ok so i got a firewire cable it is 4pin to 4pin and when i plug it into my video camera and my computer nothing happens and i was wondering what i should do to see the video file do i need a special program or something?

Yes. You need a special program. It doesn't just "appear" as a removable drive.
It might appear as a video source do a video chat though.

Windows Vista includes Vista Movie Maker. If your camera dumps video in a supported format, you should be able to edit in MM. You will however likely need the complete collection of tools and drivers shipped with the camera - which will be in the packaging. The software supplied with the camera should also include basic editing / dump tools as well.

Premiere Elements (http://www.sonycreativesoftware.com/moviestudio) is a popular one for low-budget use.
Less popular, but pretty capable also is Vegas Movie Studio (http://www.sonycreativesoftware.com/moviestudio)

Vegas 8 (http://www.sonycreativesoftware.com/vegaspro) is what I use.
