Ok, I have a question about wine tasting.

Why is it that wine is tasted in this manner? Is it possible to taste beer or spirits in a similar manner? Is it worth the time?

(I really don't know, because I don't drink alcohol).

You mean the spit thing? Well i think gary said a few episodes ago that he has a commute back to where he lives from where he taps, so thats why HE spits. It is a custom though associated with wine tasters though isnt it.

I've never seen someone professionally taste beer or Scotch and describe its contents. I've seen wine tasters before (they aren't quite as animated as Gary though :D).

You can pretty much taste anything alcoholic like that. I have seen people taste scotch and tequilla like that as well.

I haven't seen anyone do the slurp, swish and spit with beer though. I suspect the carbonation is too much.

I have seen coffee tasters spit like the wine tasters. Food Network even showed an ice cream taster who spit the ice cream out. Part of it is to prevent consuming too much of what you are tasting and also to keep the taste buds from getting dulled.

I haven't seen beer or spirits tasted in that manner but someone might do it that way.

I thought Gary taped his show at the wine shop.

I've seen a few things tasted in this way before even Vodka and Tea, always wondered why myself though

I went on a tour of a brewery last year and they send someone out to the pubs which stock their beer every now and again to taste test them in this way (to make sure it's the same everywhere)

He tapes it at the WL offices which may or may not be also the shop, I dunno. Either way the office is out in Jersey and he lives in Manhattan

I've go to quite a number of tastings... and while I don't spit it's tough to try more than 4 wines and still retain a palate.

Beer tasting actually requires you to swallow as alot of the taste elements get revealed in the 'after taste'. Wines don't have so much of those elements in the taste.

There are plenty of beer & liquor tastings. In fact, i've seen tastings of maple syrups, chocolates, pretty much anything you can think of can be 'tasted', if it's got a complex enough range of sensations.

oh and eh .. congrats to Gary & rev3 for a promising association !

*cough* Beer Library TV. But, no spitting in beer tasting, it's not allowed. Beer doesn't finish properly if you don't swallow it. This a big reason why beer tasting isn't as popular as wine tasting. In a competition, each judge can only judge two flights before he's disqualified from judging.

I know Gary was looking for a host to start up a Beer Library TV spinoff

I think he needs to find a BJCP certified beer judge with a good on screen manner. Sadly, I opted for a PhD. in Math over Beer Judging certification.

well i know there are two dudes who do a podcast about beer, I think they're in Arkansas or something. They don't quite have the same style as Gary but I like the way they do their stuff & they are knowledgable about it, no doubt.
