I'm currently reading Batman: Year One and it's amazing. Frank Miller writing Batman (the perfect combination) and, since it's an update to his origin, you don't need to know any backstory. Highly recommended. :D

I'll just keep posting this link, but its a thread going for awhile for new to comics and comics in general. I'd recommend maybe Avengers & Transformers trade, haven't read it but in the line of 80's toy lines.
Here's the comic thread link:

More details please...
Are you looking to read ongoing things, or do you just want to pick up a collected story from the past?
Do you want a standalone story, or something that will lead you to more things to read?
Do you have any characters you really enjoy?
Superheroes, no superheroes?

You know, i dont know. I love sci fi, but like good sci fi, not just set in the future for the sake of it. How about this, let me list some fav stories/movies/tv shows. Figure this will help you see what i like i guess.
Ender Series of books.
Battle Star Galactica ( over all anyway :p )
Wizards first rule series ( fatasy ala d&d )
dragonlance
harry potter
lord of the rings/hobbit
snow crash
matrix
Goonies
that help at all ?

I'd suggest The All-New Atom or Fear Agent both by Rick Remender for the sci-fi. Any of the Hellboy universe stuff (Hellboy, BPRD, etc.) for fantasy, adventure and Goonies like fun.
Maybe Warren Ellis' Planetary.

OK dude a couple of suggestions. if you like the not so fiction stuff were no one has superman like powers then almost anything frank miller is suggested. personally I love Sin City. I haven't read them in a while but damn they were good.
Batman Hush was really good if your a DC fanboy you'll love it.
I really like the spin off Marvel Zombies. a disease comes to earth that only effects super heroes and within 24 hours the Human population is almost extinct. its a must read.
its a bit old school but I liked Superman Red Son. its about what would happen if superman landed in russia instead of the USA. were else are you going to see a fat old wonder women.
My all time favorite is the Spawn series. I love the artwork. and the story's are awesome. to start off You should read the spinoff Sam and Twitch, case files. then there is a sort of spinoff of a spinoff about a chik who was in a car accident, the ambulance came but instead of taking her to the hospital they stopped behind an ally and raped her. she died then came back from the dead for revenge.
Basically to find a good comic i go by authors. Find a style that you like then find other works by that author.

One of the best comics ever, in my opinion:
Astonishing X-men, by Joss Whedon.
If you want to check out the x-men, this is a great fun superhero read. You don't need any background really to read it, but if you feel left out use wikipedia.
In my opinion this is as good as superhero comics gets.
Superman Red Son is fun too, but if you ask me it's not really about what it would be like if Superman landed in Russia. When it ends you're like "Oh, it was about this instead."
