View Full Version : SAG Strike Effect TRS?

Will the potential SAG (Screen Actors Guild) strike effect the tapings of TRS? I would assume that at least 2 of the stars (Alex and Jeff) would be members of the guild.
Any update from the boys on this would be great....

Jeff chatted a little about this at the NYC meetup saying they would likely have to stop doing TRS during a strike since SAG could go after both Jeff and Alex as union members. I hope that SAG avoids a strike, not just for my admittedly selfish TRS-related reasons, but also for the good of all those working in the entertainment industry, especially the ones who got hit so hard during the WGA strike.

PS- Of course, it could become the "Totally Steve and Dan Show" which might be interesting :)

Sounds quite interesting, especially if either Danny did impersonations of the other two or if Steve went on camera.
Also, a SAG strike would probably make me kill myself.

This would suck, but I doubt that any SAG strike would last more then a month since without actors you can't make movies, period, atleast with writers studios usually have a large pile of scripts sitting in some back room.

It would be completely ridiculous, since the main issue that both unions have complained about is proper compensation for online content. That's 100% of what Revision3 does. The SAG should be using this network as an example of how actors can be properly rewarded.
Also, the writers strike didn't stop anybody making shorts for Funny or Die, My Damn Channel etc...
IMO if they do strike, they should give exempt status to any production company that properly compensates it's employees for online content.

If it's a problem, Rev3 could always pull a Letterman and strike a separate deal with SAG to let Alex and Jeff continue or prove that they are already being compensated for their online content.

Except that Revision3 does not produce TRS; the guys' own company, Team Awesome LLC, does. This means that Jeff and Alex would be negotiating with their union on behalf of themselves, and I don't even want to think how complicated that would get. (Maybe they should ask Mel Gibson or Tom Cruise how they handle being an actor with a stake in a production company. Well, maybe not those guys...)
It would suck to not get TRS, but I would hope that they would honor the strike either by going on hiatus or pulling a Letterman.

I also prefer it not go down like that, but .....
I am all for continuing the show in the interim (if the worst case goes forward). Dan can still rock the movie segments, maybe pull in an iFanboy or two for a comics section, maybe Garnett from 1Up to rock a games segment. I'm sure they could pull in enough friends to keep things going if they needed to.

I tremble at the thought that this could ever happen. I'm not sure I could make it if TRS was gone for a while...some weeks it is honestly the only thing that gets me through. Someone hold me.

Remember how during the strike all of the talk shows went on with out writers? I think TRS should live on with no actors. Just a weekly comic depicting what the show would have been.
But seriously, it seems silly that it would affect TRS which is doing the kind of thing SAG should be working towards (assuming everyone is being fairly compensated?), but really I just hope that it doesn't come to a strike. Actors hold more clout than writers, and if the writers won I'm going to assume that negotiations with actors will go a lot quicker.

So...actors wouldn't be allowed on screen, even if hey weren't acting but merely talking?

Not that I'd want Alex or Jeff to chance jeopardizing their careers but it seems like TRS would be something they could do. I mean as far as I know Revision3 is not affliated with any studio. Letterman got his writing staff back as he paid them out of pocket. Jon Stewart was back on the air so long as he didn't 'write' material. I mean TRS is kind of a news/editorial program, it even says so right in the intro TRS is "the latest news and reviews". At most I would think they would have to stop doing the intros for each show. But again I'm no actor.

I wonder if they could work a loophole by saying that they're appearing on the show in their function as producers not performers. Essentially, filling in for themselves.

They should just bring in puppets to replace them during the strike. Or have two special guests try to do the show with Dan. :)

Yea..... although i wonder if Jonothan is gonna be totally hurt by this strike. I have some friends in the industry, and I just know it's gonna be hard.

Incidentally, you meant 'affect TRS', not 'effect'.
'Effect' is usually a noun - i.e. it had the effect of burning him
'Affect' is usually a verb - i.e. the girl's actions affected him
That being said:
'Effect' can be a verb - i.e. you can effect change in something
'Affect' can be a noun - i.e. he was picked for his lively affect (in the sense of feeling or emotion manifested through body language)
The more you know!

Wow, I didn't even realize the strike would affect podcasters. It just didn't connect for me. It makes sense now that I think about it, though.
I'd hate for the show to be off for any amount of time but Jeff and Alex have to do what they have to do. It's not like we all wouldn't be right here waiting when everything was settled.

It was not a derisive comment. I see no harm in pointing out, for educational purposes, a mistake that can be easily learnt from in the future.

Wow, I didn't even realize the strike would affect podcasters. Most of them it wouldn't the srike is for SAG members ... and technically this is work for them.
I wonder if it would cause problems at LA area Starbucks with the barristas (sorry ... "I am an actor, currently between roles ... perhaps you saw me as number 3 fan in the crowd scene of th American Idol promotional video") going on strike as well.
(No offense intended Alex and Jeff)

*snOOOooOOre* Wha? Oh, sorry, I feel alseep during your talking ;)
Nah, just kidding. I always mix up affect and effect as well. My 9th grade english teacher had no idea about the correct uses back in the day when I asked here either.

The idea of The Totally Rad Show with Dan as the sole host is intriguing to me. I think they should try it for one episode. I really just wanna see Dan talking about all three sponsors, answering three different e-mails, punching his own fists together to explode... The possibilities are endless!

Bahaha, punching his own fists together, that's awesome.
He could do a Stephen Colbert's Formidable Opponent and speak all the parts of the discussion.

just a thought. I'm not an expert, but i think they can get around the SAG strike and still do trs as long as they're not acting in the show, which means all they have to do is cut out the intros and they can be kosher. The bulk of TRS is just them giving their opinions on different subjects, which is not any way acting, it's just them being themselves. If the late night and reality TV shows got around the WGA strike by not scripting their shows, then the TRS guys should be able to get around the SAG strike by not acting in TRS. What do you guys think?

We're talking SAG here though...I'm pretty sure they're a bit more greedy, in that there are strict limitations as to what you can do, etc. Hell, some of the jobs you need a SAG card, if I recall correctly, don't really include acting or such.
I might be wrong, it is hearsay from a bad memory.

This is my impression, too. Since "acting" is clearly subjective (after all, you can "act" like yourself), I believe SAG's focus relates to being paid for a performance, whatever the form may be. And since the main contention in Hollywood these days is over adequate compensation for new distribution methods like the internet, SAG may be even more sensitive to a show on the web being done by members crossing a picket line. (Well, a figurative picket line. How weird would it be, though, if a line actually formed at the bottom of Steve's driveway?)

Or, SAG could be completely oblivious to whats going on in the new media space.
