Not that I'm the judge around here but I think you should stick to what you can and can't say on Cable TV. Or no filter at all. (Except racial slurs and such).

Because I want to be able to say "Chicken *****es!"

kind of odd the forum would have a filter and no the shows. seems like it would be the same across the board

There should be an option to either enable to disable the filter.

It should be turned off for at least the geekdrome forums.

It should be turned off everywhere....Give me a break, the whole language issue on tv and the internet is ridiculous.

We should be able to say what they are saying on the shows because this is a direct discussion. Nothing too harmful like racial slurs but we should be able to say shit.

I guess you could always parse the F word differently, like: f uck.

I personally agree that the filter should be an option for users, but should not be mandatory. Whether it is on by default or off by default is debateable, but I think we all agree that censorship sucks. If you don't want to see words like '****' then you can turn on the filter (or leave it on) and just see the astrixes.

In my experience in other forums, I find that the community can do a fairly good job of policing what it does and does not find acceptable. And certain things which simply should not be tolerated (e.g. racial slurs) can be met with temp or perm bans, and will certainly be met with the ire of the overall community.

Were discussing the rules in the moderator forum as of now and one of the common issues that is being brought up is profanity on the forums. It looks like we all don't mind if it is on the forums, in fact it only makes sense to allow it due to more "adult" shows (like Infected for example). Of course the profanity shouldn't be taken too far as well.

I made the suggestion that we allow profanity but base it on a moderators discretion. I don't think its a big deal if somebody uses profanity but it shouldnt be used as if your a 7th grader saying the f-word after every other word.

I used an extended ASCII character between color tags. But there are other ways to get around it, like you said. And of course a newbie could figure it out. That's beside the point.

The point is they should just go ahead and remove the filter because it's not going to stop a f‏‏ucking thing.

Arrrghh!!! (not pirate talk, actual frustration.) I posted a long, articulate post about this and then sent it only to get a 404. I was hoping that shit was long gone.

But the crux of the post was thusly: (yes, I said thusly and I meant it!)

In a nutshell, language is all good. communication is all good. Swear words are a form of communication. Forums are a means of communication. If I happen to slip in the "f" word once in a while then that says something about me, and you guys can interpret it however you wish. And if someone like Klitzy never utters a swearword ever, then you might not even notiice, but will still, over time, gain a "feel" about his personality. Not necessarily better, just different. That's what we all are. Different. Otherwise we would just sit in a corner muttering to ourselves instead of reaching out to others: in a forum, at a bar, at a dinner party, with our friend, our families...

But if I use the "f" word here it can mean several things: anger, (I'm "f"ing "P"ed off") insulting: (He's a "f"head) humor: (There once was a man from Nantucket...), Sex: (first we made love, and then we "f"ed like bunnies")

It's all about context. And the context of Rev3 is adults, and/or mature younger folks, interested in technology with a real-world, wise-ass slant. And it's not like little asterisk stars are going to mask anything. When you are reading a forum, or the written word in general, the little shapes that form words in our heads are easily substituted with the real word anyway. Filters protect us from nothing and just get in the ****ing way. (edit: I wonder what those four stars signify?)

If this was the "Koolaid for Kids" forum, or the "Purple Happy Dinosaur" forum, then things would be different...

But this is the "Diggnation talks about the best ways to give women an orgasm" forum, and the geekdrome "swears like a sailor" forum, and TheBroken "pretends to smoke pot" forum...

The old forums had no such limitations, and worked well. We used curse words sparingly and for appropriate effect. That might change with the new influx of users here now, but give us the benefit of the doubt, and, like several have said before me, it's easy to get around. And with tech nerds, such as the core audience here is, they will get around it. All you are doing, like DRM, is making it more dificult for the honest people.

If your going through that much trouble just to swear on the forums then I would suggest growing up a bit.

Im thinking we will remove the filters though.

It seems to me the core of any profanity filter would be George Carlin's seven dirty words...

I thought Rev3 slogan was "kill your TV", not "be just like tv, except on the web."

Nice point. There aren't any rules for web shows yet so....

And I hope there never will be. In fact, can there be?

If I make a video of my rude friends making beer and post it on my website, who is to censor it? The FCC? Nope, they can only regulate the public airwaves. My Website Hosting Service? Yep. They can make any rules they want and I agree to it. But I can go elsewhere, to a host with rules more conducive to my needs. The Govt? Maybe. But they can only pass rules like that if they use the "protecting the children" meme, and they are so, so, so awesomely good at that these days...
