So, I figured with some of the awesome MMA talk here recently in this snowstorm of high profile MMA events we could talk about the upcoming UFC show, 85 (or "Bedlam")...
Which fights are you (extra) excited about? Personally I'm excited to see Matt Hughes (whom I've actually disliked and still dislike personality-wise, but have been aching to see fight again since his fight against GSP.) fight again because he's just usually a refreshing breeze in comparison to the wrestlers who don't actually do much with their talent and eventual positions in the matches.
I was devastated when Alves demolished Parisyan (after getting over the fact that one of my favorites (Parisyan) was relegated to Fight Night events) and since then I've a heightened interest in him. I hope to see both Hughes and Alves making this an explosive and awesome fight, so they both get a boost in their careers (though I'm not sure Alves really needs one. Hughes needs an exciting fight to solidify his staying, in my opinion.).
I'm always open to some Bisping, and I hope he's on his way back from overhype hell. I've never seen this Jason Day character, but I hope he's not just someone they threw in there to make UK fans happy.
Vera vs Werdum is a fight where I can't really say I have a favorite. I like both fighters (especially since Werdum's win against Gonzaga) and I hope this will be somewhat of a win for both of them.
Good/bad card; what do you think?

The thing is, Does Hughes care about staying ? He's mentioned retiring for 3-4 years now.

I've long stopped letting my excitement get out of control, prior to an event. Boring looking cards can be great, and vice-versa.

I hope Jason Day wins. Other than that, I hope Hughes wins, even though I didn't think he said 3-4 years, I thought it was 3-4 fights? Either way, I think he's not even going to attempt another run with the belt, and he doesn't really need to.
I kinda wanna see Vera win, as I like him a lot, but if he loses this one, I hope he drops... He seems to not want to have to cut any weight, and that's why he's sticking around in heavyweight. But whatever, either guy could win this one, and it should be good.
I really dislike Bisping. I don't think he should have won that fight vs Hamill, and I think that was worse favortism than the latest Kimbo fight, to be honest. And then he ran his mouth off about how he beat down Matt, when he was the one getting beat.
And I concur with the weak-looking cards can often surprise, and therefore it really doesn't matter. In fact, the big name fights often let down more due solely to the big names. Some of the best I've seen were before I became familiar with the IFL and WEC guys

None of the fights on this card catch my attention besides the main event. It's as if they purposely created match-ups that will inevitably be boring as hell.
For those who haven't seen it, the recent WEC event was great (minus the first fight, which should be skipped entirely).

I'd have to say I'm pretty excited to see Hughes fight and Vera fight. Seems like it's been awhile since I've seen Vera fight and I'd like to get a better feel for him. I'm nervous for the Hughes fight. I think it will be good fight, but I'd hate to see Hughes go out on a loosing streak, if he retires in the next fight or so. However, I would like to see him finally get a crack at Serra.
How I really feel....just plain excited for all the fights being aired lately that I'm getting to watch. :D And that I'm becoming more "educated" through good people like you guys!

Yes. A hundred times - yes. I really enjoy Hamill's fights and couldn't believe that decision. Beyond that, Bisping seems like a pretty big dickhead, so hopefully Day can expose some of his weaknesses.

I'd love to disagree, but I can't. Sad thing is that McCullough made $32,000 for that fight. In just two fights, he's gone from someone I enjoyed watching to a guy who looks like he has no confidence and is fighting to not lose.
Other than that, I'm looking forward to seeing a few lesser known fighters get the chance to shine. It's just too bad that "The Manic Hispanic" won't get to fight on the main card. Oh well.
Prediction-wise, I'll go Alves-Day-Davis-Werdum-Marquardt.
dolson
06-04-2008, 03:48 AM
Heheh, I always do the prediction stuff on MMA Tracker, but instead of playing it smart, looking at the actual fighters and their histories and whatnot, I just vote on the underdogs so that if I win, I get big upload credits.. But lately it has been backfiring. I know for a while there, I think around the time Franklin lost to Silva the first time, it seemed like underdogs were winning a lot of fights, and so I kinda stuck with it.
So, my predictions there are different than my real-life predictions:
Hughes-Day-Davis-Vera-Leites
w/ Kampmann-Tavares-Burns-Lambert-Taylor-Sanchez
I'm more confident about the main card choices, and I'm kinda unsure about a couple of the undercard, but those are my predictions..

When Bisping was on the Ultimate Fighter I was pulling for him..but since the Bisping/Hamill fight I've been hoping he loses every fight. Is that wrong? The Elite XC fight that was on CBS the other night was kinda sad. The only really good fights were the Gina Carano-Kaitlin Young fight and the Robbie Lawler-Scott Smith fight...which had a stupid no contest. The Kimbo fight was VERY laughable. If I could sum up James Thompson with two words it would be "Glass Jaw". Aside from the 20 minutes in between the fights, the only good thing that came out of it was that I could watch it for free and got it on CBS HD, had this been PPV they would have made maybe $100. But that's just one opinion.

