Well, that was dissapointing. I've seen him interviews though, and he was nowhere near as appealing as the character he plays :(

At first I think he was kidding. He was trying to make people laugh, cause his bit is actually kind of like that. Not calling people the n-word, but just being the way he is, which can be bipolar. I think if the black guy hadn't taken it so personally, it would've gone better, but Michael Richards, dude, that would've been your only chance.

He effed up big time. biiiiiiiig time. This is like the point in movies when some star is having a really hard time, gets into drugs, disregards his family, then has a breakdown on stage like that. We're in the latter half of the second act of Michael Richards' life. Goooooooood luck now. Man. Crazy.

Wow. UHF will never be the same again.

When I was interviewing people in line for the PS3 with Vijay a woman asked me if I was prejudiced because I hadn't interviewed her and her kids yet. We just hadn't gotten to them in line but definitely planned to. She was so accusatory and mean to us that we got in a short argument in front of everyone (that we didn't tape) and ended up interviewing everyone but her. The segment will be on episode 53 and you can literally tell the before arguing and after arguing JLo because it really took it out of me that someone would accuse me of being a racist like that. I was pretty upset by it and when you see the segment you'll see that I interviewed plenty of people of various ethnicities. It wasn't about race and the PS3. It was just about the PS3 and being a geek knows no colors, right? It's a shame I couldn't talk to her kids because I would have loved their perspectives and excitement but not because they were black. Just 'cuz they were geeks like us and obviously not ebaying the systems at 14 years old. They were really excited to play them.

After seeing this obvious racism from Michael Richards I can't see how someone could go after me like that woman did.

Yes, people talking during your set at a comedy show is extremely rude and they should be told to stop or removed. No, you should not berate them based on the color of their skin. That's ridiculous. He's gonna take a huge hit on this one and should.

Unless you're Thundercat. Then it's just the way you were raised and we all love him and will help him along...

Jonathan I know you don't listen to old episodes of geekdrome, but a friend I've introduced to geekdrome is making me listen to old episodes. You my friend are a hypocrite! You hate Australians! First you diss the boomerang shaped PS3 pad that never really happened, then you dissed our man Brian Brown. Which I'm all cool with as Brian Brown isn't that cool down here either. You seem to have something against us Aussies as an ethnic group of people as a whole though.

We're not all bad, we gave you Alex Proyas, he's cool, no? and AC/DC?

Two hands is a good film amd it has Brian Brown in it, even if he is a doush, but Heith Ledger is in it too. And it was shot two suburbs away from my house! The Matrix was shot just down the street, so that's probably has more street cred

Actually I got the vibe that there was an outright comical hate towards our cricket playing arse, but maybe i read too much into those early episodes. My friend pointed it out and I haven't listened to those episodes before, but I have now, and I'm kinda feeling like that poor lady who dragged her son out to the PS3 launch so she can teach him a lesson about eBay I presume.

Ps, beside Kylie Minogue and Olivia Newton John, and maybe vegemite there isn't much more to Australia, unless you like sports with sweaty men.

oh and you guys say "aluminum" funny.

it's funny that there was a feeling that he hated austrailia.

i guess people just assume that other people think about them more than they actually do...like the woman in the ps3 line thinking Jlo is actually going out of his way not to interview her.

i have a friend that is black. i never really think of her as black until she says something about the fact. making comments like "my black ass"..."why do white people really like mayonaise?"..."black" this and "black that". i finally told her...if you worry about people just seeing you as just a "black" woman...don't let that be the only way you describe yourself.

i think samuel l jackson said the way to end rasicm is to stop talking about it so much...i kind of agree with that...the other way is for us all to breed so much we are just one race...that way sounds more fun. i call dibbs on beyonce.

