Hey everyone
I'm wondering if anyone could help me. I'm trying to figure out how to create text that appears to have been scratched into wood.
Remember the old school desks that people would use their compass to scratch love notes and little pictures into the desk.
So if anyone has done this or seen a tutorial somewhere I would be greatly appreciative
Piece out.
Jez.

The quality of this image isnt the greatest as I had to reduce the size from a couple of megs to 19 kb, but you get the gist. I did this using a very narrow brush for the letters, scratching the pen back and forth for each letter. I then used a bevel and emboss, with the direction going down. I played around with a few other filters, and you can see the effect. Is this image the type you were looking for, Endorean?

Dunno why, but I cant seem to attach images. When I go to manage files, and select the one I want to upload, it says internet explorer cannot display this page. When I refresh, it brings me to a like to the moderator. Anyone have any ideas why this is???

I actually did something similar for a T-shirt design a ways back. It was relatively simple, but turned out pretty well. I will get Peabody and Sherman with the Wayback Machine and see if I can come up with it for you. Basically all I did was create the words with a pencil on paper scanned them in and massaged the image in PS. Found a wood texture reference on the net for the desktop itself.

Thanks,
I was also thinking of creating the words on paper then scanning. Also was thinking that using a displacement map would make it appear to be more realistic to the wood.

Here's a quick-n-dirty I did.
Just did the wood background (per episode...21, I think), duped and darkened it, moving the copy to the bottom layer.
Used text tool (would probably use the pen tool or even just the line tool if I were serious about it). Rasterized it. Added a small ripple. Selected it. Cut it out of the top wood layer. Bevel and emboss. Then reselected and stroked the selection on a new layer with a rough brush and bevel and embossed that.
Decent results for five minutes work, I think.

That's the way I was thinking about doing it.
Do you remember how your 'massaged' the text?

Poking around on another site I found another quick/dirty way to do this so I thought I'd mention it.
Put your text on a layer in white. Change the blending mode to soft light.
Duplicate it, changing the text color to black, then shift this layer a few
pixels whichever way works best to simulate depth. More shift = deep look.
Here's my version:
