Well my phone broke the other day so I MUST get the new iPhone :D

If Kevin is correct about the $200 price tag then thats quite an affordable iPod/Phone etc. :)

Apple have just announced a new student promotion - but a computer, get a free iPod nano or touch (rebate up to $299). If thats an incentive, go for it.

Tech is constantly updating.

There is the WWDC next week where an announcement might be made about new products (possibly larger capacity iPod touch, new iPhone announcement almost guaranteed). If neither of those interest you, then the iPod classic (greater capacity) or iPod nano (smaller size) are current models, and unlikely to be replaced soon.

Every year, Back-to-School Promo means new iPods are coming.
Apple updates its iPod (and now also iPhone) line every year, there's always something better coming up next. If you really want to know when to buy, don't buy right before January (MacWorld); June (WWDC); September/October (after Back-to-School Promo, they used to have a special event to introduce new iPod, that's what happened before they introduced iPhone)

p.s. What I mentioned above is a whole new revision (new function, case redesign) which doesn't include increase in capacity (they may introduce old model with larger capacity anytime)

Just wait for their major events, which is usually WWDC and MacWorld(s).

Other than that, it's a crapshoot.

This happens in every area of tech. I can't think of any product that you can buy today and not have it basically obsolete or outdated in only a few months' time...

You could spend your whole life waiting...

I too have felt burned buy Apple tech updates/price drops, etc...very shortly after purchasing an Apple product. Doesn't mean I don't/haven't enjoyed my Apple products. What I do now; if I'm looking at purchasing something from Apple; I check macrumors buyer's guide section to get an idea of where that product is in its lifecycle. Linky follows:

I have an 80 gig ipod. It's nice but if I could do it again I'd get a Zune. I hear they have some cool features that my Ipod doesn't have.

I really enjoyed my iPod and I'll keep it around, but I'm highly considering getting a Zune. I like the idea of the Zune cards or what not. Price of a CD for unlimited music. I'm hoping Apple comes up with a way to compete. I've owned two iPods in the last 3 years. Going from 3rd Gen to video. I'd keep an eye out about announcements of new versions, but I think with 30 gig at lower point for $249 its a good deal.

I'll keep my iPhone that's pretty much replaced my iPod except for very long trips, working out, and mowing lawns. I got spoiled by the iPhone video display and now can't really watch much on it. If I buy another iPod may be a Nano or Shuffle because I don't want to worry about a $250 mp3 player while I'm running or something.

Kind of wanted to put my perspective on the iPod and what I'm thinking about for my next purchase.

The way Alex talks about that Zune-Pass, I just don't know. I love the living hell out of my iPod Touch, but all of that music...boy it would be nice. The Zunes have come a LONG way since their initial release, but overall I'd say get yourself a new Touch when they release. They are just great for video (if that is your thing).

Agree. Well mainly cause I love my iPhone for video and it's pretty much the same thing. Minus the phone part.

I was really considering buying a video iPod. I was checking out the prices back in December, and they cost quite a lot more than I was expecting. So I went with PSP slim for cheaper, with a game and movie and memory card.

Of course, I didn't so much need a music player as want a gadget. I'm pretty happy with my choice. It won't be replaced by a better model every year... So at least that's good.

I didn't even consider a Zune because I was pretty sure the iPods would work with Linux, and I have no idea about a Microsoft product doing likewise, and didn't care to risk it to find out either. Funny that I didn't even think about that for the PSP, but got lucky that it worked perfectly.

What is cool about the Zune is that, unlike iPod, updates to the interface are given to all models of the Zune, not just the newest ones. I have a first gen zune and Microsoft not only allows but encourages 1st gens upgrade the 2nd gen firmware, so it gets all the new, cool features.

I am no Microsoft fanboy (i run ubuntu) but i would consider not getting an iPod and going with a Zune, listen to Alex, please. I love mine (although it is hard to sync with ubuntu, but it is still possible :) )

I love my ipod touch... but I find the sune community features more compelling. I may get a zune for my day to day media life and an iphone for the features it has.

the zune pass is great except it completely screws the artists. yes, i realize in this current market/society/whatever the artist gets hurt with pretty much any music purchase at all. i just can't see where anyone but ms/labels get any worthwhile amount of money. according to the zune.net website, there are millions of songs. quick math ($15.99 divided by 2 million [conservative estimate]) means that the $15.99 zune pass, is .00079 cents per song. i'd imagine the artist sees .00001 or .00005 cents per song. that's a lot of songs/people to even make $1.

zune pass: great for you, sucks for artists.

But you can't forget to mention that, when you stop paying the monthly price then you lose access to the downloaded songs. Thus, each month the cost per song goes up, plus no one downloads every song, so now you are talking BIG BUCKS :p

But i buy from Amazon, if at all :)