Regarding Bisping and his win against Hamill I agree it was BS and Hamill should've won it. As for Bisping in general, I think he was lulled into believing he was the world's best by the treatment he got from the UFC because they wanted to build a UK superstar.
I think everything that's happened is unfortunate, because some fights it's seemed like Bisping has been slacking during training or not taken the fights as seriously as he needs to. Needless to say, it's summoned an unnecessary attitude in him too, which is sad because he seemed like a cool guy right out of TUF.
I don't know where I should be thinking Bisping is at right now, because the McCarthy fight really wasn't an indicator of much, except possibly how many knees he can throw in rapid succession. Even so, I hope it gives him real confidence instead of the fake stuff the UFC has put in him by overhyping him.
dolson
06-04-2008, 01:49 PM
I want to see Bisping's attitude before the fight with Jason Day. I hope it's like Keith Jardine's before his Houston Alexander fight.
And the same end result would be awesome. LOL
Someone's got to knock him down a few pegs before he can climb back up on his own, without Dana White's help, I think.

Just saw that Alves didn't make weight for the fight, so they're fighting at a catchweight of 174.
Kinda disappointing for a guy who could be on the fast track to stardom if he were to get a win over Hughes. I realize it's not as cut and dry as him not trying hard enough, but for the biggest fight of his career? Most guys who were given his opportunity would do every last thing they could to make weight.
Could definitely delay his chances for a title fight for a while.

Im most excited about the Swick-Davis fight I think it has potential to be explosive. The main event could go either way, I can see Matt laying on Alves for 15 minutes. Althought I can see merit to the boring fights argument, I think that the main card provides many competitive bouts.

It's too bad he didn't make weight, but it's good that Matt agreed to still take the fight.
Also, I think it was Travis Lutter who had a title shot vs Anderson Silva and blew it by not making weight, so this kinda thing has happened before.. I know it's not a simple thing either, but really, these guys do this for a living, and they know they need to make weight, so it's a little puzzling.
Ah well, it should be good anyhow.

Joe Riggs did it to Hughes before as well. It was for a title shot so they made it a reg fight when he didn't make weight, I'm glad cus Riggs didn't deserve the shot in the first place.

Wow, I didn't fare so well with my predictions, did I? lol
Well, overall, I just wasn't into the event until the fight with Tavares... I don't know why, maybe it was just because the guys I wanted to see win were losing, or whatever... The first match was stupid if you ask me - no way that should have been stopped. He was still defending. I dunno. Maybe I had too much good MMA in the past couple weeks and I'm saturated. That's not very likely, actually, but well, I am really tired.. Blah. Whatever.
Most disappointed that Bisping won. I hate that guy. "I've never had my ass kicked." Except the last time you fought in England, you dumbass.

I think it was a bit early to stop it, but not a big deal. Everybody knows that just covering your face and accepting shots to the head does not fly as intelligent defense. I think the ref should have given him a little more time and done a Herb Dean, give him a good 10 second of yelling, improve your position or I'll stop it. But in the press conference Vera admitted that his plan was to just cover his face and take the shots til the round ended, so I see no controversy in the stoppage.

I've heard the same thing. Luckily Leites didn't seem to be that hurt by it. I was under the assumption that piledrivers weren't allowed in the UFC, either.. but apparently, I was incorrect.
All around, I wasn't too into the event either.. The crowd seemed to be a little indifferent for everything besides the Bisping fight. Like I said, I'm no Bisping fan.. but if he could fight will that intensity and aggression each time out, I'd be willing to readjust my position.
I would've liked the Werdum - Vera fight to go a little longer, if only for it being so close to the end of the round. If it was the middle of a round and Vera was taking the shots like that, I'd be more willing to agree with the stoppage.
And does anyone else feel like they're watching their dad get beat up when you see Matt Hughes get knocked around by GSP and Alves? I'd like to see the Serra fight, but I think Hughes should be done after that. He's had such a great career that I'd like to see him go out on a positive note instead of continuing the downward trend of his last few fights.
Forrest and Rampage next month! Can't wait.

I'm torn in this; on one hand I've actually started to like Hughes more towards the end, so I'd like to see him actually start winning now and on the other I get the feeling that he's just lacking spirit in there nowadays.
Forrest and Rampage next month! Can't wait.
Me neither. Will hopefully be an amazing fight. I hope I'm wrong about Griffin; I'd like to see it end up being a fight where you can't tell who's winning until the last moment. I'm worried Griffin will eat lots of punches, then get taken down when he's his usual "Oh, shit; I just got hit!" self and not be able to retaliate because he's getting demolished on the ground.
Rampage is hardly invincible and he hasn't fought in forever, but I don't even agree with Griffin getting the title shot in the first place. I wish someone else could've gotten it. I don't see how he's actually fought himself up to a title shot. With the possible exception of (dirty cheater) Stephan Bonnar his only win against someone who's supposed to be of top caliber is against Rua and it isn't enough, in my opinion.

