Ok, so the 3g iPhone is sweet, but it ain't as cheap as it sounds. Father's Day is coming up, and Internet memes are always a good gift, plus we have crazy pop culture musicals and we get to meet a few members of the EPIC FU community!

Ok so give me the skinny on the 3GIphone plans that I have yet to read through Gizmodo/Engadget/Cnet etc. I have a friend like so many that has been waiting for the 3G.
Do you HAVE to have the soon-to-be increase data plan? can you not use the built in WiFi at Hotspots and use third party email such as hotmail, yahoo, google? The cheapest voice plan coupled with the data plan will cost $60 a month for a single user.
Options....options...give me options and thank you in advance.

The price increase for the data plan isn't just a price increase. The old iPhone data plan was EDGE this is 3G. (I've been paying $30 for my BlackJack II 3G for awhile now)
Therefore your paying more for a faster connection, it's not a price hike.

You are paying for it, in more ways than one though: HSDPA coverage is not great, and limited to basically major metro areas with 3g. Without you default back to edge, which sure is fine, but If I pay for 3g it would be nice to use it!

So in the video, it was mentioned that the new iPhone isn't as cheap as it sounds and I'm a little confused by the calculations that were used. She said you were better off buying the original $600 iPhone and paying $20/month then buying the $199 iPhone and $30 a month... anyone else confused?
If I use my grade 2 math here for a sec,
$600+($20 X 12) = $840
$199+($30 X 12)=$559
Now granted, a years service is infact more ($120/year) but the amount you save off the front end more then makes up for it and I get loads of extra features worth more then the price increase. So unless I'm missing something... I would be saving $281, I get all the new features, save $250 by not having to buy a GPS, but I would have been better off buying the $600 iPhone without the features... what am I missing here?????

hey sander, you might want to check out this chart that compares the prices of old vs. new iphones and other phones over a 2-year contract:
