So I was flipping through the channels waiting for Supernatural to start Thurs night and I come across The Office. I watched it a couple of times and couldn't get into so I don't watch it but I had the girlfriend over and she likes it and told me to tune it in. So we're watching and my jaw hit the ground. Tony Gardner, one of the guys from the office being combined in, is played by Mikey Bruner. He grew up in my town, hung out with my older bro and I've known him for most of my life, drank beers with him over the summer, and it's always awesome to see him on TV. The g/f made fun of me because I was being a total dork about it (note to self find new girlfriend).

So I was curious who's the most famous person you know?

I lived a few houses down from most of the members of The Getup Kids and got to go see them open for Greenday and Weezer back in the day.

Buddy from Charles in Charge also lived in my neighborhood. I didn't know him but I saw him at the grocery store a few times.

I lived down the street from Hacksaw Reynolds (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jack_%22Hacksaw%22_Reynolds) for about 13 years at my family's house in Miami. He was a linebacker for the 49ers and the Rams. He's a big burly guy that loves to do garden work. Him and his wife have two 1970s white Stingray Corvettes, one they use occassionally, the other is literally under a huge pile of random crap in their garage with only the bumper visible.

OJ Simpson moved in a few years ago a few miles up the road from that same house. And just outside my neighborhood Janet Reno has a house behind a funeral home, its really hard to see from the road because of ridiculously thick bushes and trees. During the Elian Gonzalez crisis cops were constantly stationed out front.

Well, if you're going to bring up Elian . . . he lived around the block from me when he was brought up to DC. Those were the days.

For any Disney animation geeks, I worked with Andreas Deja on Bambi 2. Although I didn't directly as I was an effects assistant animator, but he was living in Australia for the time being and I had coffee with him and two other guys.

I also met Glen Keane, Chris Sanders (Created Lilo and Stitch)

Any boxing fans? No? I was commisioned to do a short animation for Kostya Tszyu. His big here in Australia and I believe Russia. He was on Dancing with the stars here and came second. Real nice guy. He's like 7 time feather weight world champion. I dunno much about boxing either, but he's success gets a lot of news here.

No real Hollywood talent. Actually I tutor a kid and his dad used to be on the Ed Sullivan show for 8 years. He also did an episode of Red Dwarf, and like a ton of other stuff :)

I have never met Russel Crowe, or when they were shooting the Matrix, I never saw Keanu Reeves or Larance fishburn, but a lot of people have. I walked past Russel Crowes Sydney appartement though. It's at a stupid place if you don't want to be mobbed.

I hung out with Sean Semmel during a comic convention and he does the voice of Goku! He also voiced some of my TV commercials :)

Uh, I once met Khrystyne Haje (the redhead from The Head of the Class) at a Fangocon. We were there to attend a discussion by Gregory Widen about The Prophecy, which was called God's Army at the time. Oh, and I met Clive Barker at that same con. Oddly enough, I didn't get to meet Gregory Widen.

I know that's not impressive, but for some reason I always thought it was cool to see Haje there... and rarely is there any reason to mention it.

Well I have two aunts that are the only "famous" people I know.

My aunt Linda is a noted fashion designer who lives in Woodland Hills, CA. She's designs for celebrities, Shakira, Gwen Stefani, Jennifer Lopez, Mo'nique, Patti Labelle, N'Sync, Brittney Spears, Janet Jackson, Joan Rivers, etc., etc. Both of her daughters did backup dancing for Vanessa Williams, BBD...I've seen a plenty of New Edition concerts in the first row.

My aunt Victoria, who I'm named after, was a semi-famous singer in Germany (but admittedly it doesn't take much to be a famous singer there). Her claim to fame is singing with Falco on "Rock Me Amadeus"..."Oooh, rock me Amadeus"

That's about as close to famous as I know.

Let's see. Well. I used to be really good friends with Wil Francis from Aiden. We worked at Cingular together and I bounced at his shows. Wait, so you worked for Disney's final hand drawn animation studio?

