What exactly is the difference between a Geek and a Nerd? I always seen it as a Nerd being a person that had no friends, wore thick black glasses, suspenders, pocket protectors. I seen a Geek as being a normal person that had nerdy qualities to them but was you average joe. So what is the difference?

If you think your Crazy, your not crazy because Crazy people don't know they are Crazy. Same applies to nerds. A geek is a person who thinks of themself as a nerd. A nerd is someone who doesn't realize he is a nerd such as a Napoleaon Dynamite.

I like to think that a Nerd is someone who likes to put intellectual pursuits above all else. A geek is someone that's just passionate about something unusual, like movies, comics, and video games.

A nerd is someone who pursues knowledge and intelligence regardless of topic, whereas a geek is someone passionate about a specific topic or set of topics, regardless of intellect. ie, sports geek, comic book geek, beer geek.
edit: i missed satansmagichat's post above mine. agreed.

sup,
I think that nerd is a simile of geek, well round here anyway. Most people I know have taken back the words' nerd and geek much the same way as people took back the word 'punk'.

All of you made great points.
To me I think of a Geek as someone you want to know because he can help you out with certain things.
A Nerd is someone you don't want to know because if he helps you, he's will tail you for the rest of your life.:(

I've always thought of nerds as being really freakishly intelligent about things most people don't really care about, perhaps they have one or two equally intelligent friends but other than this they just read and study or have one or two other interests. These people are usually completely unaware of how to be in most social situations.
Geeks, on the other hand, can be just as smart or they can be average in that area, most would probably do better in their studies if they applied themselves to such things instead up using up brain space remembering comic book stats and all the secret codes for special video game modes. Geeks tend to stick to eachother, not exactly for lack of social awareness, but more because they like to be around other people with their interests and passion for said interests. This sticking together is what leads people (including themselves) to believe they aren't very good at interacting with others, but they probably would do just fine if they tried (like most other things) Then there are Band Geeks, that's a whole other culture in itself :)

ive always believed a geek to be someone who was very passionate/interested about specific things... and they knew that they were.

I like Satansmagichat and Kowgod's definitions. Therefore this will be canon from this point on.
All agree say,"Aye!"
All oppose will be shot out of a cannon.
(I suppose I'm a geek because I spent several hours downloading the 6 part Zelda timeline and youtubing for Silk Screening videos)

I'm not sure if I agree with both, but I find that a geek was once used to describe a sideshow attraction to be very funny.

yeah, they said that in an Xfiles ep about carny folk. Hardly a modern day explanation though.
I think we should add SatansMagicHat's definition to the dictionary.

It's so true. I could be a ****in genius at anything if I didn't waste time on movies, comics, video games, tv shows, and music. I actually prefer to think of myself as a "Pop Culture Junkie". And if I see this term anywhere else, I would like credit for it in the form of sexual favors.
