Legendary director Robert Altman (M*A*S*H*, A PRAIRIE HOME COMPANION) died yesterday at the age of 81. Representatives from his production company confirmed the news to the Associated Press. The cause of death wasn't immediately released but Altman had been sick for quite some time, even employing Paul Thomas Anderson to work as a stand-in director on PRAIRIE. Altman was nominated five times for a Best Director Academy Award but never won. He was the recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award earlier this year at the 2006 ceremony. I can't confess to being much of a fan of Altman's work but his influence on modern directors cannot be denied and for that I'm thankful.

M*A*S*H is quite possibly my favorite movie and has played a role in shaping my values and beliefs throughout my life.
It's sad to think we won't be getting more movies like this from him, in the future.

Many of you know that Altman was my favorite director, and hearing about his death broke my heart. He made some of the greatest movies ever (M*A*S*H, McCabe & Mrs. Miller, Nashville) and influenced filmmaking in such a significant way. Hollywood has definitely suffered a great loss.

That is terrible, he was a fantastic director. I loved The Player and Cookie's Fortune to name a couple, I will definitely miss him. Any bets that he wins an Oscar this year for directing A Prairie Home Companion?

Considering he just won an honorary Oscar last year, I doubt it.
This news is really sad to me...I don't normally get worked up over celebrity death, but Altman was a role model to me--a genius. He not only influenced cinema, he changed it. He inspired others (PTA) and revolutionized an improvisational style.
:( Sad news.
