View Full Version : Good Anime Movies?

Saw Vexille. Loved Vexille. Was wondering: are there other "Vexilles"?

Any other good, action-oriented animes out there a fellow like myself would enjoy?

I have borrowed the first and second Appleseed from a friend, as well as the first Karas movie. Saw clips of Steamboy on my Netflix account, and I'll watch that online sooner or later. Anything else I'm missing?

No list is too long, and if you want to throw in a youtube trailer, I'd be much obliged.

I'd recommend the series before the movie, but "Cowboy Bebop" is a pretty good anime in the 'action' vein.

Most of the other action series I'd recommend (Full Metal Panic!, Dai-Guard, etc.) have more of a comedic bend to them.

I liked Origin. People turn into trees.

Paprika is awesome. Life's a dream.

If you like Steamboy there are some similarly styled movies from Studio Ghibli that are worth checking out. Nausicaa of the Valley of the Winds, Princess Monanoke, Spirited Away, and Howl's Moving Castle.

If you like to use your brain during your action movie, any of the Ghost in the Shell movies might be up your alley.

Anime News Network is a good place for a large supply of reviews. Mostly from the long time Anime fan perspective, but it should let you winnow out the chaff.

if you can find it, watch a movie called Dead Leaves. Its very stylized, and an amazing action filled movie. I loved it, maybe my favorite anime movie period.

Cowboy Bebop the movie.(just owns everything)
Ghost in the Shell (first movie though the series kicks the films ass)

And good choice with Appleseed.

Full Metal Alchemist movie (though best watch the series first)

I'd personally check out some anime series before movies based on shows. I've heard and seen that some movies based on shows try to sum up the entire series in two hours. My favorite series and movie is Full Metal Alchemist.

agreed on all 4.

The Ghost in the Shell movies are pretty good, though if you haven't seen any of the series, you'll probably have a bunch of "WTF?" moments.

quite a alot of good one and some of the best where already mentioned.

one 3 part movie or mini series I really enjoyed back when it came out was cybercity oedo 808. for sure go through all those mentioned. I never got into full metal, but hey... a very good series next to cowboy bebop is trigun! amazingly fun and very cool made!
a bit stranger and more in the horror genre are urotsukidoji movies (hope I wrote that correctly), monster city was very fine.

And I am not very sure, but I think everyone forgot Akira, or I just missed it, but you have to watch akira!!! with ghost in the shell the two must see animes.

have fun!

I'm supprised no one has mentioned Akira.

Also I wouldn't call Hayao Miyazaki's films "action-oriented" though they are great flims.

Akira is an amazing film, but an action anime it ain't! This along with Ghost in the Shell are two of my favorites, but these are ones that usually cause people to come back with an "i don't get it" or a "that was boring" after I recommend them.

Hardly anyone comes back complaining after a Miyazaki film.

yeah, but even those not understanding it the first time should watch it... thinking somewhat a good activity from time to time :-D and both those movies deliver some good action.

I a fan of confusing stuff, too. makes ya think. I asume you have seen Serial Experiments: Lain. If not, you might like it.(though it is clearly sans-action)

If your looking for series and not movies maybe try Neon Genisis Evangalion or Gantz.
There are also Evangelion movies that i hear are good, but haven't seen myself.
I also enjoyed the Esca Flowne series and movies. (i'm kinda a giant robot fan, cept i never got into the gundam)

I am almost done with the series Gantz and it took an awesome turn towards the end I'm digging.

I have a copy of the EscaFlowne series, but can't seem to get into it. Giant robots aren't my favorite type of Animes. I did hear Evangelion is a good one though.

I'm more of a fan of more supernatural shows, so looking to finish With Hunter Robin and Crono Crusade (not related to the games).

So I forgot I created this thread awhile back mainly for this purpose. A lot of threads get repeated a lot, and thought maybe one main thread would direct things more. Another common thread I see started is new to comics and there's a recent one with a lot of info too.

