This episode tests your visual perception. Which is more? The circumference of the rim of a pint glass, or the height of the pint glass from the bottom to the top?
Watch or download the video here. (http://revision3.com/scamschool/circumference/)

That was cool.
Though I think it would be hard to pull of such a thing in a bar.
"Whoops. Hey! What do I have here? Oh, it's 8 decks of cards"
Non the less, it's a cool trick!

If you don't have or want to carry a ot of deck of cards, use a few packs of cigarettes. They are a little thicker so don't have to use as many.

This is one of those bets that just seems so outlandish that I would smell a scam and have to bet against my better judgment, especially once the cards are added. I would know that the circumference was higher at that point.

Don't know if I mentioned it in the episode, but one of the keys to pulling this off is to not put your dollar in until the last minute... If people see you being contrarian, they'll follow you blindly, assuming you're up to something (which, of course, you are).

Got to make sure you don't stack it too high either. Another deck or 2 would have made it about even looked like.

That's why you make sure to get an exact measurement before you begin... the whole thing should seem like an off-the-cuff experiment, but you better know for sure exactly how high to go.

LOL... back in college I got taken by a number of scams. It's sorta what got me interested. But that's for another episode...

Can't say what for, yet, but I there may be the first new BBOTR in a while coming up in a few days.... :-)
or maybe we'll do a behind-the scenes BBOTR of the diggnation live performance.

I liked this trick. But, I sorta cheated. I knew the diameter of a typical pint glass was at least 3 inches and the height was less than six. That makes the circumference at least 9, so I figured you had at least three inches to play with. I just wasn't sure about the last deck.
Sometimes the circular puzzles are deceptive.

I just got a group of off-duty cops with this at my bar last night. It was awesome! They started out 50/50 and one by one, the fish put the hooks firmly in their own mouths.
btw, if you are at the 99 restaurant (a NE chain) they have a glass called a "hurricane" that the large mixed drinks are served in, they're perfect for this scam, ridiculously tall, and a very narrow mouth. I got these guys with a two-fer. First the pint and cards, then the hurricane.

I actually got this scam off twice since last week.
Friday. I bet a group at the bar .. here is tip .. coasters work AWESOME. I really pushed the height up high. I had so many coasters under it my friend Charlie, who had seen the scam back at my house prior to going out .. he was going to be my plant and the last guy to switch over before I took their cash .. well he even bet against me. It was cutting it close, but there was still about a good three quaters of an inch more to the Circumference. I had them all toss in a toonie ($2) but I got enough people in that I made $14 bucks!
I really pushed this trick at a wedding. This time I planted an empty rye glass at the table a few minutes before hoping the wait staff would not scoop it up. I did the same old, "Are you a gambler?" intro, but this time instead of adding more objects, I simply took the guys rye and placed it on an upside down (planted) empty rye glass. This also seemed to work since no one believe it could actually be more than two of the same glasses stacked. I never made any money but I got a free round of drinks for the wedding couple in my honor. :)
I just wanted to say thanks, this was a really good scam.

We have will be hosting a poker party later in June, and I absolutely can not wait to scam them, my sister-in-law in particular. She is really a great poker player, thus I figure prime to make the big bet! My plan is to scam her and a few other into paying for my buy in of $50.
Another slight twist on this will be that I am going to use poker chips to raise the height of the glass. I have not tried it yet, but I think it should work.
-MayheM
PS - I also want to try the drinking race scam on them at the poker party, but I will do it second, cause its more of a last scam or closer scam I think. Since its kind of douce baggy. Plus I do want to lead with this cause it might getting them thinking outside the box for the circumference scam.
Wish me luck!

You got it. I like the way you're thinking about the order of the setups and takedowns.

My friend does this with shot glasses. Don't try this way when you're already drunk because you'll just end breaking stuff but it doesn't look as set up if you can use stuff you've got on the table already.
Basically unless you've got tall shot glasses you should be able to stack three of them under the pint glass (possibly 4 I'm not sure, try it first to see how many you can fit). You can do it after a round of shots or something, using the empties to make a pyramid under the pint glass.
Start by asking as Brian did and making the bets. Then grab something like 6 shots and stick them all under the pint glass. Ask again. Then grab 3 more and stick those as a new level. Ask again. Then make a big deal of balancing the last one (shouldn't actually be very hard unless you're pretty dunk) and ask a final time. Then collect your cash =)
This is how my friend does it and it looks pretty impressive with the huge pyramid of shot glasses under the pint. On top of being tall it also has the number of shot glasses going for it. Irrelevant, but it impresses some people. (Wow, 10 shots? that's tall!) I imagine he already knows how many he can fit based on the height of the shot glasses he has available.

do you have a picture of the configuration he uses of the shot glasses underneath? I'm having a hard time picturing it.
(by the way, love this variation)

No wonder you were having trouble.. I wrote 6 up there for the base when you actually need 7.
I didn't have shot glasses around so I just used some plastic containers from the kitchen (I can't draw... at all)
Here's the base.. 7
http://smokinn.com/images/step1.jpg
On top of that you stack 3 more, each balanced on 3 from the base.
http://smokinn.com/images/step2.jpg
Then you have the last one balanced on the 3 from the second row
http://smokinn.com/images/step3.jpg
Then you have your pint glass
http://smokinn.com/images/step4.jpg
(Here the height was more than the circumference though =)
I imagine you may not be able to stack all shot glasses this way. The shot glasses he had were almost straight but if the shot glass's top is a lot bigger than the base (think v shape) you might not be able to stack them up that high (or even at all).

I thought of something while I was out tonight. You don't actually need 11 to do the shots version of this trick. The trick can just as easily be done with 7.
Arrange 4 in a square as the first step.
Stack 2 as the next step, each balanced on 2 from the base.
Stack the last one on the two.
Should be just as solid as the version I illustrated above. Just use either depending on how many shots are available to you. I imagine the bigger one would probably look more impressive but the skinnier one might give the illusion of height better. I'd have to try each to see.

I tried this lastnight when having dinner w/ friends. I got really close to putting the glass too high (maybe within 1/2 an inch). But I guess that's what makes it more fun if the answer is really close to eachother...
BTW my friend did cheat. He just put his fingers around his glass and measured. How do you suggest we prevent that Brian?

Just remember that you're the one running the game. If he starts to reach to measure the glass, slap his hand and remind him that this is a guessing game of perceptions, and that taking a measurement first would be cheating. (do it with a smile, of course)

The trickery of perception! Never thought about taking advantage of that. Oh yeah, that's why its called social engineering! lol

Thanks coldv! But I cheated... The vids had a link for the related episode discussion. And since I skipped these threads when I was reading all the other posts, I figured I'd come back and jump right in as I learned the tricks.
I'm looking at the new posts since I was switched to the SSS vids and should really be in bed, well sleeping.

I love Brian's presentation. I've seen this trick just looked like a boring math question.
