What is the deal? NO new star trek tv series in years. and all the others have long faded away. Milk that camel! But don't spread yourself thin with three/four at a time, just concentrate on one, maybe two later, very good ones, like TNG was, and tollbooth 9 started out as before degenerating into soap opera.

Isn't there a new movie coming out sometime in the next year or two?

I disagree. They've overexploited the franchise and I think that they should just let it die while it still has enough dignity left to be fondly remembered. If they try to keep it going, it will just turn into a parody of itself.

Agreed. They need to make more Sci Fi series like BSG and Firefly.

Totally disagree. They have too huge a universe to explore, and like TNG, with great writers and a solid cast, and updated tech, they could totally be great again. There are ALWAYS new concepts to explore, social, scientific, fantasy, etc... Just gotta do it right. And stay on the Enterprise, the Enterprise has ALWAYS been the real star of the show/movies. It's a thematic constant with eternal upgradeability

It's a thematic constant with eternal upgradeability... or downgradability. I used to really enjoy Enterprise :(

I even liked Voyager.

Perhaps the new "ST:Babies" movie will give momentum to have the early adventures of Kirk, Spock, McCoy, and Scottie made into a weekly series.

I want to "re discover" the star trek universe like I did with TNG.

No. There needs to be diversity in the Science Fiction series we watch, otherwise it will become monotonous. The cool thing about Battlestar Galactica is that the characters act as mirrors to our own lives. The cool thing about Star Trek is that the characters act as models of what we could someday be. Then there are shows like Firefly and Dr. Who where comedy intermingles with the drama of Science Fiction.

Star Trek is a classic and since TNG it is very strange to not have a ST series on first run television. Be that as it may, I am loathe to say that a new off shoot of the franchise will probably not be terribly good. I'm a bit dubious of the new Star Trek film for that reason. I hate to get myself worked up over ST coming back, but this whole trying to get the cast to look exactly as the old cast has me worried. Sure, it's nice to see some pretty close resemblances, but if you're starting a series over, you can make the characters look different. I'm also not a big fan of JJ Abrams. I loved LOST the first season and then the second season was just *insert new character here* and *add 10 more mysteries without solving one*.

I'd only want to see it back if a writer comes up with a story which they think would suit the Star Trek franchise more than another franchise or a new IP.

New movie is supposed to reboot the franchise from scratch...even though season 4 of enterprise was great (since manny coto took over and berman stepped back) was too little to late...berman/braga were the reason the franchise started going downhill and they are no longer part(they both finally quit startrek) of it so I say bring back this once proud franchise like jj is doing I welcome my fave sci fi series ever back.

I don't want more BSG..that series I am sorry but it's just not that great..was ok seasons 1-2 but 3 sucked and 4 is up and down and 8 month wait to finish a season? BS screw it don't care..die or find earth whatever.
I know moore worked on TNG and is a great writer but he is dragging it out too much.

Me and one of my friends agreed that DS9 is maybe the best series ever on tv ..if firefly was not cancled and TNG is my fave true trek series and ds9 was just a great show in the trek universe..Voager had good moments and bad but was so inconsistent ..enterprise as said before was only good in the 4th season..too bad as the idea for the show was excellent where they were the first.

Trek has had some time off but now after 40 years with still a strong fanbase wanting more I like the reboot..bring it on jj.

Then after the film lets get a new series new characters and a total new leader for the franchise on TV.

there is NO reason the tv franchise should die. and "enterprise" was a great concept, most probably done mediochrly, but how could I know? It was on a channel I didn't get. Way to dilute your audience, st owners.

Shatner was a host in a documentary about Star Trek. He basically said that people just lost interest. I don't know where I saw it (most likely the Discovery or History channel).

Supposedly, people started to slowly lose interest after TNG, and by the time Enterprise rolled around, people were like "screw it".

I don't believe the "audience fatigue" theory, it was a dilution boredom thing. they streched themselves too thin. One New series with Warp Speed Ten... that's all the fans want. One good show with quality.

There is such a thing as overstaying you welcome and by the time Voyager rolled around, IMO Star Trek had done that. It was just too much too quickly.

Shatner is an old fat moron who can't act and thinks trek died when he left.
He also thought rock monsters would be a great idea for the 5th movie which he directed and is regarded as the worst of all the films by most fans.
He also never accepted his characters death and brought kirk back to life in one of his novels.
Plus he complained kirk didn't have enough lines in generations.

What does Shatner know..pfft.
Besides it was berman/braga many fans were tired of not the franchise as Berman Braga were like eisner to disney.
Go watch season 4 of ENterprise where Manny Coto took over...all the franchise needed was new blood to steer the franchise.
==================================================

And Badger might want to check this.
Produced by Paramount and done by fans, acting is not that great(esp scotty who is just horrid) but overall not bad since the writing is pretty darn good.
Best ep I think is World enough and time with a very special guest star reprising his role in a new way.

Being an avid trek fan, this thread brought me out of hiatus.

I've seen every incarnation of trek. Rabid, if you didn't see the final seasons of DS9, you missed out on great Trek.

Also, Voyager did suck, but it got better near the end. Not great, mind you, but better.

Enterprise for me was destroyed from the get go by the theme song. Trek fans don't want a WB-esque theme song for our shows.

That being said, once you get past the theme song and the first two seasons, you'll see that Season 3 was where Enterprise hit its stride. It became good near the end, and it was a shame that it ended the way it did and soured most trek fans.

As far as a new Trek series goes, I'm all for it - as long as it doesn't deal with young Kirk and crew. No one can be James T. Kirk except Shatner. We need a new Enterprise (in an episode of Enterprise, when Captain Archer was in the future, we got a glimpse of the Enterprise J) in which we can get to know new characters and new storylines. As long as those characters are distinct and likeable (unlike Voyager), and the stories are good, Trek fans will come back. Seriously, who wouldn't want to live in the Trek universe?

haha cool.
I love trek, just don't expect me to wear any ears or costumes.

I stopped going to the conventions as a kid.
I just failed to see a point in paying a bunch of money to bascially see merchandise they sold twice the retail price and autographs I never found interesting.
My bro always got me autographs from his work at CBS over the years even Chuck Norris on a rock from southern Utah and Eddie George from the NFL Tennessee Titans..but I always lost them...even the rock.
Now wish I had kept the rock when the Norris internet thing was popular could have sold it for a good price..oh well.
