View Full Version : Fake Geeks

Do you all think it's actually the "in thing" to be a geek right now? I see allot of these so called "geeks" as straight fake. I never thought I'd see the day where it would be cool to be a f'n nerd. What really drives me crazy are these video game shows with these hot ass hosts talking about how they love geeks and play video games all day long. Yet they wouldn’t be caught dead with a real geek and dont even know who **** Mario and Luigi are. Dressing like a geek doesn’t make you one. Maybe I’m over reacting because we are no longer in the underground. This same thing happened to Metal.

You knew it was going to be an issue when retro Atari Tshirts started to appear among the emo gear at Hot Topic. Suddenly the stuff that defines who WE as geeks (don't call me a nerd ... I am a geek) are, is coopted by a fical group that need to belong to a "counter culture". I find that extremely sad :( ... in a non-emo type way.

Geek doesn't refer to the person for me. I don't consider myself a geek I just love video games and movies and sometimes prefer playing a session of nintendo versus going out on a weekend.

I don't think its a matter of people trying to be geeks, everyone is a little geeky now. Think of it this way, if somebody was to wear a Mario shirt back when Mario first came out people may think "Geek" or "Nerd". However, a whole generation of kids that were born or grew up around that time played it along with other video games so its not as geeky as wearing one back when it first came out. Its seen as "Dude Mario! I used to play that all the time when I was little".

As for the hosts on TV...

Who cares, they all read teleprompters anyways. Thats what they get paid to do. The same happens with any hobbyist type thing on TV (such as football for example).

I love him but it always makes me wanna kill him when he claims he's a gamer. He came over last week and I annihilated him at mortal kombat. He hadn't even heard of Halo.

I hate you ****ing half-breeds. Not as good as us pure blooded geeks...

In any case, I can't really define geek or nerd, but let me tell you if someone is posing I can generally tell. And just for reference, I'm the VP of a gaming organization at my college (Oklahoma State) and officially we don't play Halo ever, unless we really need money bad. You'd be surprised how many people (mainly Frat guys) that will show up and pay to be in a 4v4 Halo tourny.

I'm not sure which category of geek I would fall into. I'm definitely not as hardcore pure geek as some, as I seem to spread my interests around, and thus don't have time to learn everything of just one thing.

I'm a HUGE Spider-Man fan, my room is pretty covered in Spider-Man and comic related posters and statues, even have one of those bigass cardboard cutouts of Spider-Man in his swinging pose up in the corner. (Has there been a "geekiest thing you own" forum? I remember something like that being mentioned in an old Geekdrome ep.)

Next thing is probably Anime. I watch it a lot. But I also love to watch TV shows like Battlestar, Heroes, Supernatural, and Stargate.

After that, I spend the rest of my time playing my PS2 and GCN. But I have to balance all this stuff with school too. Damn, just never enough hours in the day!

I dunno if I pose as a geek these days over beeing one.

When I was in highschool I barely had any friends, and I stuck in my room and played sonic on my sega all day. I also worked at McDonalds for 4 months purely so I could buy a Japanese playstation on import and have it before any other white kid in highschool. Also when I stopped playing games, because it was an addiction when I was playing them on avarage 80 hours a week, my interest wained towards comics and anime, and to be active I started drawing a lot. That was me as a teen, after my stint in the states as an exchange student for a year I really enjoyed talking to people, going out and also finally got to talk to people of the opposite sex :) and touching them wee :):)

I bought a Dreamcast when it came out and beside a good couple of weeks of Crazy Taxi I got sick of it, so I never went the way of XBOX or PS2, so I would have dropped the ball on that angle of geekdom.

I like comics, but I usually like the collected books of The Boondock, Calvin and Hobbs, Farside, and a slew of french/belgian (or francogelgue, as they call it) comics like Le Petit Spirous, Asterix and Obelix, Spoon and White, Blacksad and the like. Back in the old Image days I was big GEN 13 fan even up to the day of Adam Warren writing it, and anything Jim Lee and J Scott Campbell was involved, but I'm really cold towards marvel and DC, so is that really geeky?

Movies, I watch a lot, but I'll go out of my way to watch French, Spanish or Mexican movies. I also found Lord of the Rings Boring. I like Kevin Smith films though.

You know what? I'm a ****in' poser, I drink Alcohol and I go out ,and I'm sleazy towards people of the opposite sex. I also watch motorsport on TV! :P

RIP Brocky :(

It's actually formula 1, and on the off season I'm kinda digging this new A1 thing. I don't like either NASCAR or V8's. I'll watch the ocasional champ car or Rally, but any type of Oval racing is just boring, I'm having a hard time justyfing normal track racing as it is, let alone driving around in circles for 500 laps.

I don't have anything against the country western stigma of NASCAR and big accidents make good TV, but it's the oval thing that is soooo boring. Also the fad hasn't hit Australia yet, even though we have an Aussie driving in it now. We're all about the Mark Webber here. Who? Exactly.

Back to the future is my favorite trilogy. Is that geeky, or to qualify it has to be star wars or LOTR, or has the above reply disqulified me for any type of geek label.

If it's any better I got involved in following cars after playeing Super Monaco for Sega many many times, and one fo the drivers had a sonic the hedgehog on his helmet :)

Sure, there are whole channels devoted to motor sports, but F1 gets no love :(

I used to really enjoy watching the touring car series at home ... sure its track racing, but its not oval circuits.

Like yourself, I enjoy the car racing games - definately my favourite genre of console gaming. My platform is a modded Xbox - so no good F1 racers ... but PGR2 makes up for it (especially racing around the Rocks area ... makes me home sick listening to the Aussie sound track for those laps).

I heard CBS showes some of the races, other then that you would have to watch speed TV. I know when I lived in the states I was pissed at the US coverage. There's an american driver in it now, but he isn't setting the races on fire yet, and the Indy race of last year didn't help. I only caught some races on ESPn when I was there, but I fin it weird how in America the same sport travels networks. It makes it impossible to follow.

Here's a geek flavour :) did you watch the Monaco races? (They did air it on CBS) the Red Bull teams embrace the geek in me. Last year they went all Star Wars with the pit crew dressed as Storm Troopers and the Lolly Pop man as Darth Vader, and this year the theme was Superman, and David Coulthard got on the podium in a Superman Cape :) I hope they go all Spider man next year, just to see if the pit crew dress up in all Marvel universe.

Didn't they release Grand Prix 4 for XBOX? The official game is heaps behind, but on the PC apparantly they keep upgrading it on a fanbase level with new cars, liveries and even new tracks :)

My brother has an XBOX and It's real creepy to drive past my old work on PGS2. It is soooo acurate. I'm more of a Ridge Racer fan, and almost bought a PSP because of it, but the system is 400 bucks here. I do love my racing games! I used to own Ridge Racer on the PS1. Nobody could beat my records and beat everyone in a linked up arcade game.

1 : a carnival performer often billed as a wild man whose act usually includes biting the head off a live chicken or snake

Yeah, I think you probably beat me out as a bigger Spidey fan, I'm definitely lacking in the Spider-Man underwear category. You certainly don't need lots of money to be a big fan.

When I was a kid my parents would buy me the occational Spider-Man comic, but then time went by and I had sorta lost touch with my comic book friends. It wasn't really until the original Venom titles came out that I really started to take notice of comic books. Of course by then I had missed out on a lot of classic Spidey moments and had to learn the history for myself. But yeah, it's actually Venom that brought me back into comics, so I'm also a HUGE Venom fan. Sadly they've done some weird messed up stuff with him in the past few years and I think Marvel lost that magic that the character originally had.

Remember the amazing issues of Venom hunting Peter down on that island, and he was making the symbiote camouflage him into the trees and in the water? I thought that was soooo f'ing amazing when I was a kid! And of course how it would turn into your street clothes for you. I'm kinda upset they aren't doing that in the movie. It looks like peter keeps seperate clothes overtop of his black costume. :(

I consider myself a music geek as well, but I don't think music geeks get respect from other types of geeks. Based on experience. I think chicks generally dig dudes who are really into music which really isn't the case with comic books and video games. Unfortunately, since I'm into both.

I have also been a Mac geek for the past 12 years and that's another thing that is considered "cool" these days. I don't mind if anything is considered cool as long as I know what I like. Hell, the more people geeking out to the things I like means there are more people I can discuss things with. Now I need to find more people to discuss Stargate with and I'm set.

I thought this would come up. It's good though. I know a 'music geek' might not seem the same as comic books or tech, because it might be looked upon as more artsy. But the thing is, I've got all the makings of a geek. I'm way more into music and tracking its' news than any of my friends. I spend a lot of time at home on the internet--keeping up on release dates, show dates, and actively searching for new music on the net, reading album reviews and artist interviews. Isn't that the same as what tech guys do with PC news and reviews? Or movie enthusiasts? Shit we spend more time discussing and anticipating movie or comic book releases here than actually experiencing the one movie or comic book. That's what i do as well.

And the way I see it, just because I'm going 'outside' to a concert as part of my thing, isn't that the same as going to, say, Comic-Con? Or a tech convention?

The way I see it, I'm definitely not casual about what I'm interested in, and I don't seem to fit in with the people around me who aren't nearly as interested as I am. I still get many blank faces when I try to talk about what I love with my peers, because I spend a lot more time on it and I'm more interested. That's exactly what comic book enthusiasts experience anywhere outside the comic book store or the internet.

I know it might seem I'm trying really hard to call myself a 'geek', which is really strange. But if I'm not that, I'm just a freak. Because I've always been this way, and I love meeting people like me, who seem all too few and far between at times. Tell me that aint a geek!

If I don't start watching more movies and television I'm going to be fake soon.

Please don't take away my geek card.I think it would be more "faded" than "fake" but better to start catching up now...

If I don't start getting to know the sunlight soon I'm going to be able to blind you all with one bat of the eyelash. I never leave my house anymore!Stop kissin' the Wii and go outside. ;)

I have also been a Mac geek for the past 12 years and that's another thing that is considered "cool" these days. I don't mind if anything is considered cool as long as I know what I like. Hell, the more people geeking out to the things I like means there are more people I can discuss things with. Now I need to find more people to discuss Stargate with and I'm set.Amen. heh.

Anime, Manga, Sci-fi (excluding Star Trek..so so with Star Wars), Movie Geek here. Getting back into games now that I've surfaced for a while from my uni books. First person shooter game sorta chick. I don't such games as Warcraft, Starcraft etc...too slow for me and to much effort.

I went for like a 4 year dry spell on Star Gate cause it stopped showing on prime time on Oz!! Later did I realise it was on late night on and off.

Btw...fellow dromettes. Since yourselves are chick geeks, do you get guys flocking to you as a result of your interests?

People would assume since we have geek like interests we'd be trying to escape guys...but I don't find its the case for me...*sniff* I still not yet have found another persn interested in Star Gate and will give me their entire download of all Star Gate seasons (I'm a dodgy asian, I don't buy authentic box sets...I buy fake ones!).

Oh...I got the worse insult from my boy yesterday!!! I'm not good at games unless you give me a few hours and I get the hang of it (but whichever guy around you always think they are better...). I really wanted to buy Scarface (just released in Oz) and he wouldn't let me get it. He said:

"Why do you want it anyway, you don't know how to play those sort of games. And why do you want a PSP so much, you don;t even know how to play games".

WTF?!!!! Arsehole!!! I'd assume, for dudes if they're girl really wants to play a game, he would jump to buy the games for her.

Fake geeks are all the kids that came to the first meeting of computer club "so it'd look good on college applications" and never showed up ever again. But they did pay the $10 fee, so what do I care (I was computer club president).

does that make me uber if i showed up to 2 years of lug meetings and never paid the dues?

What really gets me is the frat boy types that play Madden and Halo, and say "Yeah bro, I'm a gamer." I want to stab them in the brains with a golden zelda cart.

Frat boys have brains? I've been under the impression that they all group together in order to preserve themselves and hide the fact that they are indeed brainless 'tards.

H'mmm. Was I wrong?

I don't know where this idea that being a geek is the "in thing". I see more of the trend with the emo crowd than I see anyone really reading comic books or seeing obscure movies or music. Whatever you want to attributed to geekness.
To be honest I could care less what people call themselves. Placing people into social labels tends (at least in my view) frivolousness, because I know "frat guys" and "sorority's girls" that once you got them out of their social normal settings they're just as lame and as much of a geek as all of us.

You can rant and rave about others, about what they call themselves. I understand the grandstanding of defending a group you belong to...then again you have no control over it so why bother?

Frat-poisoning!

Being a geek is never "in". The geek is "out" by definition. As fashionable people adopt a "geek-chic-mystique", true geeks will move on to something else.

The trouble is that some people are figuring out how sexy having a brain is. After years of watching sex-pots like Brittany Spears and Jessica Simpson be just about as stupid as can be....

I am straight-up 100 mother-FSCKing % geek. I use FSCK (Linux program for those who aren't into computers) instead of ****(is swearing allowed?) I saw a kid wearing an T-shirt with "classically trained" on it and a picture of a NES, so I (being a nerd in a new place) went up to say hello by asking him about NES games, and his answer was "Nah, bro i don't play video games, I learned Latin so I'm classically trained in that sense" So being the nerd that i am asked "Quid facis?" (Latin for whats up lit. "what are you doing") and he responded with "What the hell are you saying?" so i told him Latin, and he walked away. I was sad...

You're right! Let's end this discussion right now! Rev3 shut the forums down! We don't need to discuss anything any further. Take freedom of speech out of the Constitution please. Thanks! Wrap it up folks. Kill the lights. Lock the doors. Don't let the door hit you where the good Lord split ya on the way out!

If you could care less about what people call themselves why post in a thread about what we are calling "fake geeks". Obviously we are talking about labels in here.

I often call myself a geek but my self-esteem is so low I'm not even solid on that.

Geek evidence for me:

1. I watched that 5 hour Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time speed beat in one sitting (although I skipped over some cinematics)
2. I recently camped out for 8 hours for the Nintendo Wii
3. I kick some a$$ in any sort of trivia, except for sports
4. I'm pretty passionate about any form of multimedia
5. Other gaming related things

Geek evidence against me:

1. Never been a huge Star Trek/Stargate/Star Wars/Dr. Who/Battlestar Gallatica fan.
2. 1337ness in any sort of multiplayer game is slim to none.
3. Never seen many badass dude movies (i.e. Kickboxer, Terminator) (I am an only child of a single mother) [Steel Magnolias is the nuts]
4. Got a Mac after they got cool
5. Never been a big fan of MMORPG's

So I consider myself a geek, but I can take constructive criticism.

First post. What what.

Love you dromies.

Let's see saw Casino Royale and The Fountain last week. Was on vacation and did nothing but stay on IRC for hours on end while I neglected my sorely needed housework. Waited in line at Best Buy for an eternity in the cold for the Black Friday sale. Because of that wait I now have in my home a 51-inch HDTV.....I'm getting my geek cred back y'all.

Since we are talking about big tvs...Check ours out....I travel with a data projector for work - but it makes a damn fine DVD projector in hotel rooms, or as I discovered in Boston - airport waiting areas.

The BSG Pegasus episodes looked great projected on the wall in the waiting area. Unfortunately, the sound was being delivered via my laptop speakers, so that wasn't the best ... but it didn't bother the other passengers waiting for word on what would eventually be a cancelled flight. If it had gone on much longer, we would have dropped another guys Ice Age2 DVD in :)