Thanks everybody. I saw some trailers I dug, especially the one for
Nausicaä! That's getting Netflixed post haste.

I'll check out the Miyazaki (sp?) movies, but I was looking for stuff like Vexille. Basically action movies that just happen to be anime.

Don't know how I missed it till now, but big action scenes and great music. Plot that takes a few times to view to... well really I guess that doesn't matter much either. Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children I would highly consider a CG anime, and some of the fights in it are epic.

Most of the great anime movies have already being recommended although this one is missing: Wonderful days. I don't thinks this movie is Japanese, Korean maybe? anyway its really really good, it gives a nice spin to the contamination issue :) nice CG and drawing combination.

Also there this movie from the same guys of Paprika called Boys of the street or something like that, there's a preview in the Paprika Dvd. Oh also from the same studio Tokio Godfathers and Perfect Blue. I haven't actually seen Tokio Godfather though.

Perfect Blue is a good thriller. If you want to see some anime drama try The grave of the butterflies from bandai o gibli, not sure. also Totoro (Gibli/Miyasaky??)has not been mentioned here.

Felipe

Oh I forgot to mention, if you liked robotech you have to see the Macross Movie, the Macros Plus series, and Macross Zero which have beautiful CG. I think there is a new macross series but I don't remember its name.

I don't deny that. Just the fights were pretty awesome. Actually one of my favorites was the Tifa fight.

I'll second Steamboy and Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust.

Also, anything hentai. You won't be dissapointed. Although you probably will be horrified.

FFAC yes has amazing CG but face it the film just sucked.I...*love*...FF7AC.

But then, I fully admit the plot is stupid. And when I watch it, I start watching in the middle(from Reno and Rude arriving in the city square). As the second half of the movie is essentially one continuous action sequence.

And on that level, as an hour long action sequence, it kicks some serious ass.

some guy at work just let me borrow Read Or Die... after i told him i liked Avatar and the Princess Mononokkne.... w/e [that Hayo Mazaokizki... created] (sorry about the spelling) because i just loved those films...

but i've yet to watch it. I guess it's about paper and fighting........?

tyashki
06-04-2008, 12:01 PM
If you mean the Read Or Die single disk OVA, its a must watch.

I mean, the premise of a girl who works for the Library Special Forces who can wield paper in any form (like riding a giant paper airplane or wielding a sword made of money) is pure gold.

For a good anime movie, I would suggest Keiji Nakazawa’s 1983 "Barefoot Gen". It's not actually an action anime, probably more of a historical drama. It's a semi-autobiographical account of the writer's survival through the bombing of Hiroshima. He was six years old at the time and the movie retells what he had to go through. It's pretty sad and emotional, but has an important message. I recommend everyone watch it if they can. However, be warned it's pretty graphic some times.

Well I kinda broke the rule too, but the original poster was asking for action movies. That's probably why no one's mentioned it. :p

If you're into sci-fi then watch anything & everything by Shirow Masamune. Starting with the Ghost in the Shell Movies, there are 3 of them. Then it's onto Apple Seed.

If you don't know who Shirow Masamune is then the short way of explaining is that he's the guy the Wachowski brothers ripped off, a lot.

Ghost in the Shell "Solid State Society," the name varies depending on if you're in the US, UK, or Japan.

My recommendations are (these are fairly new releases):

Sword of the Stranger (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ivRE0DL9J6Q) and Girl Who Leapt Through Time (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xk9SAmD00Iw). Former is a period samurai/martial arts piece while the latter is a modern sci-fi story. Best I've seen in the past few months.

I hate when people do that.

The third movie has nothing to do with the first two, its an extension of the TV show. You are just confusing people, and also ruining the plot for two whole seasons of one of the best shows ever made (Solid State Society takes place in the Stand Alone Complex timeline, after the first two seasons and has nothing to do with the other two movies).