Yup, my first feature film credit was as a digital ink and paint artist on Jungle Book 2, then I finally got to draw blobs on Lion King 3 (or 1.5 depending on where you bought it), 3 Musketeers, Tarzan 2 and Lilo and Stitch 2. I also worked on Bambi 2, but the bastards didn't credit me :(

I left it though to pursue my own work and I'm just finishing up my short film for my Masters degree in animation.

What pissed me off though was that 2 months after I left they announced they are closing the studio and I missed out on over $10 thousand worth of redundancy money. The gossip of the studio closing down pretty much started when I got there, so I never thought it would really happen especially as they kept doing renovations and buying out floors and other offices while I was there. We were also assured that we all had work till 2010, then they said 2008, but the lease for the building was also for 2008 and I didn't want to wait so long.

When everyone was like "Wow, that's Vince Vaughn!" I said "Oh, you mean the country music singer?" ... oops.

Here goes my name droppings.

My boss is dating Marilu Henner. So I see her on occasion. Been up to their house in Hollywood a couple of times. I think she might actually know my name.

When it comes to bands I can name drop a little better.

When I was a kid the drummer for RATT lived down the street from me. He moved away shortly after "making it". I just remember before he moved there was Ferrari parked out front and gold records hanging in the living room.

SST records Black Flags record label was based out of my hometown Lawndale, CA (the "city" is less than one sq. mile)

I am constantly running into Fletcher from Pennywise.

I've hung out with the guys from Fishbone and the Skeletones on a couple of occasions.

Last but not least I am friends with Mike Clark from Suicidal Tendencies.

oh, have we taken this to the level of brushing with celebrity now?

I have a much bigger range on that one.

Talked to Michael Wincott (of movies such as The Crow, Robin Hood, etc) at a Toronto Film Festival Party
My friend used to date Nicholas Campbell (In the Dead Zone and Force 10 from Navarone) so I hung out with him quite a few times
Had a couple of Beers at a BBQ with the guys from the Cure because one of them was dating a friend.
I saw Army of Darkness with Gedde Lee (The singer from Rush) sitting beside me. He thanked me for not bugging him at the end of the movie. At first I thought it a bit strange, but then I realised he was there with his kids and he just wanted to enjoy the movie as a regular guy. He must get bugged all the time. Toronto is usually really good for people getting their own space. But when it's one of our own, I think maybe all our manners may go out the window
I went to a dinner Party that Sarah McLaughlin was at and I feigned ignorance on who she was so I wouldn't have to talk to her about music. It was great for the first hour, but once she found out that I was in the know she got pissed at me.
Also had drinks with Holy Cole who was dating a good friends brother.

Yeah, I've met a few people by accident and made some cool connections to names some people here consider to be gods, and I've met some by trying to because I thought they were cool. But I just personally can't use name-dropping to up my position. No amount of, "If you don't tell, you're making it up," will get me to either. If only I wasn't to tight on this rule!

And since when have topics had a tendency to stay on topic? *grins*

Celebrities and famous people are no different than anyone else, except that they are usually richer and much better known. I've never really known why people want to meet a celebrity so much. Just to say you met that person?

The point that you seemed to have missed is that some of us in the drome, when people come in here just to increese their post count with useless posts that aren't funny or have anything to do with the topic. Most of the dromers and dromettes are too polite to say anything.

I just want attention, I don't care if it's crime, unnessessary nudity or naming people I met who you might know and have done very well for themselves.

I met Kevin Smith at Chicago con outside the view askew booth. I told him "you're Kevin Smith" to which he replied "yes, I am" Then I asked to take a photo with him, but he was in a rush, but we shook hands. Now because I don't have a photo and I went out of the way to tell you an excuse I could be full of shit, but this was 2000 Chicago con, where he was Wizard Worlds guest of honor, so it's not really far fetched, and who the **** doesn't meet celbrities at these things?

