Well, if they want to be in the olympics .. ..
Only just started, and if you want in, you have to fill in the gaps. Just a goatee ain't enough.
BTW, this is not a competition, just a thing to do, or in the instance of shaving, not do.

When I was in high school the hair on my head started disappearing and it started growing on my face. At times I have looked like Robert Redford in "Jeremiah Johnson".
Might have to submit a photo.

Is that the movie where he goes and lives in the woods, directed by Sydney Pollack ? The one where he gets an indian wife that doesn't speak english, and she makes him dinner and he spits it out and says "I can't eat this". I remember being appalled for some reason, that he did that, I think it was the actress confusioni on her face and just the crude way he tossed her hard work aside. Another thing that stunned me was that it was pretty damn violent. Good flick though.
And yeh, submit photo now, and again in a week or so, etc...

At that time, things could be violent out in the wild.

Yeh I know, but what I meant was, it was kind of shot violently and graphic. I liked it, but was very surprised that an oldish film had so many cool tricks up it's sleeve for the first (?) really violent scene, as I recall. I'm specifically thinking of the scene when he runs straight at an indian and fights him and kills him. A few moments before he starts running at the guy, all the music drops out, and it's pure silence. You hear the violence building in the silence of the surrounding peacefulness, and then all you hear is the sound of the snow and breathing, and then the sounds of the fight itself. All very real sounding flesh on flesh sound effects. Considering how old it was, I actually found that scene to be more meaningful than the shakey-cam, insert, extreme close-up, over foleyed sound effects, over-choreographed fight scenes of the recent Bourne movie I watched. It was just stripped down beautiful violence.
I've pretty much recollected all I can from that flick, 2 scenes, so, maybe time to see it again.

Post one now Phat. Joe Dirte (btw, love that movie) or not. The point is to see the changes between pics. Take one a week for the next month or more.
I'm busy rebuilding my office/studio right now and will take a pic of my week and a half growth and post later.

Consider yourself fortunate man. I actually have two different colors of hair on my face. The top part (mustache, top of the cheek area, front of the chin) is a light blond, the bottom half (underside of the neck, is a dark brown).
So if I don't shave and get stubble, it looks like I have a weird hormonal imbalance where I can only grow facial hair on the underside of my neck. (blond stubble is harder to see than dark brown).
http://img111.imageshack.us/img111/8975/pict0089eb2.jpg
It looks like a horse-shoe in normal light. But don't let the pic fool you, the blond hair is there, some of it is just difficult to see in the pic.

I see that. Mines not as obvious, some reddish and browns and black mixes on my face. But they all kind of blend. What's weird is, my chesthair is jet black.
I have a friend who has every color under the sun on his face.

I had a beard and I am soon to let it grow back. So in about 3 years I will have a pic to send. When I let my beard grow, I had also started just using clippers to cut my hair. I decided eventually, to just use the same clippers to cut my hair and my beard all at once. All of the hair from my neck up was the same length. It was actually pretty bad ass.

The facial hair I had in highschool was...not impressive. I had it mainly due to not caring to shave much...it'll get there eventually. (It still doesn't seem like it's as full as expected...but maybe that's just ridiculous expectations based on hollywood and fantasy paintings.)

Yeh, at 17 I had long sideburns, but they could be lifted up to reveal half peachfuzz. I don't have a thick beard at all and I've got scars on my chin where the hair doesn't grow, but it's mainly not thick because I barely ever shaved in my life. I used to shave about once or twice a year, but now, more like 4-6 times a year. My dad was shaving twice a day when he was 13,. . . but then again, he also started financially supporting his mom and sister when he was 8. He was alot more man than me. I'm glad I got some of his Italian genes though, not too many, but just enough.

Just keep shaving what you can grow... I couldn't grow much facial hair until I was 21, but I just kept trying to grow out a (pathetic) goatee until I was 20, as soon as I started shaving then I could finally grow it out.

Yeah, I have heard repeated shaving in one area stimulates it into growing hair.
Just wondering out there, what counts as a beard?
Beard as in with goatee and facial hair growing down to the neck and such?
Or
Can a goatee together with moustache be called a beard?

I consider facial hair to have three parts, moustach, sideburns and beard...
I also think the 'shaving makes it grow in better/faster' is just an old wive's tale.

I consider facial hair to have three parts, moustach, sideburns and beard...
But all joined to each other.
I'd be proud if anyone here decided to grow any facial hair at all. I find it ridiculous when Kevin and Alex were discussing growing beards/moustaches, and considering it so hesitantly. If you've never grown a goat, or sideburns or even a soul patch, do it. The reason I started this thread was to encourage dudes to try something different, and for the fun social experiment of observing each others transformations. I liked having short hair, and girls liked me clean shaven, but you can only style short hair one way and one way only, creating only one feeling. Same with a beard, I can embrace it, or hide behind it, I can use it to force people to appreciate me for who I am inside, rather than judging me for my looks... believe it or not, this is actually really common, and I can split a room in two by walking in with a big beard. I consider hair and facial hair to be canvasses with wide palettes to work with.
I also think the 'shaving makes it grow in better/faster' is just an old wive's tale.
Absolutely, positively 100% not true. Shaving makes it thicker and grow quicker. Ask any retired cyclist.

All these links quote an expert saying that while it grows in, it may appear thicker or darker. I don't know why, but, the answer they give doesn't address the question per se. I guess this isn't something doctors can prove one way or the other. I know for a fact that it is true, and it has produced hilarious results on myself and some of my friends, and any well maintained female will tell you it's true. Take any part of your body, especially an area that's never been shaved before, and shave it repeatedly, and once you stop shaving, it will come in thicker and darker (although darker may just be a sideaffect of thicker). I'm talking about once it grows in, back to the length it originally was.
I think these experts are trying to use what they know as experts, and not what they've experienced first-hand. I honestly didn't believe it, or even assume to know why that might happen when told so, but four years of shaving my left knee gave me enough proof.

Oh btw I think it is some what true due to the fact I had one of those weird grow in beards, no hair some places and lots other places. Looked weird. But after a few shaves it all filled in good.
Wait I'm confused, you kept posting all these links to try and disprove it and then you say you think it is true?

nothing wrong with presenting evidence from the other side even if ya don't quite agree.

Agreed. In fact if you know how to do it right it's a good technique in a debate, it shows that you really do know what your talking about...

Well in small meaningless debate about if shaving causes hair to grow thicker, don't really have to do it right. Just post links to say it's not true. :D

Regarding the "shave so it grows back faster, stronger, better" thing, beards.org (best web adress ever) says it's not true, and what makes it seem like it is is the fact that facial hair is stronger and darker at the root, which makes it seem like it's darker and more defined after letting it go for a while when having been clean shaven.
I apologize if this post isn't coherent at all; I'm drunk.
Some fresh pics of me in my non-fitting beard:
