A new special, SIX part mini-series from Discovery Channel (also in Disc. HD)
begun this Sunday, June 8th called When We Left Earth. Following America's early experiences with manned space missions -- starting with the Mercury 7 team from Nasa in PART 1: Ordinary Superman.
I just this to be an amazing peace of film while both interesting and entertaining. Much like Planet Earth there is plenty of breath taking film and cinematography yet the film they are working with here is over 45 years old...
(I hope this is not already posted, I was in Colorado Rockies this weekend, but I legally watched it a couple minutes ago when I got home thanks to my handy DVR)

Cool. I love this stuff man. Can't get enough. I turn into a bit of a geek mess with anything space related. I loved the "In the Shadow of The Moon" documentary. And your right, considering some of the source material's age, it still looks spectacular.

So far I've just watched the first two hour episode covering the Mercury and Gemini missions. Holy crap, though, I had no idea exactly what all was going on during those missions. Even though I pretty much knew what happened overall those early missions still had me so nervous! It's amazing to think that people honestly had little idea what was going to happen when humans entered zero gravity in space and that Alan Shepard was willing to strap himself on top of a rocket and get flung into space.
I also had no idea there was so much video footage and hearing all the communications is just awesome. All the ticker tape parades are amazing as well. I'm not convinced that we'll ever see events quite on the scope of those in our lifetime.
Fantastic show. It doesn't have the jaw-dropping beauty of Planet Earth but it's equally as fascinating.