Also because I do the TV commercials for the local comic conventions I get to meet some of the special guests. I met that Bulgarian comic artists who did a run on Dare devil. I think his name is Alex ...something. We had a long discussion about Trabants and other eastern european odities. I also met Mark Waid Drunk :). Francis Manifold or something (Top Cow artist), he's really nice and his girlfriend liked my comics :)

Also my script writing teacher was a guy called David Roach. He wrote ro co-wrote the movie Yahoo serious :) He was the best teacher my uni ever offered :)

Who wants to touch me?

Actually listening to geekdrome JLo's list seems to be more impressive, but he's a bit of a celebrity himself

But this is what I want to know. I get acused of name dropping from time to time by my friends and I want to know what is bad about that? Now, I do agree that it's stupid to tell people who all you know and have met to gain anything from them. But if you are just telling a story about how it was neat to meet someone who is on tv/radio/film then why is that bad? Because people are childish and can't handle not being the one's that had the experiance?

Yes because me dropping Mike's name to start this thread has made my social status rise. I started it to see if anybody else had somebody they grew up with, or were friends with, hit it big. I was grinning like a dumbass when I saw Mikey on TV and told pretty much everybody I knew. Not because I wanted to be popular, I'm never popular and I like it that way, but because it's so kickass.

Drop a name or don't drop a name I don't care but don't act superior, I was gonna say something in my first post about only drop names if you want to but I figured we have intelligent people here and they could figure out for themselves if they don't want to drop a name then they wouldn't post</rant>

If you do it once or twice, then it's cool, but if this happens constantly and your friends either have to hear the same story over and over or you meet sooo many famous people it'll sound like bullshit.

I met people that work at channel 7 and the girl is a lovely person, but I swear the amount of times I hear local celebrities names dropped a normal person would have hated it. I personally don't care, because I know I have a habbit of doing the same thing, right moshi_what?

I also think people who name drop all the time are like the people who have the most exiting weekends that resemble a mission impossible sequal or something.

I also figured this thread is to get that bad habbit out of one's system, so that's my reasoning for posting.

They don't, but it's getting a little tiring seeing people come thread crap just for the sake of it. It's becoming more prevelant. If you don't like a topic or don't see the need for a topic, why try and make others feel inferior for adding to the discussion? If enough people don't like a thread it just naturally drops...can't we let nature take its course.

Yes, celebrities are like everyone else, we get it. But they are the people who bring lots of joy to so many so it's interesting to meet them. I mean I rarely get too excited unless they were childhood crushes...like Dirk Benedict..I almost passed out when I met him. So many sordid fantasies..:D

I have two favorite moments, besides meeting most of the guys from best week ever (not Christian Finnigan yet, but I will meet him eventually!)

First of all, I've made it a point to meet every comedian I see. Jeffrey Ross, Stephen Lynch, Tom Cotter, Pablo Francisco, Mike Birbiglia and Demetri Martin to name a few. I'm a big name dropper, as you can see.

My first favorite moment was when I was in Chelsea. I was walking around and I notice this guy in a green sweatshirt. We make eye contact and he smiles at me, and it was this really cute, shy smile. So I smiled back and we just had a nice little moment where I felt really familiar. Well, after he's already passed it hits me.....it was Mike D of the Beastie Boys. He was in town for some huge ass Jay Z party and WE had a moment. It was awesome.

My ultimate moment to date....I was on the subway studying my opera and I look up and I missed my stop. When I settle back in, ready to get off at the next one, I look across from me and who is sitting there? Ethan ****ing Hawke. Gattaca, Training Day, ****ed up his marriage to one of the hottest women in hollywood Ethan Hawke. My heart just about jumped out of my throat. So I talked to him. I had to. I sat next to him and was like, "I'm really sorry to bother you, but are you who I think you are?" He holds out his hand and is like, "That depends, my name's Ethan. What's your name?" So bam, we shake hands and I just spew out "Reality Bites is one of my favorite movies of all time. The way you did add it up was so ****ing cool." Then he laughed and started asking me all about opera. He's worked with a few opera directors while he did Shakespeare and we just talked shop for about half an hour. I had never been on such a high and it lasted for 3 days.