If I'd been in LA, I would have brought a Pav or 10 to the picnic.

that's terrible. i think people in general these days tend to walk on eggshells as Buxomia put it. some people are so used to others trying to be politically correct and "careful" that they get it in their head like they've got the right to accuse people of prejudice. not to mention that such accusations are hardly ever dismissed in this day and age, and the accused have to go through hell to prove otherwise. we see it in the media all the time.

that woman was definitely in the wrong, and it sucks that you might not have enjoyed the rest of the interviews because of her attitude problems. i wish people would just loosen the hell up!

My concern was for YOU guys to enjoy the rest of the interviews and with everyone looking at me after that argument I had to tone back some of my racier jokes and questions and that just sucked. I think it'll still be a pretty funny segment but it would have been better I think if I hadn't been forced to second guess myself.

used to have seperate water fountains, schools, bathrooms, pools, and sections on buses. not being interviewed in a podcast right way does not make you a victim of racsim.

if MLK was there he prolly would have slaped that woman and said "B*tch!? Have you lost your mind? In my day we had to stand in a seperate line!"

but speaking of racism...

In all my experiences in America I never encountered these sensitive people, but when I meet people like this here in Oz i can be pretty sure they don't have guns. You shouldn't let these people bother you JLo. In all my experiences in America I never encountered these sensitive people, but when I meet people like this here in Oz i can be pretty sure they don't have guns. I know things have vchanged since I left Oz (Cronulla last summer for instance), but colour never made a difference ... you weren't African Australian, Irish Australian, Chinese Australian, Lebanese Australian, etc., first and formost you were Australian. Any other racial affiliation was secondary to that. In line with a bunch of geeks - it would have been all about the tech, rather than why aren't you talkin to me and my kids. I've been living in the US for about 9 years now, and the whole politically correct crap just keeps getting worse.

FFS you are all Americans, and I agree with Sam Jackson, racism only matters to those that keep playing the race card - great example that woman was setting her kids. You just know that black woman was slamming the indian guy and the nondescript whitish guy doing the interviews keeping her people down, and not letting her represent on camera.

i don't think any of us here are really racist...i think the humor actually is in the people who carry true racist feelings...like thundercat and michael richards. making fun of the sterotypes themselves isn't the same thing as hating a whole racial group. i know not all black people love fried chicken and water melon...some of them are still eating baby food.

I actually found it quite the opposite. I found highschool to be a stew for racial intolerance. See when I grew up in Hungary you hung out with people who dressed similarly to you as you most likely had a common interest. Since we had school unform in oz you could see this group of recs sticking together. The Asians with asians, The hindu and srilankans and pakistanies tigether. The aussie guys, and the wogs. Although most of the wogs were australian born with ethnic parents. I spoke rubbish english and the Indians were the only ones not to beat me up. I actually put highschool life sucking down to me. Also in the late 80s and 90s Hungary didn't have many races, only whites and gipsies and they didn't go to school.

Also maybe because I live in the city the tolerance is at a super high level to keep the tourist dollar going and whatnot, but I honestly don't know where the Cronulla riots come from. It would have been just a bunch dumb gangs being stupid. Especially as I would imagine beach bound wogs usually hang around Bondi. Still it's weird that when I'm here I find the need to be labeled Hungarian as something doesn't quite fit and I've been here for 13 years now, but in Europe I feel Australian.

Beside a couple of homeless aboriginals claiming my soviet repressed ancestors stole their land, I honestly don't feel real race problems. Then again being a white straight male and a lot of people these days don't pick my eastern block accent (BTW JLo I haven't addressed your wild accusations of eastern europeans throwing tomatoes, we make porn, it's the spanish who throuw tomatoes;) ) I don't get harrased.

Funny thing about America. Apparantly it's all degrading to sit in the back of the bus there (I don't think that stigma still exists, does it?). I always sit in the back of the bus. I feel like I can be sneaky there and eat food while nobody is watching.

There is an interesting bit of research being done at Harvard called the Implicit Association Test. Any fans of American Scientific Frontiers may have seen this project covered by Alan Alda on that show.

What the project aims to uncover is just how much our underlying, subconcious preferences about race and gender affect our day to day lives in ways we may not even realize.

