Update: Sony has updated the PixelJunk Eden website with an interesting game key feature, Trophy Support. Take a look for yourselves.

According to our PS3forum industry insider, Sony will be releasing Firmware 2.4 sometime in June around the launch of Metal Gear Solid 4. Also mentioned is that the new Firmware 2.4 will include some of the first PlayStation Trophies. *Note that these will be the 2D trophies found on the XMB and not the 3D trophies coming in Home later this year.

"The SDK 2.40 will be available to dev. late in June. The actual Firmware 2.40 might see the light of day a lot sooner (my personal guess would be launch aligned or slightly before MGS4 )." - PS3Forum Insider

Further into the thread, they state that the Firmware 2.4 will also include improved Audio/Video communication, however don't get your hopes up that this is for in-game XMB. Since developers will receive their 2.4 debug units in June, expect only first party Sony titles to have trophies first.

So whether or not we'll be getting in-game XMB in 2.40 is up in air but there's still room for that "Audio/Video Communication" so we'll see what's up with that.

Makes me wonder how they could improve a/v comms... Since I find it's pretty good right now.. Except in certain games, like COD4 I find it's terrible - people cut out too much, way too much noise.

Hmm, this is curious, indeed! Trophies = achievements, right? So what do we have for a gamerscore? Trophy count? Heh.

I am very excited for the trophies aspect.

I don't have any friends with PS3s, so I haven't had much time to explore some of those abilities? Can you do an audio chat with someone while you play a different game? If not, that could be one of the improvements. Also, can you do private chats with multiple people at the same time?

I didn't even realize ithe PS3 had video chat support. Video chat on the 360 kind of sucks. The quality of the 360 camera is so bad that it's not even worth it.

I like how they couldn't just call them achievements...

Agreed, if you're going to Jock the 360. Just blatantly do it.

Yeah, you can't chat right now in different games, but I wouldn't expect that unless we got in-game XMB.. My comment about wondering what improvements could be made was with the idea that it'd be without in-game XMB ("Firmware 2.4 will also include improved Audio/Video communication, however don't get your hopes up that this is for in-game XMB").

The video/voice chat can go up to at least 4 people at a time.. Not sure if it does more than that or not. Several of us TRSers have been in 4-person chats before, together. I was there!

it might be because you will actually get a little trophy rather than just points for accomplishing something.

You assume the trophy idea came before the idea of something to reward an achievement. I assume the opposite; that the trophy idea was spawned because they felt they couldn't just call it achievements and be done with it.

It fits with Home, though, so I'm not saying they can't call them trophies. Just seems unnecessary.

Well, if you believe Sony, they claim they were working on Home prototypes back in the PS2 days, and I'm sure they thought of trophies back then, even.

Sure, you might not believe them, but I am inclined to think it's entirely possible that they took 5 years or more in developing Home to it's current, unreleaseable, state... With all the delays we've seen even since we just heard about it last year, it isn't surprising to me at all.

You can definitely do video/voice chat on PS3. Regarding what Dolson said, it actually goes up to 6 people. I've only ever been in 4-person chats, though.

I've played/chatted (video or just voice/avatar) with a bunch of the guys from here, including:
- Dolson
- Foxhound362
- Hellfighter
- Zoomtechtv
- NJShadow
- SpectaculaDracula
- Drift
- FashionDR
- etc.

More than once, a group of us were chatting, trying to think of a game to go into together, and just ended up BS-ing around for a while.

Initially I wrote that I thought it went to 8, but I did a search and couldn't find any concrete answer about it. Good to know that it's up to 6. We'll have to try it sometime. :)

Yeah, I vaguely recall the Playstation Eye commercial/trailer, that you can download from the store, showing 6 people on the guy's TV. Plus, I remember that, when you go into the chat room, each of the floating white spheres turns into a friend's avatar or video feed when the join, and there are 5 of them (plus your own avatar/vid feed).

Other than that, it's pure speculation on my part (i.e. I'm pulling it out of my...ear). ;)

The funny thing about getting 4 or more people in there is, since everyone tends to be so spread apart geographically, the feeds start getting a little sketchy. Turning off video feeds keeps it running a bit more smooth.4

I always wonder if my video looks as good as it looks to me when in video chat on the PS3. We've actually been in 5 person video chats, including oneself.