Growing up in NZ, my only ever claim to fame is/was knowing various international rugby players. Tana Umaga, Pat Lamb, Brian Lima, Michael Jones, and Christian Cullen are proberbly the more prominent "names" I can drop. I come from a prominent rugby family so it was normal to have these huge, burly guys over for BBQs and other get togethers.

For semi-Hollywood names, Keisha Castle-Hughes lived down the road from me. But thats more of a "friend-of-a-friend" deal.

So unless you care about rugby union, my name dropping brings holds very little (if any) weight. Im just part of an awesome family who happen to kick ass at a particular sport :P

I never cared enough to go out of my way to meet someone "famous" so the closest I get is internet famous.
My friend Ray name drops a bit, he likes to make it known he has adam curry, kevin rose, leo laporte, etc phone numbers, and I can understand if he's proud to be on "call for help" or "command n" from time to time. Apparently Kevin was pretty excited to meet him at the toronto meet up.
So I guess Ray is the only name I could drop *shrug*... Back to work for now.

I drove past George Clooney's place in Italy.
Wayne (former World Champion Motorcycle Grand Prix racer) Gardiner's wife used to baby sit my sister.
My father acted with Bryan Brown.
My cousin-by-marriage plays on the Canberra Raiders Rugby League team in Australia.
I once met Dale Chihuly (http://www.chihuly.com/) which is only impressive if you are into art glass.

Nothing exciting I'm afraid. My wife meets the cool people (academics and open mavens) through her academic ties.

It's so funny, I don't know if anyone else listens to Jimmy Pardo's podcast Never Not Funny, but it's just him and his buddies telling stories about being stand up comedians. On one episode Jimmy talked about how he went to this restaurant with his wife and noticed that George Clooney was in the next table over with a young woman. Apparently George wouldn't stfu about himself and just wouldn't let her get a word in edgewise and Jimmy thought it was hilarious that George Clooney sucked at dating. After they finished up, he noticed while he was walking out that the woman had a tape recorder and was taking notes. It wasn't a date....it was an interview.

When I'm old I'm going to retire in New Zealand. It's the most beatiful part in the world. My friend works for Weta, and I visited him while he was working on King Kong, we drove up to lake Tapo because I have never seen a Volcanoe before and I needed to cross that off my list to see. Apparantly the south Island is ten times more beatiful, so that's next for me :) I just been to Wellington and a road trip to Tapo and rotorua.

I'm not much of a Union fan more League Observer, but what's the deal with the Allblacks chocking come World Cup time? Any other time they are unbeatable come world cup time even the long out of form Wallabies beat them.

since two of you might have heard of them, I met Robbie O'Davis, Mario Fenech and Ricky Stewart. I also have a Newcastle Knights jersey signed by the whole team, as my old boss' dad was on the board of directors for that team :)to those that don't know them they are local former Rudby players and Mario is now a TV presenter.

I forgot to mention I met Jason Mewes once. He was working at Jay and Silent Bob's Secret Stash in Westwood (near UCLA). It was a couple months after the store opened. I don't know why, but for some reason I thought it was weird he was working there.

I also have a great Chris Cornell story, but I'll save that for later.

Are you friends with that Travis guy? He was in both the Aquabats and Blink 182, right? Not as much of a fan of Blink, but I still kick myself that I didn't take the chance of seeing the Aquabats live when I had the chance when I lived in the states, and I don't think they have ever played in Australia.

Who cares what they are as long as they rock. If you really want to get hardcore with the labels, they call themselves pop-punk.

You're pretty much saying the equivalent of, "Johnny Cash isn't metal", even though he never said he was to begin with.

And by the way, everything you are talking about does in fact blow.