You can actually take part in the actual, ongoing research by visiting https://implicit.harvard.edu/implicit/

To participate you will have to register, and I suggest registering using legitimate, honest answers, so as to actually help advance the research.

The test is fairly simple, yet interesting. And depending on how honest you are with yourself, it may show you some things you didn't realize.

Be prepared to spend about 10 to 15 minutes on it when you can focus and avoid interruptions.

I did the race one and it said I have a moderate preference towards white people. I did get confused when some of the buttons were switched around because I didn't read the text, but I agree with their findings anyways.

Kramer lost it, he fudd up big time but i dont think he's racist. He like most people in this country has a lil bigot inside him. His career is over and thats a shame cause he's funny. The sad thing is this country is so polarized by race that we cant tell when some one is truly racist, a bigot, or just prejudice, There is a difference.

Take Soundwave for example and his use of the black enterprise cover to point out reverse racism. I know the reason he thinks its racist is because it focuses on one race. Doing that made him just like the woman that gave JLO a hard time , But if he knew why the mag existed and what was in it he wouldn't jump to conclusions like that. In all honesty there tends to be more latinos in so called black publications now days.

I'm hungry so I'll finish this later, time for some WHITE Castles.

Does racism still exist? Of course it does. It's just not as openly expressed as in the past. I believe that times have changed, laws have changed, persons have become more educated, less intolerant, less fearful of people who are different from themselves. But since racist feelings lay deep within it will never be completely iradicated.

As overt racism dies down there has been a rebound effect. This has bred what I'll call a type of racial paranoia. I've seen it many times among peers of ethnic backgrounds. When confronted with a person of a different race, they will take ordinary situations and think they are being treated unfairly because of race. I have many times asked people..."are you sure that person was being racist, or just being a prick?" But you guys know all of this. That's what unfortunately happened to Jlo. You should have had me there in the shadows and brought me out as your girlfriend to see the look of shock on her face.

Do I think Richards is racist? No more than any average person, we all have a bit of it in us. The "n" word uttered is hurtful, but the fact that he used it in such desparation and that he was completely unfunny in his attempt makes it almost sad.

I'm hungry so I'll finish this later, time for some WHITE Castles.

ummm..actually pointing out the black enterprises magazine doesn't make me like that woman that confronted jlo at all. he wasn't hosting a podcast segment called "let's see what white people think about the ps3".

that magazine IS down right racist. is it bad racism? that's a different conversation. the fact the underlying premise of the magazine is geared to a specific race...excluding others...is racist.

I don't agree. This magazine is just like any other. It's about a specific group of people, a specific subject -- it's not about black beauty queens, or latina mud wrestlers, or hot rod cars...is a magazine supposed to be all-encompassing based on every subject ever known to man so as to no leave out any race, religion or subject? When you say the word.."racist" that's a bad connotation no matter how you put it. The magazine is subject specific, they all are.

Anytime you allow people to hide behind some avatar, you will find them saying things they would never say to someone, face to face. I miss Dave Chappelle's extraordinary commentary on all racial stereotypes, he was responsible for some great conversations I have had with people of many different races. I think we need a social commentator like Mr. Chappelle to expose the viewpoints of all sides on issues such as Michael Richards ridiculous outburst.

I'm glad Kramer said what he said.

And I'm glad I got a chance to read all these comments about it.
And I'm still gonna watch Seinfeld and laugh at it.
The show was about 4 shallow selfish people who didn't care about anything but themselves living their lives in New York.
There was a message behind that show and that's why they all get locked up in the last episode.
Black people with the word ******/a are starting to act like women with the word *****.
If you act like a nigga/*****, don't get mad if I call you one.
I guarentee you 2 black guys were @ that show saw Kramer get heckled and thought in the back of their minds

And when in the hell did it become inappropriate to heckle comedians anyway? That's how you sharpen your skills in the comedy circuit. that magazine IS down right racist. is it bad racism? that's a different conversation.

Remember, though, that racism is the belief that race is the primary determining factor for certain human traits, and that having those specific traits leads to superiority over other races.

Black Enterprises magazine is not saying that black people possess certain business traits that make black people superior businessmen over white people (or anyone else). Rather, it is a magazine targeted towards a certain demographic who may, arguably, be at a disadvantage in the business world, and therefore need a magazine geared towards their specific needs. Needs which are different from those of a white business owner, or asian, or indian, or what have you.

There is no "good" racism and "bad" racism. Racism is what it is. Racism, and bigotry in general, is a scourge very much alive in our society, and we owe it to those before us, ourselves, and those after us to recognize that fact and do whatever possible we can to eliminate it.

No, but depending on the intent behind it, it could be. Or it could be disinformation, or misinformation. Or even ignorance.

No single race possesses a crime gene. At least not to my knowledge.

Some may look at your "fact" and assume black people are criminals. Some may look at it and lament the socio-political reasons behind those numbers.

It all depends on the context in which a person was informed of that fact.

i am just going to put what point5o said in quotes....

"No, that's just celebrating ethnic pride. There are different standards of beauty in different ethnicities."

Dude...I am totally fine with each race having a beauty pagent. I would just like someone to admit that if there was an Miss White USA there would be an uproar over it. Granted many years ago some white people wouldn't let minorities in things like that....but it is a different world now. Most of those people are dead.

"No, it's not racist. It has to do with trust and sharing a common experience. Do you consider Chinatowns racist? White people have no idea how hard it is for minorities to trust them."

No problem with Chinatowns at all. No problem with Chinese restaurants or places like that either. If going to a minority based business is just about sharing common experiences...maybe said person should branch out of their comfort zone. Start by reading a money magazine that revolves around money and not skin tone.

Minorities have no clue how little white people see them as minorities.

"We hate you too...that wasn't a joke."

Oh no...did you play a joke? Did you put pee pee in my Coke? Come on...seriously...you know it was a joke. Get over it. I can't even tell the difference between Chinese people and Japanese people...how am i supposed to hate them?

"Most people still don't know the definition or have a full understanding of racism is...sad but not suprising."

rac·ism (rā'sĭz'əm) pronunciation
n.

1. The belief that race accounts for differences in human character or ability and that a particular race is superior to others.
2. Discrimination or prejudice based on race.

I f*cking know what it means. Just because it isn't a white person doing it doesn't make it less true. Take the phrase "reverse discrimination". Why isn't is just discrimination? Rasicm goes both ways.

You got that definition from a white dictionary.[/Farakahn] Now, I have do disagree with you on racism going both ways. You need power to take away opportunity keep an entire people stifled. So until other races have significant power in government and economics, only whites can be racist. Just calling someone a cracker is not racist.

That story with the black chick and her kids totally pisses me off. She probably leads such a rich and snobby life that she doesn't even know how to recognize when people are actually being racist. I'll give you a couple examples:

1) Being sent to prison for a crime that a black person committed on the only grounds that you yourself are a black person

2) Being pulled off a bus so that police can determine if you're the right black man that has just committed a crime in the area

Both have happened to the guy that my mom married this past May. The first happened in the 70s on a rape charge, where he was given the option of a guilty plea with 6 months in prison and a felony on his record, or to be proven guilty, where he wouldn't be allowed to see any of the witnesses or know any of their names, and then be given about 14 years in prison with a felony on his record. He took the 6 months, the guilty plea. The second one happened 3 or 4 months ago, a couple thousand miles away from the first one in New York, right here in Washington. People also stare at him and my mom wherever they go together, though it's mainly the older folks.

Now let's compare this to not being the first one interviewed while you're standing in line to buy your kids a PS3.