I'd tend to agree with you. I like Forrest, but I was a little surprised when I heard he was the number one contender a few months back. But really... who else are you going to give it to? Lyoto Machida has to be a contender in the near future and Wanderlei Silva and Rashad Evans could possibly look at a title shot somewhere soon, but there doesn't seem to be a clear pick to get the shot instead of Griffin.
Liddell and Henderson are both sure rematches in the future, and one could make an argument for Shogun and Thiago Silva further down the line. Other than that... the division is a little slim at the moment. A lot of guys are coming off a few bad losses and/or injuries, so it'll be interesting to see the direction the UFC takes after the Rampage/Forrest fight.

Would a boxer's ability with their arms and hands be enough to beat an MMA fighter or would the boxer just get destroyed the instant grappling commenced?
Heyseuss
06-10-2008, 10:25 PM
I'm actually referring to boxing. Silva said he wanted to box RJJ, and RJJ heard about it and said "hell yeah". RJJ said he'd naturally lose in MMA, but he thinks Anderson would be a great opponent, as he has great hands, and his a tall, lanky southpaw, RJJ's worst nightmare. Dana White poopooed the idea, but both Silva and RJJ want to do it.
And in MMA, a boxer would be destroyed by a lowlevel MMA kid. All anyoe has to do is get inside a boxers range. Since the beginning of MMA, when a boxer gets in the game, they actually lose the stand-up before they lose the ground game. Low leg kicks. Boxers have always been confused and hurt by kicks to their lead leg. Also, knees, if they clinch, they don't understand underhooks and knees or over the top elbows.
Look up Art Jimmison...... or maybe I'll just tell you why he's interesting. He entered an early UFC match, prior to gloveuse, with one boxing glove on.
This reminds me of love of my life, Holly Holm. Now dating Joey Villasenor. She started out as a kickboxer and switched to boxing and is the best 140 pounderish female boxer out there. (she defends her belt in 2 days though). She spars with Jardine, and all the other guys from Greg Jacksons camp than train striking with Mike Winkeljohn. I saw a Duane Ludwig interview at the gym when he was getting ready for a big fight, and HOlly was sparring in the background. Anyhoo

Dana scrambled to get something on free TV opposite of the Affliction PPV. I'm sure he is offering extra compensation for the fighters willing to take these fights on short notice. And I'm sure the fighters have known for at least the past week, but Dana needed time to get an arena, permit, Spike's clearance, etc. It's weird but makes perfect sense.

Oh I knew why he was doing it, I just don't buy it all, just yet, seeing as even well planned events have ahabit of falling apart at the last second. The sad thing is, is dana doesn't realise that a UFC event will have no affect whatsoever on the Affliction event. Hardcore MMA fans will 'obtain' and watch both. Casual fans who didn't know about Affliction, might tune into the UFC event, but only if they didn't know about or weren't going to watch the Afflicition event in the first place. Casual fans will watch whatever they see advertising for first. I wonder how many casual fans who most likely know who Sylvia is, are recognising the importance of a Fedor fight.
I'm sure he is offering extra compensation for the fighters willing to take these fights on short notice.
Dana White ???? The same Dana that paid the undercard fighters 2 and 2 up until a year ago? I think he calls them and tells them the short notice and they go, " awww man dana I need time to train", and he goes, "motherfucker do you want to be a fucking fighter ? "

I hate to say it... wait, no I don't - but dana's accomplishments are far overrated. The overall level of MMA skill has gone way down since the ultimate fighter. UFC has made none to little effort in educating their dumbass fanbase, and they are still patting themselves on the back, meanwhile, all the same old problems are there.
he needs to go bac kto what he was doing before managing tito and chuck -

Wow. I've actually had a crazy conversation with Enson Inoue about yakuza and Pride boss Takada. It was worse than I imagined. Upper management at DreamStage was seriously screwed.... they're the same ppl who organsied the freakshow matches and champions fighting without putting their belt on the line... but still, yes, Pride was better.
Yea. I really liked Takada. He loves what he did so much, and the fighters loved him. It's such a shame. I really miss those quality fights. :(

Dana White is almost a household name, and the only good thing that's done is made "Dana" almost acceptable as a man's name.
Which is great for me, since that's my middle name, which I have gone by since I was a baby.
Take that, all you assholes from high school and elementary school, making fun of me all the time!

Takada was kinda dopey. He was interesting to watch fight, but pro-wrestling was engrained in his head too deeply, and he worked his early pride fights. Not like Rickson wouldn't have beaten him anyway.

True, and Dana Murzyn is/was a hockey player (Calgary Flames at one point). But I tried those arguments and people didn't care.
Stupid assholes from high school and elementary school, making fun of me all the time..
OK, back on topic. MMA rocks!

Regardless of how good they were, fact is it doesn't matter one bit when they don't exist any longer.
Don't get me wrong, though; I liked Pride...
