New Line doesn't want Jackson? Are they insane?

I'm guessing they can't afford another kick at the can being so expensive considering that people will go and see it even if it sucks.

There's still a lawsuit going on between Jackson and New Line based on an audit from LOTR. New Line claims that their option on the Hobbit is time sensitive and need to go forward or they lose it. Jackson can't go into business with them while the lawsuit is still unsettled. That's how this comes to be.
I too hope the movie doesn't get made without Jackson. It'd be daunting for a director to try and undertake too but I think New Line will move forward regardless. Look at Fox and X3. They moved forward with a less qualified storyteller and made MORE money than either of the first X-Men.

Looks like Uwe Boll might finally get a chance for the big time after all :p
Hobbits are now children, seperated from their parents on the martian landscape, and encounter mystical creatures that get to blow up with their phasers.

Saw and T3 were just like that change directors and the movie flops. Jackson needs to do the Hobbit I just hope leonard nimoy doesn't do the Bilbo Baggins theme song again.

Haha. I agree on ALL counts.
The Hobbit was one of the first books I ever read. We drove to Mexico to visit my family and I read the book laying on my back in the far back of our Subaru on top of our luggage. It was right after my parents divorced and I was so broken up by it that I need a definite escape. My dad gave me the book before I got in the car with my brothers and my mom and I read it on the way down and back. It's one of the best memories of my childhood (one of my first geek moments I think) and I would love to see it done right. It doesn't look good though...

Give it to Tarantino. I'd love to see big battles with jazz music, and the riddle scene between Gollum and Bilbo is gonna get witty, pretty ****ing witty.

Am I the only one who actually LIKES this video? It's so unabashedly, unintentionally cheesy, and that's exactly what is so fun!

JLo nailed it. To do The Hobbit IS time-sensitive and Jackson and New Line can't work together right now. Either the lawsuit is dropped so they can work together or New Line moves ahead with someone else. It's sucks and I wish that Jackson could do it, but what can we do about it but hope for the best.
I still think that there is some possibility that Peter Jackson will do The Hobbit with some movie studio. Mainly because someone has to realize that people will no matter what go out and see the movie. Because people now associate Peter Jackson's name with grand, epic movies.

The Halo movie is much more likely 'cuz it doesn't involve a lawsuit. Just raising funds for an already massively successful brand. My guess is The Hobbit will be directed by someone else. Who would you suggest?
Does Del Toro come to mind?

I think they should get Bruce McDonald to do it, he's part Hobbit anyway.

I can think of any director who would fit. I mean, when they talked about letting Peter Jackson do it people were like "braindead guy?".
I think finding a small time director would be the way to go. DannyT, JLo, I'm looking at you guys.
But mostly DannyT, I don't want the Hobbit to be super action :D

On second thought, I do. I do want a The Hobbit superaction movie.
Why have a riddle scene, when you can have a minigun scene?

Regardless of whether Jackson directs the Hobbit, the movie has to be much tighter and shorter that LOTR. As a book LOTR is long and epic, but the Hobbit is a great adventure, and as a film, it needs a director who can capture that the same was Jackson captured LOTR. Although they are set in the same world they are really quite different books. I think Jackson could do a great Hobbit film, but mostly I just want to see a great film of The Hobbit directed by anyone.
