your home network.

cat 5 might be better. One drawback of the voip only is the unreliable access to emergency services . I built a trixbox, but later wiped it. Until everyone is on voip, landlines will be necessary and a needed reduncancy.

Hi, thanks for your replies but I am still lost here.
I took a loong look at the first link you gave for the instructions and I think it just confused me.
I don't think I want to completely rewire my place...
I am moving from Bell to Acanac.ca (this is not an AD, I am not affiliated with them in any way ;) ). Their VOIP residential service seems fine for 10$/month but I don't get how I will set it up. I just want to be able to leave the PC shut down and take a call when it rings...
They suggest to buy Linksys - Sipura SPA-2102 but I would prefer a phone I can directly plug in my Adsl modem/router.
I would like just one line with multiple wireless receivers like we see on the market with standard phones.
If combining this linksys thing + current non-voip phones is the way to go to get it working then I will do it but I just don't know...
Thanks
Johnny

Vonage sells/sold the Linksys - Sipura SPA-2102 as well. How our phone is set up is cable modem-> router-> piece of cat 5-> Netgear switch-> regular telephone. As long as the modem, router and switch are powered, the phone works.
The reason we used a switch is A) running out of ports on router and B) switch and Linksys VoIP box/phone base station and computers are in another room.
IF you don't need more ports and everything is in one room then go modem ->router -> Linksys - Sipura SPA-2102 -> regular phone.

i've been using primus talkbroadband now for about 2 years, in downtown toronto. Its be great so far and haven't really run into any problems with it. Its about 10 bucks less per month than i was playing for my bell landline and i get all the calling features i never wanted to pay extra for.
I like the face that there is hardware involved in the setup so i don't have to worry about my computer effecting my phonecalls.
