I looked into the gps software that Patrick recommended, but I was wondering if there is anything free or opensource worth looking into. Thanks

The problem is the maps. They all need to be licenced, which is where the $$$ comes in. Sure, you can plug in a puck and have it tell you lat/long/alt, and you can generate a digital compass, but without the maps does it really matter that you know that you are standing at 38°53'49.5672" -77°2'12.1128" if you can't tell where the nearest Starbucks is?
