Beta Test A New Trick

Okay, guys. I've been working like crazy for the last 2 weeks on this insane trick. It will eventually become a scam school episode, but for now, I'm going to explain how it all works and ask you guys to beta test it for me.

EFFECT:
Using mind control, you plant a particular card into someone's mind, without their knowledge or consent.

HOW IT PLAYS:
Ask your friend if he believes in mind control. Tell him you didn't either, but you just saw this interview with a guy who swears not only that it's possible, but that he has achieved 100% success with it. Ask your friend to participate in an experiment:

To begin, ask your friend to breathe deeply, clear his mind, and close his eyes. Explain that you're going to quote some old poetry, but that he must try to keep his mind clear, and keep from reacting. As he waits, quote these lines from Robert Frost:

The woods are lovely, dark and deep.
But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep.

After finishing, ask them to think of any card in the entire deck of playing cards. Once they've chosen, ask if they're certain. Give them a chance to change their mind as often as they like. Once they've made it clear that they've made their final decision... start freaking out. Act like you couldn't believe that of all the cards in the deck that was the one they picked.

When they start to ask why you're freaking out, explain: "That was exactly what the guy SAID would happen! it's freaking mind control! I can't explain it."

"Here... go to youtube. Find the interview... The guys name was 'Professor Alfred Doubleday.' Look it up"

Sure enough, your victim will find that there's only one interview with the man. And when he plays the clip, he's shocked to hear the professor explain that after reading those lines of poetry, 100% of the time, test subjects thought of the very card he selected. If he didn't believe in mind control before, he does now.

THE WORK:
There's no mind control here (but your victim will swear there was). Instead, I've just spent the last 3 weeks, creating 104 different versions of an interview with a man who goes by 52 different names. In each of the 52 versions of the interview, he claims that a different card will be the inevitable choice.

By listening to the card chosen by your mark, you'll know which interview to point him towards. This will prove to him that you knew what the card was going to be from the start!

HOW TO MEMORIZE THE SYSTEM:
There are four suits of cards in a deck of playing cards:

Diamonds, Spades, Clubs, Hearts

...so the suit will determine the TITLE of the expert being interviewed:

Diamonds=Doctor
sPades=Professor
Clubs=Coach
heaRts=Reverend

Once we have a suit, we need to get the number. We'll start with the numbers 1 through 5:

1, 2, 3, 4, 5 correspond nicely with the letters A, B, C, D, E... so we'll correspond these numbers with these names:

1 = A = Alfred
2 = B = Byron
3 = C = Charles
4 = D = David
5 = E = Edgar

Now, there are 13 numbered cards per suit. Let's say we split them into three groups:

group 1 = numbers 1-5
group 2 = numbers 6-10
group 3 = numbers 11-13 (jack thru king)

We can correspond each group to the last name of the expert:

group 1 = numbers 1-5 = last name "Singleton"
group 2 = numbers 6-10 = last name "Doubleday"
group 3 = numbers 11-13 = last name "Triplett"

We now have a simple, direct method to translate any card in the deck to the name of our mysterious expert.

SOME EXAMPLES:

Let's say someone picks the 3 of diamonds.

Since it's a Diamond, we know he'll be a "Doctor." (Diamonds=Doctor)

It's the third number in the first group: number = 3, group = 1

Therefore, number=3 means his first name is "Charles," and group=1 means his last name is "Singleton"

... and thus, the "three of diamonds" becomes "Doctor Charles Singleton"

search for "Doctor Charles Singleton," and you'll find an interview of him claiming that 100% of test subjects thought of the three of diamonds.

NEXT EXAMPLE:

Let's take the seven of spades:

sPades means he's a "professor."
seven is the second (#2) number in the second (#2) group.

... so we're looking for "Professor Byron Doubleday"

How about the jack of hearts?

Hearts means he's a Reverend
jack is the first card in the third group
... so we're looking for "Reverend Alfred Triplett"

Good observation! Long term, we can look at fixing that... for now, I'll just be happy if youtube will index all the search terms for the videos!

By the way, I suspect you guys will have better success performing this trick than I will. Since I'm the one in the video, people always suspect the video of being rigged in some way. Since you guys are referring to some disinterested 3rd party, I'm hoping it will lend legitimacy to the effect.

Oh, and also: those of you trying this trick over instant messenger: POST YOUR TRANSCRIPTS OF IT! We'll break apart the performance and figure out what works.

lol very cool idea.
problem is, if you're with a group of people, you can only do this trick once, one on one.. otherwise you'll have people picking a ton of different cards...

or you cant scam someone, impress them, then have them say "ok! now do so-and-so!" - the illusion will be lost when the original person finds out a different card was picked. Another element needs to be placed in this trick to make it so that the trick seems to come from a power of the 'tricker'.


that said, i did this over MSN to my girlfriend. the very next message she guessed that there were 52 videos made - but not everyone will be as quick as her in coming to that conclusion i'd assume =P

Also, I think Smokin's on to something with his performance style: I think it plays really strong if you act as though you're just as amazed as the other person. Not like a "I'm pulling one over on you" kind of way at all.

The beauty of this trick is when the person you just pulled it over on, attempts it on someone else. And the video they just viewed is totally different from the card the new target guesses. Oh, I see so much potential in this.

At the end of the performance, you HAVE to convince the target you just rolled, to do it to someone else. That would be hysterical.

That's assuming you don't tell them how the the trick is REALLY done.



Brian, if this does end up on Scam School, you need to have Johnny Zavant approach people, because you're right. If they see you in the video, they're gonna think something is fishy. Make him wear a hat too, cus both your hairdos are crazy, and they'll know you're linked just by the massive amounts of hair product you both use.

Yeah, that's another tough thing about doing magic: People will say they want to see something, then heckle you all the way through the performance. It drives me nuts.

I don't know how to gauge interest through IM, but in real life I'm very careful not to start performing until I'm certain they're interested and properly focused.

I think the best way to deal with it when somebody tries it and fails is to say that they are unique or, as I put it, some sort of anomaly. It's a pretty fun trick, though. I don't have it all memorized so I haven't tried it on anybody IRL yet, but it's awesome in chats.

Would the forum address be easily ID'ed by the title i.e. Revision3.com/forum/scamschool/alwaysJOS for Jack of Spades and always2oh for 2 of hearts? I bet it would be great if we could easily remember the forum title just like we did (were supposed to) with the Professor/Doctor stuff. This way we could be out somewhere and as long as it was near an internet connection/ computer we could pull the scam by just knowing the start of the forum post and the card picked.

You could actually make this a serious mind-fuck if the comments are all around the card they picked like "Holy Shit, How Come Its Jack of Spades EVERYTIME!!"

"As it stands now," IM works best, because I pull up the page where you have the links and just find the card link and paste it in when they pick their card.

The problem is that I have to do math in my head otherwise and that slows down the gag (um, 10 of diamonds is Doctor for diamonds, and the 10 is the second ...wait, what was the 10 again..)

For someone performing MAGIC this is a necessary evil and they should spend the time memorizing and practicing. But for someone showing off what is SUPPOSED to be a mind game, this should be something that should be easily passed on from person to person.

If you made the identification of the link easy enough to remember, then it can be passed on from person to person very easily. As your Attorney (not really, everyone) I advise you to set up this gag not as a magic trick (where only you have the power) but as an internet game people can play as long as they can easily remember a formula for where the link is.

Just think of the viral possibilities! Imagine a 12 year old doing this and make it easy enough for them. Plus, it's great publicity for your site. Much like the iTunes scam, this would bring in more traffic (as the link is right in the video).

when you get results like that, your audience is telling you something. In this case, it tells you that you need to make absolutely sure they think of a card after they read the poem. An easy way to deal with this is to show them the poem, ask them to think of a card, then tell them to change their mind, to make sure they get a truly "random" guess.

I've done the trick in person for a few years now. The best way I find to do it is to find someone you can trust and let them know to expect a phone call from you. Now with a phone call there are two ways you can do it. One is easier to figure out, the other a little more difficult.

The easier way is to have 13 names and 4 greets... aka if its a Ace is A, 2 is B, 3 is C and you call your friend Alfred, Burt, Chester etc. You great them in one of for ways just arbitrarily chosen between the two of you "Hey" = Hearts, "Yo" = Spades, "Hello" = Diamonds and "Hi" = Clubs... something like that. The only problem is that people will realize if you do it back to back, so its a once per night trick if you do it this way. So they'd pick the card, tell you it, you call the number and say "Hey Frank" and the person on the other line would know its a 6 of Hearts.

The other way that I have done it which is less obvious and harder to get caught at (and you can prove one number without change, and no worry of names) is to have the other person have an idea that you are going to call them in about 2 minutes. Text them before hand or something. From there you give them a call. They pick up the phone and begin counting. Ace, 2, 3, 4, etc. When you hear the correct number you say "Hello?", that signals them with the correct number. Then they will say "Spades, Hearts, Diamonds, Clubs" and when you hear the correct suit you say "Hold on one second". This method takes a lot of practice to get the timing down, especially if they are counting fast on the other line (which is necessary for people to not get suspicious). If you get it down it works like a charm. And if you want to make sure they can say it as you are saying "Hold on one second" and if they say it wrong "accidentally" hit a number as you pass it which will give them a tone to hang up and apparently the "call was dropped" so you can try again.

The first method is great for beginners but if you have the time and a person willing to help you out who can keep a secret and who is available, the second is a better trick. It can be picked up on eventually, but only if you do it too much. There are only so many ways it can be done without it being magic so they might just end up guessing it. But its worth a shot.

I guess Youtube Videos would work, but I'm guessing most people I know would pick up on it.

I posted a seperate thread about this. A way to get around the whole "related Vids" on Youtube would be to make all the tags on the vid unrelated. Remove any refs to "Professor" "Alfred" "Doubleday", etc. That way, when you load the video the risk of seeing the related video is reduced. Since you don't see the tags unless you click "read more", the chances of the person seeing what the tags are is almost nil.

I pulled this one on a friend tonight during dinner. She was playing with her new 3G iPhone, so it seemed like a perfect opportunity. I told her that I had seen a video on YouTube that said people could be mind controlled to think of a certain card after hearing 3 lines of poetry. I recited the lines and asked her to pick a card.

"Like a tarot card?"
"No, a normal playing card."
"Ace of spades."

I've done this trick to four people now. She's the second (in a row) to pick the ace of spades.

"Oh my god! That's what he said you would pick! What was his name...uh...Professor Albert Singleton, yeah! Use your phone to find the video on YouTube. Search for his name. Professor Albert Singleton."
She starts searching for "Albert Singleton".
"No, put 'Professor' since there may be more than one guy with that name."
Bishop Albert Singleton comes back as one of the results. (WTF?)
I re-enter the search with Professor and hand the phone back.

Of course, she is amazed by this. :)

I also played Nim and the 6 matches, 4 triangles puzzle. Of course, I showed her how the tricks were done. (Gotta win points, not drinks.) I also locked her thumbs to the table. I have noticed on problem though. Besides when he says the card, it sounds kind'a obvious since the camera angle changes, and he starts talking clearly and a little slower. You should have just had him say it normal, to you. Would have probably made the effect less obvious.

Anyways, the problem I ran into was that, in the related searches, you see all of the other videos. You may want to add more tabs to them, but make them different so it points out different videos in the related searches.

It would kind'a ruin everything if they clicked a related search and saw the same interview with a different card.

Someone should try getting a reaction video of someone they pulled the trick on. I was going to try doing a video chat to see how the people reacted but I'm worried my lack of acting skill might give it away.

I've been pulling this trick on quite a few people live (with the help of my iPhone's YouTube function). Only had one screw up so far (picked the wrong video), but the rest of the people I've tried it on (about 9 or 10) have fallen for it. One person completely freaked out. Brian, you are the master. Scary thing is, I managed to pull this trick on one person twice in a row (she isn't very smart). She picked a card, I showed her the video, read the poem again, got her to pick another card and showed her the video for that card and she just stood there and said "what the hell?" You have no bloody idea how hard it was to tell her that it was a scam.

I've noticed that a lit of people pick an ace or the queen of hearts, so lately I've been making it a point to say something like "now after you hear this poem, a bunch of cards are going to cone in and out of your mind... After a whole though, one of them will just feel right to you... That's the card I want you to pick."

That way, you decrease the chances of them picking an obvious card, while also giving them the extra experience of having chosen the right magic card at the last minute.

So I learned my lesson:
a) Do this trick live, it gives them a lot less time to click away at the related vids with you watching over their shoulder. It also makes it a lot easier to show that you are freaked out and set the right mood. People are naturally skeptical of stuff sent over the internet (and you should be), but if you just bring it up casually in a conversation that you saw something so crazy the other day it is a lot more natural.
Plus you get to see the reaction, and that is always the best part.
b) If you do the trick via IM, hotlink it. People will just type in part of the name thinking it won't matter. I tried to avoid this by putting it in quotes, since it was such an odd name I would have thought he would've just copied and pasted it. What really amazes me is that he saw the vid for the ace of hearts. This is "Reverend Alfred Singleton" not a single name matches. How did he even find that one from Coach Byron Doubleday? My guess is that he typed in "Coach Byron Doubleday" then had problems getting the video to load, so he watched the first related link thinking it was the same interview.


Thanks so much for this trick. I hope it never gets featured on scam school so that it doesn't get spoiled by everyone knowing how it works. A scam this good could get around the internet fast.

What really got me at first was that coincidentally, I managed to come up with "Queen of Hearts" when I watched the episode - and of course, the first person also came up with that. Freaked me out a little until I saw the next person hehe. It's great having too much time on your hands :)

What's the policy on thread necromancy around here?

Anyway, anyone found a way to take out the suggestions yet?
I know there are Firefox extensions that let you tweak youtube, and one option to tweak is to hide suggestions, but unless you are using your own computer that won't work.
I showed this to my neighbor who was on my network, so I was able to used ettercap to take it out, but I don't think it would have worked otherwise.
Even freakier? My friend tried it on a friend of hers and actually chose the same card, not knowing it was a trick, so out of luck and some technological ingenuity I really sold it, but I'll be surprised if it works on many other people(the suggested videos sort of pop out when there are repeated thumbnails like that).

Oh, right, what I have been doing is for other people is, I got a free "site" from google pages(pages.google.com although I believe they are transitioning to sites.google.com) and just embedded the video into the page once my friend tells me the card over an IM, and send them my page(I left it in my name, but I can probably make something like "SubliminalSuggestions.googlepages.com" and really sell it. I just have an index of all the pages I already made(only a couple, since it got kind of tedius and people figured it out fast after the end of the video). I figure I can even make a grid with actual pictures of the cards to get things going faster, but I'm not really the best at this stuff. Maybe a forum member can do us all a big favour?

Last time I checked, you could avoid the selections by searching video.google.com instead of youtube. does that still work?