Totally. I live in Kentucky, and basically all I ever hear are jokes about us being hicks, not wearing shoes, and sleeping with their cousins. While that lost one is true, we really aren't that different from the rest of the country except for a different accent, which pisses me off that people on the east and west coast make fun of since some of the greatest American writers have been from the south (Mark Twain, William Faulkner, Hunter S Thompson, Flannery O'Conner, etc.). So we are obviously just as educated as anyone else.

But frankly, I just ignore any of that regional prejudice seeing as how most people that make those jokes are completely ignorant of what they are talking about.

And apparently Michael Richards is a dick. Did anyone care about him before? Didn't think so.

Dear anyone who doesn't like this thread,

I disagree with you. These types of conversations are not only healthy, but necessary if we are ever to make a world without prejudice a reality. I mean, god forbid we have an intelligent (for the most part) conversationg about what racism means, presenting the different sides of an issue that is not only extremely important to everyone, but also extremely relevant (in the geek world, of course). I've had a great number of geek conversations which evolved into topics such as these. It's a natural event during conversations among intelligent people (which most geeks happen to be). This type of back and forth educates others to different life experiences and different points of view, while at the same time reminding people of a problem that, for many many people around the world, is an ongoing nightmare. I applaud those brave enough to voice their opinions on this very controversial topic, especially when peppered with intelligent arguments and, most importantly, racial humor. I mean, c'mon, it's just funny.

If you don't like this thread, don't read it. If you do like it, continue talking in an open environment (although I'm pretty sure I've just effectively slaughtered this thread).

Lot of love (especially to Australians),

Big Doze - a Halfrican caught in the middle!

PS: Jlo, that sh*t is wack. I know you hate all races equally (especially those lazy Mexicans... or shouldI say Mexican'ts)

I can't take credit for this. I swiped it from another forum I regularly visit.

michael richards should just start an all white magazine and call it "ivory".

Lol I hope you are joking...right (I am not sure as to wether you are or aren't)....being proud of your colour or race is not racism. Be it a magazine supporting black business people or NAACP. What is racist is being called racist names, being beaten or harrassed based on your ethnicity or being stereotyped as a certain image based on your colour.

However, there are certain times when you have to grin and bear it. You can't keep calling racism over everything because sooner or later its gonna lose all meaning.

All in all like chappelle clearly explained in the skit on the lost episodes dvd there are times when you are in the wrong, it ain't racism. You were just acting stupid and it ain't the white man (or any other colour) trying to keep you down.

2) Being pulled off a bus so that police can determine if you're the right black man that has just committed a crime in the area

.

I can definitely relate to that, last week i was pulled over and detained for 2 hours down the street from my studio (it in a wealthy area here in St.Louis). They told me and my friends that we fit the description of 2 people (there was 4 of us) that just robber the gas station near us. The fine officers took us in and as we are about to be booked they get a call that the real guy, yeah 1 guy was caught. I later found out from the gas station that the dude was Mexican. Oh yeah we had to get a cab back to our car they left unlocked.

You know, If I went all white pride on these boards or anywhere else where my aimless ramblings can be viewed or listened to I would be called a racist. You know it ;)

I find it kinda week that minority groups find this need to make these goupds that exclude others, yet they are asking for acceptance, that's a form of hypocracy.

Thats because the "white pride" is often followed by racism (i mean the KKK has lots of "white pride", so does the heritage front for all the canadians out there etc)

And yes these groups (the NAACP) do ask for acceptance...but these groups are not exclusionary because of hate. The reason for these groups is that people can feel they belong to a comunity, know that there are other people with the same ideal, offer support...having people of that don't meet the member criteria kinda defeats that. I mean its like guys marching in the take back the night marches. Yes they do support the cause but, its for WOMEN. Having men there lessens the affect.

Groups like the NAACP are not excluding people, they even have other minorities as members and a few token white folks.hell justin timberlake was at the essence awards. these groups were started because we were excluded from others so we made our own. Now things are a little better, thats why new groups and companies started by us black folks tend to not have race in the title (something people dont seem to notice), but we are not to the place where BET need to change its name. Hopefully that time will come while i still live.
